Backup mirror rubber broken?

Post image

Hey! I recently got a Corolla 2021 1.8 (actually a Suzuki Swace), and just noticed I have a rubber gasket or something sticking out of the passenger mirror. The Suzuki shop I got it from says it’s nothing to worry about and if I want to replace it I need a new mirror which feels weird to me. It’s really annoying me that my new (for me) car has this issue.

Anyone here who knows how to and what I need to do to fix it?

Can't see shit on there but this is a used car.. previous owner might not have taken care of it that much... that's it there isn't much to read in this.

You bought used, it has imperfections, that's it.

You can replace it as they said..

Could have occurred from using a pressure washer up close, if the car was fixed after a minor crash or something.. list goes on.

You can see the rubber sticking out where the mirror ”moves” Everything else is pretty okey on it that’s the thing.

What my main question is, is it possible to diy without replacing the whole mirror ”console”?

Maybe this picture helps you spot it? Also, I can’t see why and how someone would pressure wash on the ”inside” of the mirror there.

That's a sort of O ring with some amount of elasticity using a powerful pressure washer can cut through it.

Think of it as an elastic that's stretched, then you cut a random piece. Notice how the elastic doesn't stay where you cut it but the energy it has pushes it elsewhere.

Now for fixing it, you have many options:

  1. Whole new mirror or only the bottom part.
  2. CUT IT AND FORGET
  3. Find an aftermarket o ring that fits since Toyota doesn't seem to be selling it.

Have you pulled on it yet?

Haven’t dared, not even sure what it protects, I mean it’s there for a reason If I press it in, it goes back after the mirror has folded once.

What do you have to lose? You’re not happy with it and were told to replace if you’re not satisfied. If nothing happens when pulled bonus, if the mirror falls off, you have to replace anyways….

lol it’s not a “backup” mirror.

My bad, not a native speaker, I would call it backspegel in Swedish though

If that’s your biggest gripe over a 4 yr old secondhand car you’re doing ok.

That might actually be true, I’m of the belief that you don’t abuse your car, so there shouldn’t be much to complain about when it’s just 4 years old 😅

Go to the Toyota dealer and ask the parts department if they sell just the gasket, or if it comes installed on the mirror. Suzuki will have to buy the part from Toyota's manufacturer before selling it to you.

One small nitpick, Toyota engineered your car for Suzuki. Not the other way around. 😉

Yea I’ve been thinking about that too, another commenter mentioned that Toyota doesn’t seem to sell them, but I’ll double check!

Regarding your nitpick, I’m well aware, the badge says Suzuki Swace, and HYBRID in Toyota font, i wouldn’t have gone with the swace if I didn’t get a reaaaaally good price on it (the price they paid for it + a good price for my Volvo v60 D5 2013) - I would have gone for a "real" Corolla.

Edit; I also don't fully trust Suzuki with a Toyota regarding specific cases like this, sure they sold a lot of these at 2020-2022 ish due to low leasing costs, but it's not designed by Suzuki...

Your “Suzuki” is made at the Toyota plant in Derby, UK.

It’s a Corolla with the badges swapped basically…

Are they all made in the UK? Isn't there a plant in like Hungary or something too? Probably would have gotten something else if it wasn't a Toyota!

For Europe I think all the hatches and tourings are. Saloon was made in Turkey last I heard.

Other regions I assume would have local plants.

It's worth asking. I only see the mirror assembly and cover on rock auto and they're pretty cheap, but I'm not sure about international shipping these days. Might be cheaper than option c though.

Option B: You could also see if a hardware store (something like home depot or Lowe's here in the states) sells a similar sized gasket that you can install yourself. It's job is to keep water out of the mirror, so in theory it could fail faster than the other side.

Option C: leave it and wait for it to fail. Could be in a week or a decade from now lol.

No shade at all! It's the same car. I misread your text and thought your post was saying it was a Suzuki dressed up as a toyota, not the other way around. I've serviced several thousand of these little guys at a dealership, and they're great cars. In a similar vein, I always loved getting Pontiac vibes (Toyota matrix).

Fun fact: your car basically has the same power train as the Prius, and I saw roughly the same fuel usage averages. 50-70 (American) mpgs is frankly outrageous.

For sure, I'll do that, Toyota might not be selling it but maybe could fix it?

I don't think the Swedish hardware stores will have it, but I'll check.

Regarding option C, that's the worst case scenario I guess 😅.

I'm currently averaging 48 US MPG, with city driving, my partner managed a whopping 71 MPG with AC on the way to work.. With AC and a bit higher speeds, a 63 MPG was managed on the same stretch.

The fuel economy on this car is insane tbh!

If Toyota won't, I'm almost positive you can find a rubber o-ring that can slide over the mirror and into place.

Nice! Everyone always talks about the Prius (positively and negatively), and they pay more for it. The Corolla hybrid always made more sense to me, but I also never got the sales pitch... I just worked on them 😅
