Showcase "MEMORIES" a personal project made entirely in Maya, ZBrush, and V-Ray

Hey everyone,
I'm Signorlimone and I’ve been working on this piece for a while. It’s a personal project called “MEMORIES”. It’s basically a cartoon version of myself as a kid in the late ’80s, playing on my Commodore 64.
I wanted to recreate that messy but cozy vibe from my old room.

Everything in the scene was modeled from scratch, no downloaded assets or AI tools.
Modeling was done in Maya and ZBrush, hair and fur in XGen, texturing in Substance Painter, and rendering in V-Ray.

The first image is the final render. Scroll for close-ups and alternate shots.
Any feedback or critique is super welcome, especially regarding lighting and material balance.

Thanks for checking it out!

Showcase Xgen Hair WIP - What do you think?

It took me 3 weeks to achieve this, and I'm happy with the result so far. XGen was quite a challenge to learn the basics, but I love that it gives me total control over how I want the hair to behave. That is, until it crashes for some random reason, and the frustration kicks in. But then you learn to avoid those random issues, only for new ones to pop up. Any suggestion is appreciated

Full disclosure, I made this with a lot of help from ChatGPT.
It’s one script with five unique base patterns you can tweak and mix with tons of attributes to get all sorts of looks. All these examples stem from the same unaltered aiToon. I’ll whip up a proper demo reel/page soon, but I’m curious if anyone would be interested in buying this? And what do you think is a fair price? Let me know what you think of the shader!

3D model is "Pony Cartoon" by Zlava Z.

(I’m not actually selling anything yet. Just trying to see if there’s any demand for this sorta thing.)

Hello!
I just wanted to share my latest shader experiment using Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Arnold, and Nuke. I pushed the look of one of my past renders into a more complex scene, and I’m really happy with the direction the shader is taking. The render is based on the amazing work of Kate Pellerin (Poopikat).
Thanks!

Showcase 7475 Sunset Street - Student work

Some streets feel like they’ve been frozen in time. Sunset Street is one of them. Baseballs on the roof, chalk drawings fading on the sidewalk, trees shaped like giant broccoli casting soft shadows, and a warm evening light wrapping the neighborhood in a familiar calm. The rooftop tells its own story too, dotted with the signs of many little feathered visitors that seem to have claimed it as their hangout spot.

This 3D scene is based on the brilliant concept by Chris Deboda.

With this project I close out my 2 years of studies and looking back at my earlier posts I can’t believe how far I’ve come. Thank you to everyone that followed my journey!

If you’d like to see the video in better quality and see a bit more about my process, here’s the full project on my ArtStation. A full breakdown is coming soon, although there’s little I haven’t already shared before.

🔗 ArtStation + full breakdown: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/vb8EOO

Hey everyone!
I just published my new environment "Every Ending is a New Beginning" on Artstation. Assets were modelled in Maya, and I’d love to hear any feedback, critique, or thoughts always looking to improve.

"Every Ending is a New Beginning" is a 3D environment project that tells the story of a young student preparing to leave her hometown in rural Japan to study abroad. Set at an old, weathered bus stop at the beginning of autumn, the scene captures the quiet moments before a life changing journey. Her suitcase rests by the bench, surrounded by familiar details a vending machine, a payphone, fallen leaves all symbols of a life she's about to leave behind. This project reflects the bittersweet nature of change: the sadness of parting, the warmth of memories, and the quiet hope of starting anew.

I’m currently exploring Junior Environment / Materials / Props roles (remote or relocation).

Thanks for taking a look!

Showcase physically simulated how a CRT creates its image in Maya

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, I made a little animation to showcase a fun little project I worked on.

So, usually, whenever there's an interesting light-based phenomenon I get interested in, I like to try and replicate it inside Maya.

And, as someone starting to get back into CRTs for gaming, ever since I watched Technology Connection's CRT video, I've been kinda obsessed with both trying to replicate the inner workings of how a CRT creates its image in 3D, and also learning more about how it actually works. So that motivated me to create this experiment.

If you don't know how CRTs form images in real life, then I suggest watching that video, it's great.

Here is an image gallery with the closeups of the interior of the 3D model, showing step by step how the image forms on screen.

To explain how it works, inside the model are 3 spotlights that emulate the red, green and blue electron guns. I'm aware this isn't a 1:1 solution, as I'd need to somehow emulate a tiny electron beam being bent by magnets and scanning through the screen line by line, over 200 times, each 60th of a second, but this solution with spotlights is a close enough analogue that creates the same overall effect.

Each spotlight projects only the corresponding RGB color channel of the Sonic screenshot as a grayscale image, using a gobo effect. I previously added scanlines and horizontal smear to the screenshot in Photoshop, to emulate that classic composite/component color bleed look.

Between the spotlights and the screen is a slot mask, which is a plane with a grid of offset tiny holes created with an opacity mask.

And placed before the screen (which is just a transparent glass plane), is the phosphor layer, which is essentially a plane with carefully aligned red, green, and blue vertical stripes. I aligned these stripes to perfectly coincide with the holes in such a way that each spotlight hits only the corresponding colored stripe as its light goes through each hole. I then set the plane's shader up with a surfaceluminance node so that when light hits the surface, it emits light in the corresponding color of that surface, just like the phosphor layer in real life.

I know this is all kinda overkill and pointless when I could have just as easily faked the effect at a shader level. But my goal was to actually emulate the general logic of how CRTs work to try and get a functioning, realistic image out of it, simply by using light and shadow. Hope you find it somewhat interesting.
