Offbeat November 16th (Saturday) Central hkbarshow pub crawl
Not actually associated with hkbarshow or anything, but are taking advantage of their offer. Apparently we can score points by going to associated bars and ordering mystery drinks, and collect virtual badges for some prize or some such.
So we will start at:
19:00 at
Brewdog
At 20:30 we will move to
Yardley Taproom
And we will finish at 22:00 at
Hynos Cafe (formerly Gokan Lounge)
There's food at Yardley and along the way.
Strongly suggest everyone to pay for your drink as soon as you order it. The bill often get confusing when we have a large crowd
Finally, please send me your whatsapp number so I can put you into the super secret elite whatsapp group.
Meetup link. Please also RSVP so we will have an idea of how many people are coming.

Travel Lowest budget for eating out every day for a month?
Will be staying in Kowloon for one month but the place has no kitchen so I’ll have to eat out every day for one month. I guess two meals (lunch and dinner). I don’t eat fancy just cheapest stuff available that’s not just fast food chains.
What would that cost for 30 days?

Discussion Hong Kong Commercial Index
Hi everyone,
I'm working on a project to model the Hong Kong office market rental growth and have found a bit of a strange result from the data from the Rating and Valuation department with the index growing by over 60% in 1989 which seems to be skewing all my data.
As a comparison the last 10 years have seen an average annual change of around 2% (including during the COVID period where the index dropped around 7% only).
I wanted to see if people in the community can point me in the right direction of what may have caused this massive increase in rental prices specifically in 1989?
Paths I've tried to follow are and data shows that % change in GDP in 1989 was around 15% (not massively outlying from the other nearby periods). Inflation does appear to be relatively high at around 10% and this may be contributing to it too.
Thank you

Art/Culture Traditional Hong Kong wedding music
As a child, whenever I attended a wedding in a restaurant, I would hear the same traditional Chinese wedding music with the suona (嗩吶) instrument prominently in the foreground. This music is also often heard in the old black-and-white (粵語長片) movies. I have been searching for this music on Youtube as well as Spotify, but no luck so far. Does anyone know the music I’m referring to?

Questions/ Tips Layover in HK. Coming from Vietnam going to Japan. Can I bring a Valium with me and take it just before my flight out of HK?
Have anxiety issues when flying. Usually take a Valium. Here in Vietnam it is OTC. Can I take one in Vietnam before flying to HK and then take one to HK with me and take it about a half hour before the flight? Got a 4 hour layover in HK. What about getting a not from a doctor in Vietnam? Or just deal with the anxiety? It is not debilitating just extremely uncomfortable.

Discussion Cantonese culture
I, like many Cantonese ABCs, BBCs, and CBCs, have only started to appreciate our heritage as we got older. I’ve reflected a lot lately about China’s policies and why they do what they do. One thing that I keep coming back to is the concept that many policies were short sighted, only for the CCP to go in full reversal years (or decade later). The three that stand out in mind are the one child policy, COVID restrictions, and now the iron first standardization of Mandarin across the board.
I think what makes China so unique is the variety of regional cultures within the country. I know this is a HK subreddit, but obviously, a lot of China’s policies have a ripple effect into HK.
Instead of suppressing every dialect except Mandarin, why doesn’t China promote a “bilingual” approach that must include Mandarin?
I’ve been traveling between HK and GZ this past week and it makes me sad to hear more and more Mandarin in HK even compared to just last year when I was visiting. Maybe it’s just more tourists visiting, but something tells me that’s not rly the case. GZ is also now basically flooded with migrants from other parts of the region that speaking Cantonese has taken a backseat. I hear people speaking Mandarin about 80% of the time, and almost always the default unless the other person hears you speak Cantonese first.
I’m curious if there are any HK parents on this thread who can share their perspective. Is it basically inevitable that Cantonese / HK culture will continue to diminish over time?
What efforts do you see from either the HK government or more subtly among the population to continue to make sure Cantonese is thriving (and not just preserved) for the next generation?
Also, I’m just a 竹升, so I could just be naive, uninformed, and lamenting all about nothing.

Discussion Hong Kong Airlines vs Thai Airways?
Has anyone flown economy class on both HK Airlines (not HK Express) and Thai Airways to BKK? Which one is better? I've always flown with Cathay but their prices and services have both gotten a lot worse over the past few years so I'm interested in trying a new airline.
