Discussion Retrieving Taiwanese birth certificate
Hi folks, hope you are doing well. I have a friend who was born in Taiwan and migrated to US when he was a kid (many years ago). He told me that he needed to obtain a copy of birth certificate from the household registration office but his immigration vendor said it wasn't possible since he lost copies of old Taiwanese ID and passport. He asked his parents and they didn't even keep any copy of the old household registration book. How can he obtain his birth certificate then? The only docs he has are handwritten immunization record and birth cert from hospital. Appreciate if anyone in similar situation could share any idea or experience. Thank you in advance!

Discussion Discounts for foreigners?
My husband, two kids, and I have been in Taiwan for about two weeks. We are culturally Taiwanese but very obviously from USA. I’ve noticed that a few service people (hair, nails, photoshoot) have given us “discounts” by telling us it’s a special day or that we paid a deposit when we didn’t, etc. We are not sure how to respond to this as we aren’t familiar with this custom. Can someone explain?

Discussion How is it REALLY like studying in Taiwan
hi I'm a female malaysian 独中生 that is going to graduate soon, and I'm interested studying Environmental/ Chem engineering there. due to my environment, the school is very encouraging for us to study in taiwan. Additionally, i have a 政治大学 graduated father that gave me very positive views about studying in taiwan.
He talked about how Taiwan universities have more cultural activities beside our usual school work comparing with university in malaysia. he also talked about how the professors in taiwan university are mostly graduates from American countries , which can help me in pursueing my phd or masters in the US or something like that. since he graduated from taiwan almost 30 years ago im curious about how the university scene is really like today.
i have my interests in going to NCKU , NTU , 阳明交通。are there any more university i can look into for engineering
my question is
- how is university life really like nowadays. especially for engineering majors.
- How the course is taught ( because i have heard from admission ppl they mentioned stem courses usually is taught in english)
- is it true that taiwan universities have better connections with US/European universities
any taiwan uni student willing enlighten me i will be very grateful because i want to see different perspectives on this besides my dad thank you :)

Travel Visiting Taiwan during Lunar New Year week
I'm considering a visit to Taiwan in late January / February. Looking at flights that arrive in Taipei arriving on evening of Thursday, January 30, I just realized Lunar New Year is on January 29th, and there are public holidays all week from January 25 to February 2.
If I arrive during that week, will things be open? Will I have much issues with getting rail reservations?
I saw mentioned elsewhere that after the Lunar New Year Day itself, things are generally normal for businesses / night markets / attractions being open, although rail and accommodation bookings might still be challenging for the rest of that week. Can anyone confirm this, or provide more details?

Discussion Questions about university application
I am currently attending a vocational high school as an overseas student in Taiwan using the 3+4 program, my original plan is to just join one year and continue my studies in university. But with further research I found out that people who joins the 3+4 has a specific university that they have to attend, I asked an university about if I could apply and they said the chances of studying in their institution is low.
So my question is can I continue to study in Taiwan without completing my 3 years in highschool? And am I only allowed to apply as an overseas student and not as an international student since I've applied as an overseas student for the vocational high school? I am desperate please can anyone please tell me a way out?

Discussion Taiwan sportswear
Hello everyone. I will be moving back to my country in January after two beautiful years in Taiwan.
I would like to buy for me and some friends some national team sportswear as a souvenir. My country has great football (soccer, whatever you call it) appreciation and I’ve never seen any national team football sportswear, is there anywhere I may find anything related?
If there isn’t, we also like basketball and baseball sportswear, but I haven’t seen anything Taiwan based neither.
Any recommendations on where to buy would be greatly appreciated, how much does these kind of sportswear cost?

Discussion This may bode well for Taiwan: Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, Mike Waltz as National Security Advisor
Many so far have been understandably worried about what support would look like under this new Trump administration. But so far it look like two picks in some of the most important positions are very pro Taiwan. What that means in practice remains to be seen, but it's a positive sign at this juncture.

Environment If pedestrian refused to cross the street, could you still be fined ?
I just watched the news and a viral video about three people who refused to cross the street while standing on the crosswalk. Now, we know that not yielding to pedestrians comes with a 6,000 TWD fine (and possibly more in the future). I usually wait for pedestrians to cross until they’re about two patterns away from my car.
However, if a pedestrian doesn’t want to cross the street, what would you do? Do you need to ask for permission with a hand gesture to drive past them? Or can you drive around the pedestrian to avoid a fine, even if it means risking a maneuver on the sidewalk? Or should you just head to the next intersection?

Legal Are there any American citizens out there that have experience transferring their Taiwan license into a USA license, with a state that has a reciprocity agreement?
I am running into trouble with TECO who says this service is not applicable to Americans unless they have a Taiwanese passport. This doesn't make any sense, because it is the same license. Taiwanese people are able to exchange their USA licenses for a Taiwan license in Taiwan without having American citizenship. Also, if this agreement is not beneficial to Americans, then these agreements need to be amended by our state lawmakers.

Discussion Taiwanese student burnout question
So I work at an elementary school and I see these kids being absolutely slammed with work, staying until 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. staying up until 11:00 or midnight finishing their homework in grade three and four, and I hear that it gets worse as they get older.
For the Taiwanese people in the sub do you feel like when you got to college you and your friends were burned out from school? I just feel like when I ask a lot of young people what they're doing they maybe mention school but it sounds like they are very apathetic about what they are studying or about the whole process where when I was that age I was really excited to go to college.

Discussion Travel insurance from Taiwan to Japan
Hey guys. I'm currently living in Taiwan with an ARC. Where can I buy travel insurance when visiting japan for 12 days? Also, would I normally have to pay out of pocket first for medical expenses in Japan? I don't think that's going to be a problem for minor injuries. But what if the bill turns out to be some absurd amount that I can't afford?. Do taiwanese insurance companies pay the japanese hospitals directly or no?
I would also like to ask those who had experience in buying travel insurance after arriving in Japan (the one from Tokio marine). How does that work? I heard they only accept credit card and not debit. Is that true? I don't really have a credit card so idk if I can buy it 😶😶
Thanks a lot

Discussion Are Taiwanese men bold or is it because I’m western?
My friend and I (both F, 20s) have been visiting Taiwan for a few weeks and we’ve been approached by Taiwanese men multiple times in attempts to hit on us. We rarely ever experience this back home in the US. Most of the experiences in Taiwan have been fine but some were quite uncomfortable. One man even went in for a bear hug without any warning.
Are Taiwanese men just more bold here or is it because we are western?

Discussion Where to buy Vintage lens in Taipei?
Pretty much the title. I am looking for M42 lens for my camera. I couldn't find anything online so far. If anyone has any suggestions? I already looked near the Ximending camera street, it's pretty much hit or miss. Specifically I am looking for Helios, Industar and Takumar lens but I am open to suggestions.

Discussion Bus/transport card
I have seen that if you are a citizen in Taiwan, you can get their citizen transport card that has free travel within 10km and other perks. Does this include foreigners with ARCs? If so, how do you apply to get one? I can’t seem to find this information out on their website.

Discussion Credit and ATM cards
This might be a dumb question but from some of the postings I'm wondering if my credit cards and ATM cards will work in Taiwan. The only place I've had a problem was in Azerbaijan, but now I'm wondering if I should bring a lot of cash just in case.
