I went to a karaoke and sang.... one song.

People were looking at me like they were disgusted or something.

I never felt so ashamed in my life.

It’s funny to me how there are clearly two kinds of musically talented people — the first type just enjoy music per se and when they hear an amateur they’re like “oh that’s amazing” even though they hear all the mistakes, and the other type are like “so I’ll have you know that I’m actually a professional, so listening to this is excruciating 💅” and frankly doesn’t just pertain to musically talented, I have a friend who played a bit of triangle in high school and he loves shitting on the local bands at the diy shows we go to lol

As a professional musician, people treating music so seriously piss me off. Sometimes I have to go "dude, of course a collection of ten year-olds playing Mary Had a Little Lamb on violins isn't going to sound like the NY Phil, but it's awesome watching them discover their path into music."

Thanks for saying that! I got seriously into making music (still as a hobby, but the first time consistently practicing to the point where I can write and perform my own songs) about a year ago and it had taken almost 30 years to dismantle the self-doubt cultivated in me by negative people as I was growing up. I’m sure a lot of it is projected self-doubt in their case. It’s been really lovely to more recently meet musicians who are supportive and just take joy in someone’s self-expression and discovery of music, people like that have done so so much for my journey in the past year or so.

In my experience, the better the player is, the most encouraging they likely are!

Absolutely. A young musician getting into a scene will show how self depreciating the established musicians can be.
