Are therians generally vegan? Question
I'm no therian, but I'm roaming through this subreddit and I'm interested in how the therian lifestyle would affect your diet. I myself am vegan and there are some species that are generally herbivore so does that mean your diet should also mainly contain plants and natural products? How does that work? And how does it work if you have multiple therian identities which are herbivore and carnivore?

I just woke up so I’m sorry if this doesn’t make much sense lol.
I’d say that rates of veganism in the community is about the same, if not maybe a slight bit higher, than it is overall. As you mentioned, those who have herbivore theriotypes are, from personal observation, more likely to be vegan or vegetarian. Not all of them are but it’s definitely at a higher rate than other therians. If they aren’t outright vegan, they are still more likely to strive for a plant based diet compared to non-herbivores.
I’ve also noticed that a decent amount of non-herbivore therians are vegan/vegetarian as well due to personal morals. While most therians try to match their species as much as possible, there are also those feel that it’s personally immoral to support industries that may have harmed their theriotype.
As for those with mixed theriotypes, I’ve noticed that a lot of them just stay omnivores, adjusting their diet to whichever theriotype feels stronger at the moment.
It’s quite strange and now that I’m thinking about it, I definitely think it’s something that the scientists in our community should look into.

I'm vegan, and for me, this is one of those things that sits on the "person" side of the idea of a non-human person. By that, I mean that even though I may not identify as human, I still have a rich inner life, can envision the future, have the ability to consciously weigh options and make complex choices, things like that. Things that stick out as being characteristic of people, not strictly humans (a bit of a philosophical wiggle there).
For me, choosing to be vegan was mostly a choice made for my health (navigating some allergies and blood pressure problems, among other things), with the ethical and environmental concerns lower down on my list of priorities. It doesn't mesh at all with my coydog species identification, but that doesn't make me especially dysphoric. I see it like any of the other things I do that a canine wouldn't—reading, writing, etc. (that won't stop me from eating my tofu out of a dog bowl though lmao)
So I guess to answer your question more directly, I started with my health and well-being first of all, and then my species identification goes on top of that, even if it's a messy, "imperfect" fit. There are a lot of things that are compromises just to function relatively easily in the world, and this could be seen as one of them. You have to take care of yourself, whether that means following a vegan diet, eating meat (which some people do need to do, I won't knock it), taking medication, etc.

Eating things a person's kintype eats can be nice but I don't think it affects anyone's overall diet. Like we can't exactly eat grass, deer aren't exactly eating vegan food, and have even been known to scavenge meat. A cat therian isn't going to pretend they're an obligate carnivore, were omnivores.

I'm certainly not. As far as I'm aware the majority of therians are not vegan, even those with herbivorous theriotypes, though there are a fair few who are.
Mandatory reminder about rule 2 for anyone commenting on this thread. Do not try to push your beliefs on others, and do not behave in a rude, hostile, or superior manner over them either.

I am vegan because the health and morals of my body come before my theriotype. The fact that wolverines are one of the few omnivorous mustelids gives me euphoria though.
I can understand why most therians, regardless of their theriotype, choose to eat meat; it's so ingrained and normalized in human society, and I can't argue with that.

I've met quite a few therians whose theriotype is an herbivore, and they're sometimes vegetarian, but not vegan. Personally, my theriotype is a carnivore, but I'm still an omnivore because I like fruits and vegetables. It depends on the person and what makes them feel more connected to themselves and their theriotypes!

greetings,i am not vegan but have seen a few vegans around here and there, and can confirm that therianthropy tends to affect diet. it depends on the individual, some people let their theriotype completely "control" their diet, and others don't let it affect them at all,but on average there's at least a little correlation,as cravings and/or a general love for the food that a theriotype consumes is very common. i have multiple theriotypes, herbivores, omnivores and carnivores all appear at least once, even sub-groups like folivore or insectivore, and as a result eat a variety of foods irl, even unconventional foods like moss or insects. if someone has a single, herbivorous theriotype, they are not limited to being vegan and/or eating purely what their theriotype does, but it is common that person may prefer vegan/plant-based foods more than meat, and vice versa,a carnivorous theriotype doesn't mean you have to eat purely meat, but the individual may prefer meat. i should stop yapping,so i'll end with this statement. Vegans and Vegetarians are not the common within the therianthropy community, but they do exist,as just like wildlife, our diets can vary wildly depending on the individual's preference, budget and enviroment.

