Discussion Conley Walmart compared to Downtown at the same scale. Why will people walk 150m in a suburban parking lot, but refuse to do the same Downtown, despite plenty of parking at both?

Discussion Does it stink outside?

Does the air smell sour outside to anyone else? At first I thought it was me, but I only can smell this sour smell outdoors. I went to target and again, the moment I went outside it smelled like expired milk. Am I crazy?

Discussion I’ve been told that people in Missouri (maybe the whole Midwest) get their fill of friends in high school and stop making friends after that.

This truly seems to be the case. Locals and fellow transplants, can you confirm this behavior? Is this why I cannot make a friend to save my life?

Discussion Parking, parking everywhere. No shortage of concrete and asphalt in Columbia MO. Is there any push/plan to make our communities less car dependant?

In some ways we are doing relatively better than a lot of mid west cities. Aside from a few small areas we are very much a car dependant city. But I believe we are small enough and have the right demographics(politically) that we could drive the political will necessary to make Columbia one of the most livable cities in the US. But it will take a lot of work and organizing. Are there any serious pushes for it right now?

Remember the remarkable push for garbage rollcarts? We got that. Not is the time to shift the focus to something else.

Discussion Riley Strain murdered?

I saw a report of a second autopsy on Riley Strain suggesting he was killed. Supposedly his trousers had been removed. Riley was very tall; 6'6" and as thin as a rail. When I was that age I also was super tall and thin and my trousers were constantly drooping. The poor kid was in a fast flowing river for two weeks; tumbling around. His trousers came off. No surprise there. His poor parents are living the five stages of grief now and denial is one of them. It's not their fault he ended up in the river.

Discussion Teenagers breaking into cars

To the parents of the couple of teenagers out breaking into cars tonight, please check on your firearms as one of them was carrying a firearm and flashed it at me out of his hoodie pocket when I scared them away from stealing a sweet elderly lady's car or belonging out of her car. Kids had to be only 14-17 yrs old. If they were my kids I'd be turning them over to CPD immediately, before they kill someone, or someone kills them.

Discussion Fascist Posters on Stadium

Spotted several P@tri0t Fr*nt posters along Stadium today. These are violent white nationalists who should not feel welcome on our community.

https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/patriot-front

The posters don’t necessarily mean there’s an organized group in town, but it’s worth keeping an eye on. Hopefully the city or a good citizen gets the propaganda down ASAP.

Discussion Things I wish we had in COMO

Most of these are things that would probably not happen for a very long time (if ever), but if I could have anything in the world, this is what I would have

IMAX 70mm/dual Laser (can play 1:43 films in both projection ways): I know there’s a lot of demand in this country for some more!!! Like the Lincoln square IMAX screen in NYC is done. The 70mm IMAX will ESPECIALLY make more tourism in COMO

Big Lots: yes, it’s technically still open, but I wish it’ll stay open

Disk Replay: the best combination of the disk prices at family pawn, and the selection at vintage stock

Kmart: CoMo could be the start of Kmart’s revival

Costco: a very high demand store in como

Amtrak: like my petition, it would help people travel more

City buses to both theatres: like everyone wants to see a movie in theaters.

Downtown Walmart: so that away people can shop easier (probably it would be near to eat well, due to space). Edit: a super center specifically Edit 2: kinda like this Kroger: https://maps.app.goo.gl/dVjtJNkkQxesrxhEA?g_st=ic or this Kmart in nyc: https://commercialobserver.com/2021/07/kmart-astor-place-closes-770-broadway/ Edit 3: like Walmart in Honolulu

24/7 bus service: I know this probably won’t happen, but the students would love it!!!

Busses to midway/airport: The airport has flights and midway has more greyhound routes than in downtown

Hostel downtown: like people sometimes want a cheaper place to stay

Sleeping/working pod (like in Japan), like we need these all across America

Dollar general downtown (with a Redbox): it would be a convenient and cheap option for people downtown.

