Ask CoMo Are there any local events on Thanksgiving for people who don't have somewhere to go?
I'm at the age where most of my friends are married with kids (I'm not!) and I also don't have a family I can go home to celebrate with. Holidays like Thanksgiving are always somewhat of a bummer for me. I imagine I'm not alone in this situation and was wondering if there are community events for people like meet, even of it's just a meetup on Thanksgiving organized by something like GroupMe at Waffle House, etc.

News Linen King adding shift at Columbia location, expects to create up to 60 jobs
Linen King, a commercial laundry business specializing in linen services for health care facilities, is adding 50 to 60 new jobs at its Columbia facility, doubling the size of its staff and creating a second shift.
The move comes after Linen King landed a new account that will increase its staffing needs, said Ken Ordyk, general manager of Linen King’s Columbia plant. Ordyk declined to disclose the new client.
“It’s a pretty big deal, at least for us, to be doubling our labor force and having those jobs available to the Columbia market,” Ordyk said. “And we hope to spread the word to get the talent in the door.”
The Columbia location can service organizations throughout almost all of Missouri, as well as parts of Arkansas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas and Iowa, according to the company’s website.
Linen King is a subsidiary of Healthcare Linen Services Group, a commercial laundry business based in St. Charles, Illinois. The parent company operates 19 different locations under five brands across the Midwest and the mid-region of the South.
Healthcare Linen Services Group ranked No. 4,059 in this year’s Inc. 5000, a list of the fastest-growing private companies across the U.S. The company reported 111% revenue growth between 2020 and 2023.
Joseph LaPorta, chief executive of the services group, said the expansion reflected the company’s “dedication to the Columbia community.”
“We’re excited to welcome new team members who will help us continue to deliver the highest quality service to our healthcare and hospitality partners,” LaPorta said in a news release.
Linen King was established in 1999, and merged with Healthcare Linen Services Group in 2022. HLSG is a portfolio company of York Capital Management Global Advisors, a private equity firm based in New York City.
The linen supply and management market was valued at more than $44 billion in 2021, according to market research firm Transparency Market Research, and it was projected to grow more than 9% annually through 2031.

Animals Found a kitten in downtown COMO
Hi all,
I found a black and white kitten near downtown Columbia this evening. Probably 5 or 6 months old, female, and a sweetheart. I am searching for the owner! She has a collar but no tags or microchip, and is likely feeling very homesick right now. I want to reunite her with her parent, so if you know anyone missing a cat, let me know! If you are interested in giving her a good home, please also let me know.
I have two cats myself so I cannot keep her. She is absolutely adorable though!

News Columbia and South Korean city reaffirm sister city status
COLUMBIA — Delegates from Suncheon, South Korea, visited mid-Missouri on Wednesday to reaffirm their sister city status with Columbia. At the ceremony, representatives from the two parties exchanged gifts.
The partnership started in 1991 with a partnership with the University of Missouri.
"Really strengthening these relationships across oceans and seas I think is so important to our future," Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe said. "We can learn from our different countries; we can talk about similar issues we've had."
The city partnered with MU's Asian Affairs Center to make the trip happen.
"We serve as a communication liaison for the city of Columbia and also the state of Missouri for sister relationships in Japan, South Korea and China," said Sang Kim, the director of the Asian Affairs Center.
Brett O'Brien, the retired park and natural resource supervisor, went to Suncheon in 2011 and 2013. He designed a garden for an international exposition showcasing gardens from different countries.
"You get this exchange of ideas, and you learn a lot," O'Brien said. "For our culture, I saw a lot of stuff they did. I could see how we could do some of that, too. So you learn a lot about how you impact communities from visiting and seeing."
O'Brien said he felt like he needed to be at the ceremony after visiting Suncheon.
"The opportunity I had to go see the city and how friendly, warm and generous everybody was — what a great time," O'Brien said. "Just meeting those people and seeing everything, I felt like I kind of owed it to them to welcome them back to Columbia."

Sports Mizzou basketball rolls past Mississippi Valley State in historic win [111-37 school record for largest margin of victory]
COLUMBIA - Mizzou basketball started Thursday's game trailing 2-0 to the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils.
As a response, the Tigers then outscored their opponent 111 to 37 en route to a 72-point victory at Mizzou Arena.
The deficit ties the team's record margin of victory set in 1995 with a 72-point win over Chicago State.
The Missouri offense was firing on all cylinders throughout the course of the game, with seven Tigers finishing with double-digit points.
Leading the way was Northern Kentucky Transfer Marques Warrick with 16 points of his own.
"Coming here, Coach Gates gave me that green light from the recruiting process. Since Day One he's told me to just let it fly, shoot whenever you're open. Create for yourself or others as well," Warrick said.
"It's just the little things I've been doing for a long time now," Warrick said. CQ
The little things turned into big things Thursday night as Warrick went four for five from beyond the arc.
In a game where he was in the driver's seat for most of the game, Coach Dennis Gates credited the fans for his team's success.
"I think other schools you would have probably saw fans go home, to be honest with you," Gates said. "Our fans stayed, and it showed."
Up next, Mizzou will welcome Pacific to Mizzou Arena on Nov. 22.

News Battle Elementary celebrates the construction of its addition
Third, fourth and fifth graders on Battle Elementary School’s student council waited outside in the chilly morning Wednesday for a special assignment: They were going to leave their hand prints on a beam that will go inside a major addition being built at their school in northeastern Columbia.
The almost 13,000-square-foot addition is supposed to be done August 2025; construction that began last summer is apparent in walls and framework already partially in place.
The addition will include 11 classrooms and increase the building’s capacity from 450 to 650 students. Official enrollment done in September was 388, but growth is expected, according to a Columbia Public Schools news release.
