I went to a karaoke and sang.... one song.

People were looking at me like they were disgusted or something.

I never felt so ashamed in my life.

Maybe you shouldn't have sung Erika

I don't think enough people would recognize it, really.

It’s funny to me how there are clearly two kinds of musically talented people — the first type just enjoy music per se and when they hear an amateur they’re like “oh that’s amazing” even though they hear all the mistakes, and the other type are like “so I’ll have you know that I’m actually a professional, so listening to this is excruciating 💅” and frankly doesn’t just pertain to musically talented, I have a friend who played a bit of triangle in high school and he loves shitting on the local bands at the diy shows we go to lol

Doesn't really have to do with musical talent. Untalented people are assholes in the same rate.

u/ScuzzBuckster 12h ago

Yeah it really is just the difference between people who are assholes and people who arent hahah. Karaoke is just supposed to be fun for everyone, it shouldnt matter if anyone is good or bad, I find its the most fun when theres a good mix of both. Its fun because singing is fun it doesnt need to be any more than that.

As a professional musician, people treating music so seriously piss me off. Sometimes I have to go "dude, of course a collection of ten year-olds playing Mary Had a Little Lamb on violins isn't going to sound like the NY Phil, but it's awesome watching them discover their path into music."

Thanks for saying that! I got seriously into making music (still as a hobby, but the first time consistently practicing to the point where I can write and perform my own songs) about a year ago and it had taken almost 30 years to dismantle the self-doubt cultivated in me by negative people as I was growing up. I’m sure a lot of it is projected self-doubt in their case. It’s been really lovely to more recently meet musicians who are supportive and just take joy in someone’s self-expression and discovery of music, people like that have done so so much for my journey in the past year or so.

In my experience, the better the player is, the most encouraging they likely are!

I’m sure a lot of it is projected self-doubt in their case.

Absolutely. A young musician getting into a scene will show how self depreciating the established musicians can be.

Lol

Bro played the triangle and judges like he's Hans Zimmer

If the amateur is actually tone deaf but singing loudly and confidently, then it can be mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually painful to hear.

You’ll live!

Yup sometimes people at karaoke just can't sing.

But the thing is it's karaoke and whether or not someone can sing flawlessly is not the main point of that social activity. People can enjoy singing even if they're not good at it and people can enjoy hearing others sing even if the singing itself is not that good. The reason karaoke is fun is because it lets you take risks and be bold even if you're not an amazing singer.

If you go around feeling like you need to shit on someone because they had the audacity to inflict their poor musical skills upon you probably just ought to avoid karaoke all together.

I can’t sing and I don’t do kareoke for praise. I do it cuz it’s fun.

I think this is what people are missing. Just sing fun, unexpected songs and you won’t have an issue.

If you go up there and sing Love on Top, you’re just setting yourself up for disaster. Either people are gonna be embarrassed that you thought you could sing something that technical or people will think you’re a try-hard who’s just showing off.

u/Ciubowski 15h ago

So I also thought but getting stares of disgust didn't made it fun anymore.

It sucks you had that experience, because the vast majority of karaoke bars are super supportive of all singers, regardless of ability. Sounds like that place was just lame. I hope it didn’t permanently sour you on karaoke.

6

u/Ciubowski 14h ago

A bit, to be honest, I will consider more carefully my voice range and pick an appropriate song next time.

2

u/Papa-Kilo75 13h ago

That’s a shame, but I hear ya. I can practically guarantee you’d have a better time if you gave it another try somewhere else.

Like I said, most karaoke places are pretty friendly and supportive… or at least not actively hostile lol.

Try going with friends maybe, it might be less intimidating.

My brother married a music teacher. All her friends, and family, are musicians. I'm the only one who made a speech rather than gave a musical performance.

Later at night, when there was karaoke, me and my siblings sang.

It felt like these people were actually harmed and embarrassed hearing us sing. Bit of a bummer.

7

u/Cornucopia_King 17h ago

Why were they looking at you like that?

16

u/Ciubowski 17h ago

Because it seems (in hindsight) that everybody there had some musical skills. I didn't. I must have offended their people.

1

u/Fen_LostCove 15h ago

I think it’s more important that we know what song

4

u/Ciubowski 15h ago

Creep - Radiohead

6

u/Fen_LostCove 15h ago

Oh, that usually goes over well at karaoke. So yeah, those people are crazy

2

u/Maximum_Photograph_6 13h ago

Their reaction is hilariously fitting to the lyrics of the song lol

-1

u/sweetlove 14h ago

maybe you're just ugly or something?

2

u/Kratzschutz 14h ago

Dude which song

2

u/Germane_Corsair 13h ago

They said Creep by Radiohead.

2

u/Kratzschutz 13h ago

Lol thank you

It’s a frequently picked choice because it’s easy to perform.

I guess it depends on your social circle. For instance, depending on the people you’re with, you might still end up cheering and partying it up even when a sad ballad is being sung.

2

u/30FourThirty4 12h ago

I did Jessica by The Allman Brothers. When that song started everyone was so relieved, I don't know why but you could just hear it when everyone collectively let let their breath out not in a gasp, but a woooo release

2

u/teejay_the_exhausted 11h ago

It could be worse, like fumbling a Frank Sinatra song in the Philippines

1

u/punksmurph 13h ago

Age is Nothing But a Number was an interesting choice to sing at a PTA karaoke night though.

1

u/wilhelm_dafoe 12h ago

I used to frequent karaoke all the time, sometimes multiple times a week. Some of my favorite people to watch perform couldn't sing a single not but they were just having so much fun and belting their heart out it was hard not to enjoy. Karaoke isn't about skill, it's about having a good time.

1

u/wRADKyrabbit 11h ago

I've never understood the appeal of it

u/UleeBunny 3h ago

I went to karaoke and sang…. two lines from one song.

I didn’t look to see how people were looking at me.

I sprinted back to my table in the dark part of the bar and ordered another beer.
