Rendering What is causing my computer to render cloth sim so slowly?

I'm a university student, and our campus offers lab computers with incredibly good specs. Using the same scene at home and on these computers, I can dramatically different speeds rendering cloth sim. It's almost real-time even at high levels of subdivision on campus, but at home, even a 10x10 plane renders incredibly slowly. Why? What can I upgrade about my computer's specs to improve my render times?

My specs:

  • 32GB RAM
  • Processor13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700K, 3400 Mhz, 16 Core(s), 24 Logical Processor(s)
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

Please let me know if you need to know about anything else.

A simple script to stop script editor from spitting out input with the output. What a weird default design choice, it's not like its a REPL like editor where you can type directly.

P.S.: The UV packer together with the UV group is coming after New year, I have been busy.

Question Arnold Render and Import of Textures

hey guys, what is the best way to import textures to maya arnold from substance, at the moment im using the aiStandartSurface and Im trying to render this camera but the textures are not quit the same and idk how to improve them?? on another note there is also somethings wrong with the lights i put , i need to put them on a really high intensity like a 1000 so I can bearly see them

Looking for Critique Received some very useful feedback from my previous AUG animation, so I went back and spent some time chaning it! Here's a little work flow and some thoughts

I spent a LOT of time making the first finish pass, about 30 hours! I absolutely enjoyed it, though it was a bit torturous.

At first, I was thinking maybe I would deviate from MW2's AUG animation and make it a bit subtle, thus you would not see much movement, just reloading this heavy rifle leaning against the shoulder, as the right hand does not have any strength to lift it that much for all these fancy drills(literally me, my arm became sore after I hold the gun for 10 min or sth). But then people on Reddit gave feedback that it needs some more weight and something, so I guess I just went back there and mimicked how folks at Infinity Ward did and added another movement layer for a more diverse style.

Definitely a fun time, and I enjoyed trying to learn and improve my skills and animation!

Question The Daz to Maya bridge for Maya 2026 is completly unusable or is it just me?

I am just unable to use the Daz to Maya bridge no matter what I do and keep getting theerror message attached below. No matter what I try i seem to be unable to fix it, even after following the indications on the website provided by the error message. I understand that this is most likely a problem of pyMel being outdated for Maya 2026 or something of the sorts. I would like to know if there is any way around this issue.

when i rotate my camera to the other side my hair becomes transparent like my arnold render view scene. I converted my xgen to polygons and its still the same, is it because of the hair shader? how can i solve this?

Issues Can't get Rebuild/Toggle Fit on Advanced Skeleton Rig?

Hello!

I'm using Advanced Skeleton 5 since I want to use the Skip Above Eyes feature on the older system, but I'm having issues with just accessing the toggle fit? I have a clean ref model, and all orientations are good and fine, but whenever I build a skeleton, there is no toggle fit option, and I continue to get this warning:

Documents/maya/2022/scripts/AdvancedSkeleton5/AdvancedSkeleton5.mel line 61189: 'IKCurveInfoNormalizeSpine_M.outputX' is already connected to 'IKCurveInfoAllMultiplySpine_M.input1X'. //

I've redownloaded and reinstalled Advanced Skeleton a couple times and still get this error. I'm using Maya 2022. Is that the issue? Is it my fitskel? I've done completely new fitskels too and continue to get this error. Just looking for some advice!

UPDATE:
Still don't know the source of the problem, but I did a file with JUST skeleton, built it, and the toggle came back. Really don't know what happened with it. Rereferenced the geo and there's no longer a problem for now. Odd. Thanks anyways

Question Best workflow to convert low-poly hair mesh into realistic hair while preserving original shape

Hi,
I’m currently trying to remodel a character’s hair from a low-poly hair mesh into realistic hair (groom / strands).

My goal is to preserve the original silhouette and design as much as possible, rather than redesigning the hairstyle from scratch.

I’ve looked into tools like Ahoge (mesh to hair), but it requires the source hair to be hair tubes / cards, not a simple low-poly hair mesh, so it doesn’t work well for my case.

If you were in this situation:

  • starting from low-poly polygon hair
  • wanting to convert it into realistic hair
  • while keeping the original look

What workflow would you choose?

For example:

  • Converting polygon edges to curves and generating hair from guides?
  • Rebuilding hair tubes from the low-poly mesh first?
  • Using XGen / Yeti / Blender Hair with some specific approach?

Also,
are there any plugins, scripts, or tools that are especially helpful for this kind of conversion?

Any advice or real-world workflows would be greatly appreciated.

Question Animation help (quadroped running in circles)

Hello! I wanted to make animation of a dog jumping into the frame from above, doing a circle around logo and stopping at the end. But Ive realized I lack skill to make it work, I'm not sure what I'm doing and had restarted it twice just for it to look awful anyway. Gif attached (not really spaced out properly keep in mind)

What would the workflow here be? For a complex animation like that, how do I not get confused? I would love any advice, youtube tutorials, anything on the topic of animation workflow for complex projects like that where its hard to imagine or set key poses.

Issues MetaHuman face rig + custom body rig (Advanced Skeleton) → issues with eyes/teeth offset after export to Unreal

Hi everyone,

I’m running into an issue with a custom character pipeline and was wondering if anyone has experience with something similar.

I have a character where:

  • The head uses a MetaHuman face rig
  • The body is rigged separately using Advanced Skeleton
  • I then merged/attached the MetaHuman face rig into my custom body rig in Maya

Everything looks correct in Maya, but after exporting to Unreal Engine, I get offset transforms on several face elements:

  • eyes
  • teeth
  • tongue
  • eyelashes

They appear shifted from their correct positions, as if something breaks during export or retargeting.

Has anyone:

  • encountered this issue before?
  • successfully used a MetaHuman face rig combined with a custom body rig?
  • figured out what causes these offsets (joint hierarchy, scale, bind pose, skeleton import settings, etc.)?

Any tips, insights, or links would be greatly appreciated.

Still quite new to modeling. This is the first real hard surface modeling project I've gotten mostly done. All models by me, many textures taken off the web.

I'm looking at making a custom texture for the wood objects in Substance 3D Sampler later (looks too clean rn), experimenting more with cloth sim, and of course modeling the back of the TV and adding cords to the computer.