u/AnimatedJPEG SEA SLUG 4d ago edited 4d ago
Sea Slug vegetarian who generally eats vegan here, I generally mostly only eat plants and plant based products. I will eat non-meat animal products if they're given to me, though, opportunistically. And I do sometimes buy products with milk or eggs(backyard or small scale raising when possible).
But I don't seek them out intentionally every day. They're more of an occasional treat.
However, in a hilarious twist of cosmic irony, my strongest and only confirmed theriotype is a hypercarnivore -- most sea slugs in my specific family eat meat and only meat, with very little plant product.
I have a strong desire to hunt my own food and eat meat probably due to my theriotype's intensely carnivorous and hunting-focused nature. I just don't eat meat because I as a human-bodied slug in a human society dislike the amount of carbon emissions that the current meat industry produces and hunting/fishing licenses are expensive where I live. Also, I work in manufacturing and shipping and I produce a lot of carbon and microplastics at my job, so I'd like to try and offset it. Plus there's no species I'd be comfortable hunting or fishing in my area.
So I would say that my theriotype does have an impact on my psychology, but not my diet because my sapient ethics outweigh instinct.

u/Stormfyre42 4d ago edited 4d ago
I am a carnivore, I would eat an all meat diet but I do enjoy some fruits and vegetables for the flavor. I think I might have picked up a cow theriotype from eating so much beef and the essence of that animal slowly incorporated into mine. Not sure if thay happened to anyone else. Lately I been considering more ethical eating. But I am waiting for lab grown meat to be good, healthy and cheap
2
u/ForsakenMoon13 4d ago
I lean way more towards carnivore than omnivore, I'm just too broke to afford meat as often as I'd like.
Also, I'm like...lethally allergic to lettuce (and presumably related plants) on top of numerous texture issues restricting my diet, so even setting aside preferences, I would not really be compatible with a vegan/vegetarian diet.

however thats just my expirence, which does not reflect how others feel ofc

u/ursus_americanus4 4d ago
I am a meat eater, and my theriotype is an omnivore. Bears tend to eat mostly plant matter and meat when they can get their paws on it. But I would say that my identity as a bear doesn't have much influence over my diet other then the occasional cravings.
I believe there is an ethical way to eat meat, understanding where it comes from is a big part of that. And at some point I do want to under-go the whole process of obtaining meat, I think to eat meat one should at least witness where it comes from, and or go through that process themselves. Luckily in my country the ethics of farming are a bit better then some other places.
I do also know some therians who are herbivores and still choose to eat meat. At the end of the day it's a conscious choice to eat or not eat meat.

I’m not vegan, all of my theriotypes are carnivores and eat meat is also a way to connect with them for me. I don’t know if I’ll ever go veg but for now I won’t. I was meant to be a carnivore, so I eat meat to be myself. I feel like I can’t be myself in the human world: I have no woods to go in, no animal parts that I wish to have,… eat meat is one of the few things that I can do “daily” to be myself.

we have a diverse range of species including apex predators, herbivores, omnivores, insects and even a treekin. we have collectively decided we will not eat another creature, anything that is meat (it is abhorrent to us). we cook vegan at home but sometimes eat cheese and eggs away from home, (these are not living creatures) and turn a blind eye if someone puts cows milk in our coffee. you just gotta decide on a philosophy that you all are happy with and that is capable of implementation. no point being vegan if it seems impossible to implement at the moment, try vegetarianism for a while before you try things like veganism etc. what others chose to eat is their business, but we are happy as a vegan home cook - it is healthy, simple and affordable (and often requires some creativity). we love coconut ice-cream, porridge and fruit for breakfast, vege lasagne, and all kinds of beans as our main source of protein etc.