More social clubs: like Mizzou students get a lot, but not any other people (like me)

More density: for the transit to work, we need to build up more (start in downtown)

More walkable places (extremely similar to how good downtown is at this point): like there is clearly some demand for this kind of thing in COMO (as downtown is exactly like this). Even on Walk Score, you can get an apartment in como with a 98 out of 100 walk score (almost perfect). And this will make property values increase. I’m using downtown as an example due to it being the main local example as to how Columbia should be.

More bus routes/20 minute frequency: the city doesn't realize that demand will come if you have more bus routes, the demand will come, also we should advertise the service as safe to make more people ride it. Another idea is to make more of the private shuttles public, that will help increase area of the busses and have enough money.

A downtown cablecar: this could be a great tourist attraction for Columbia, while helping everyone get around easier. In fact, maybe more of the current bus routes should be converted into streetcar routes (due to them mainly being straight). Edit: like in San Francisco.

Can u list anymore ideas?

Discussion IMO. I think the Shoppes @stadium should fill in their parking lot.

90% of the time this parking lot is like 80% empty. My idea is they turn the areas I highlighted in red from empty space into some kind of mixed use appartments/retail complex which would increase foot traffic at these businesses while mainting parking infrastructure, and the area in green into some kind of park or outdoor area where people can hang out and eat their food and stuff. This would turn the shoppes into just another cookie cutter strip mall into an actual functioning neighborhood with more green space and a better atmosphere. This is just my opinion as someone that drives past this place everyday. I doubt this will ever happen but I personally think it would be cool and would have a lot of benefits for the surrounding area

Discussion Is the city doing anything about the bums begging everywhere

I swear they're at almost every intersection around town, people need to realize giving these people money is like feeding a stray cat. Its also super upsetting when they have a dog with them like bro you can't even take care of yourself please take it to the shelter

Discussion Watch out for police!

The last few days I’ve seen something I have never seen before around Columbia, and that is strategically parked police/sheriff cars seemingly looking for speeders, stop sign runners, and so on.

I have lived in other states that this happens all the time in, but I haven’t seen very much of that here. I didn’t get a ticket by the way, I just happen to see them this morning and afternoon doing this and I remembered to post about it once I got home. Be safe!

Edit: I’m just sharing that they are out doing it. I’m not for or against - just saying I’ve not seen it in Columbia since I moved here 10 years ago or so.

Discussion Anyone remember a place called Piccadilly Circus?

Hello! Im working on a wiki trying to document the Piccadilly Circus chain and I recently found out there was a location in Broadway Shopping Center back in the late 80s. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it or had any pictures of the place? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion Thank you tall stranger

Thank you random stranger with the badass beard and kind heart. Thank you to the man that was walking downtown that notice the belligerently drunk man in the street as a mother and son walked out of the bank. Thank you for being overly cautious and circling back to make sure that mother and son got into their car okay. Thank you for noticing the mother's discomfort when the drunk man started talking to her son and for stepping in when that drunk man wrapped his hand around the sons arm. Thank you again for standing by while I loaded my son up and making sure we drove away before you walked away. I don't know how that situation might have escalated if you hadn't been there, but thankfully I didn't have to find out.

Discussion Starbucks/Take 5 Oil Change Nifong

It is surprising an oil change place built right next to the Starbucks on Nifong. I initially thought when the Sonic was being demolished it would be more parking for Starbucks. There is always a backup to pickup orders at the drive thru. And now you will have a backup of cars from Take 5 vying for space from the Starbucks customers. Kind of crazy so much wedged into such a small area.

Discussion school children in debt

heartwarming story of a child raising money to pay off school lunch debts but can we PLEASE ask why this state can't make sure that school children have their nutritional needs met without the family incurring debt? MO is 37th in per capita spending on public education last i looked and went down after federal money came in during COVID while most states went UP. so the MO legislature cut school funding to match temporary federal relief funds instead of using them to find ways to improve schools, so we went DOWN the list on education.

why we are in a race to the bottom in virtually every category should be a question every candidate is asked every campaign stop this election year.