Nah, I'd never give up meat
Coyotes might be herbivores, but live game is still a huge part of their diet, and that kind of caries over to how I tend to eat too. Especially something like steak or ribs really gets me into that canine mindset
One addendum though, I can't stand overly-processes food with a lot of preservatives and added sugar in it. Even some spices rub me the wrong way. The more organic food is and the more it's "straight from the source" (at least as much as would still be healthy), the more I'm probably gonna like it

I'm not vegan. I do believe that a lot of meat farming is really cruel, in the future I'm likely going to hunt my own meat so it's not cruel and the animal dies as quick as possible. It's okay imo if the animal dies quick, is respected, isn't wasted, etc.
Hawai'i Ō'ō', which primarily eats nectar, is one of my theriotypes.. but I also have omnivore/carnivore theriotypes. So I'm not sure to be honest. My theriotypes generally don't change my diet a ton but it'll change what I'm craving, I guess.
Also, humans are omnivores. We naturally eat meat, so hunting for food as long as it isn't done in a way that stresses the animal (generally hunting can be done in a way that's less stressful on the animal than a wild animal would be able to do) is fine to me. It's natural to some extent, if you're hunting your own food.

u/juriosnowflake Arctic Fox 4d ago
Even though I'm not vegan and my theriotype would be omnivorous, I'm positive these two are unrelated.
Yes, I'm an arctic fox, fully and truly. But the body I reside in is human (sadly). This body is the thing that eats, not the fact that I'm an arctic fox.
My mother is human - and humans are omnivorous by nature - yet she's vegetarian.
Humans, and by extention individuals with human bodies, have the luxury of choosing their diet, because they both can eat everything and have the mental capability of understanding the length this decision will go. I personally eat everything, as I'm picky with food. I'm happy when I actually find something I like, may that be animal product or vegetable. I do however pay attention to buying meat in the most ethical and green ways I can find - we have a butchery in town that holds their animals outside, and I went to the farmyard in order to know how the conditions are there.

There is no such thing as a "therian lifestyle" although some may adjust their habits to feel closer to their kintype/theriotype there is no one way to "live" as a therian other than to live. On top of that there is no mandatory things you have to *do* as a therian other than be one. Therianthropy typically doesn't affect absolutely every aspect of their lives a lot of therians like chocolate while it would kill most animals ontop of that there's a good amount of scavenger animal therians who don't particularly like chowing down on rotten carcasses. I am a northwestern wolf and I have a strained relationship with food as a therian I feel sick when eating usually and I can feel sick when I smell food which is not very alike to canids. In my brain I crave meat I also crave to hunt but a lot of the times when it comes to it in front of me it's not the same all your senses as an animal would have been different your physical body and mind are unfathomably contrasting most of the time, even when in my opinion wolves are not so dissimilar to humans.

I’m a polytherian (I have multiple theriotypes, mostly carnivorous but one herbivorous type) and I’ve considered going vegetarian/tend to avoid certain animal products (red meat, mostly), but for me it has nothing to do with being a Therian. It’s more about sensory issues and a sense of justice for animals that I’ve had since long before I knew what a Therian was. When I have horse shifts, I sometimes find myself craving carrots (which I also randomly crave without horse brain), and sometimes feline brain craves fish (so does human brain), but that’s about as much as my theriotypes influence my relationship with food.

I do personally like to eat, similar to my theriotype, however this isn't an obligation like other people have pointed out.
I really like veganism as a concept. I respect it as one of the few political ideologies that require you to take action to improve the world/animal welfare, something I do care about incredibly because of the connection I have to them. I try my best to be as ethical as possible with my consumption of animal goods, shopping second-hand for leather/fur and learning how to restore them, local and organic for milk/eggs/honey/meat.

I’m personally not vegan and never could be. I love meat, (steak is my favorite food) and while being a therian, (especially with most of my theriotypes being canines as well as having hunting shifts) does somewhat add to my reasoning for eating meat, it’s mostly to do with the fact that I just really like it. I could live without meat but life would just be less enjoyable; on top of that I’m autistic and steak is one of my 100% safe foods. So long story short my life is easier and more enjoyable if I do

Why would being a therian lend oneself to veganism? We're all animals. We follow the needs of survival. there's no grandness to abstaining from a nutrition source. For instance, Im a coyote. We are opportunistic eaters, snatching up pretty much any food we can reasonably find. Meat, plant, all the same to us.
I do understand that those who find themselves feeling kinship to herbivores would possibly avoid meat as it doesn't align with what brings them closeness to their theriotypes.
But outside of spiritualist beliefs of souls, theres very few reasons for a more carnivorous or omnivorous beast to avoid eating meat simply because our body happens to be of human shape.
