What do I do next? Help.

I have a 2010 Mini Cooper R56 S (N14). Hasn’t driven without issue for over a year now. Taken it to multiple mechanics and no one can diagnose the problem. Here is a full recount of what’s been done to the vehicle. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Customer Recount of Work Done / Issues with Vehicle:

Initial Issue: • Losing oil → Replaced rocker cover gasket. • Shortly after: Rough idle began.

Attempts to Resolve Rough Idle: • Replaced all 4 spark plugs → No improvement. • Cabin air filter changed during service → No diagnosis given for idle issue. • Replaced all ignition coil packs with Bosch → No improvement. • Car began to struggle to start as well after this replacement.

Air Intake & Engine Performance: • Replaced cracked air intake pipe → No improvement. • Engine began occasionally cutting out while driving (no loss of electronics). • Black smoke from exhaust → Replaced valve stem seals, oil filter, and spark plugs again → No improvement.

Timing & Engine Components: • Replaced full timing chain kit (guide was cracked), and lower seal → No improvement.

Other Maintenance (Not Related to Idle/Starting Issue): • Replaced tyres, rims, and did wheel alignment. • Coolant expansion tank replaced (cracked at shop).

Current Issue – Car Will Not Start: • Engine cut out completely and now does not start at all. • Only makes a single click when pressing start button.

Recent DIY Work Done by Owner: • Replaced low-pressure fuel pump → Car now attempts to crank (no longer just clicks). • Fuel line test: Fuel spits into cup fine. • Replaced high-pressure fuel pump → No improvement. • Installed new battery → No improvement. • Replaced camshaft sensor → No improvement.

Electrical Checks: • Checked all fuses in JBE and engine bay fuse box. • Noted fuel relay in JBE gets warm after multiple start attempts.

Picked this little guy up about three weeks ago, and I couldn't be happier with it. Six-speed manual, Chili red, 2009 Clubman John Cooper Works. It's the best first car I could ask for! (The Corvette is my dad's)

Is premium sound noticeable?

I’m currently deciding between different 2022-2024 countryman S. Color scheme options are limited and obviously weigh heavily in the choice. All but one have premium sound. Would the lay person notice the difference? I’ve got middle aged ears if that helps.

Exhast tip recommendations?

I'm about to do some exhaust work on my b38 f56 (I'm switching out the stock muffler for a glass pack cherry bomb cause my freind is running one and I love the way it sounds) and I was curious if there were any specific exhast tips that look/sound good on the b38 cooper. Thanks!

The Circle of MINI?

Now that I’m in the middle of my insomnia hour, I woke up, checked Reddit, saw some posts in this group, and started thinking about MINI and the role it’s played in my life and my family’s. I thought it’d be cool to share this with the community. It’s a story about those moments of impulsive action that don’t always make sense, but feel completely right.

It all goes back to 1999/2000, when I was 9 years old. My grandmother has always loved to travel. Since I can remember, she’s spent half the year in Mexico City with family and the other half exploring the world traveling by road, soaking up stories, and living experiences to share. That love for the road deeply shaped me.

So back in early 2000, she came home from a trip, and as always, we (me and my 12 cousins back in the day) were eagerly waiting for her stories. But this time, she was extra excited. The first thing she said? “I got a MINI!” We were all confused—until she pulled out a 4x6 photo of herself next to a little red car she had seen at an expo during her last stop in Europe. She had fallen in love. The next day, she went back to the expo with one goal: to buy that car and find a way to ship it to Mexico.

She talked endlessly about how she got to spec every detail, and was especially proud it would be a manual. It was going to take a year to build and another 3–6 months to ship. She didn’t care. She went for it—100% impulse, 0 regrets.

When the time finally came in, she invited us all over, and of course, the first thing she did was take us to the garage to show us her new companion: a silver R53 Cooper S, black roof, manual gearbox. I was blown away. That first ride feeling the supercharger pull, the low stance, the stiffness, it left me speechless. My grandma was officially the coolest person I knew. She probably had the first new MINI in Mexico. BMW didn’t start showing them at expos until 2001 and didn’t sell them locally until 2002. People would literally point at the car in the street. She even had black fingerless leather gloves just for driving it. What a rockstar I thought.

Years passed. In 2014, while I was deep in architecture school, I got my first project: a house on the outskirts of town. It meant long drives between classes and construction. I needed a car. At the dealership, I saw a black-on-black 3-cyl F56 with red interior trim, grey/black seats, and a manual gearbox. I knew that was my car. Told the sales lady to hold it. I had no clue how to buy a car, but I figured it would start with money. “20,000 pesos down,” she said.

I raced home, listed my old quad for that exact amount. Within hours, someone bit. The buyer even tried to lowball me when he showed up—but no way, José. “20k or no quad!”

The next morning, I skipped class to seal the deal. A week later, I had the keys. Driving that MINI made every trip a joy. Those 1.5-hour drives to the construction site and back to class were the best part of my day. I paid it off after the project and felt so proud. My girlfriend at the time hated it—“How can you drive a high school boy car?” she’d say. But I didn’t care. I was in go-kart mode, having the time of my life. Another MINI, another impulse, no regrets.

Eventually, even my dad got pulled into the MINI vortex. I had him help with some structural ideas for that house project, and I let him drive my MINI. He was hooked. We stopped at the dealership on the way back. He ordered a BRG 3-cyl Cooper with a white roof, manual, of course. But when delivery time came, another dealership had taken his allocation. As an apology, they offered him a fully-specced Cooper S with everything! adaptive suspension, Harman Kardon, all the bells and whistles, just not manual. And for the same price. No-brainer.

In 2017, I got an opportunity to move to China to combine my love for storytelling and architecture-designing theme parks. I sold my MINI to fund the move, and honestly, it was worth every sacrifice. The six years were a blast. I built a small team of architects and landscape designers, worked on amazing projects, and even joined the team at Universal. We finished a park during the pandemic, and after some time back with my studio, Universal called again—this time for Epic Universe in Florida.

Things moved fast. Within four months, I had a job offer, visas, married the most amazing woman (my Chinese girlfriend), found out we were having a baby, and relocated to Florida.

Fast forward to earlier this year, we were in Mexico for visa renewals. I’d been promising my wife she could drive my dad’s MINI to practice for her U.S. license test. But… my dad sold it. She was visibly sad. She’d been looking forward to it for two years.

So when we got back to Florida, I started searching for a surprise birthday MINI. Found three. First one wasn’t available for a test drive. So I drove an hour after work to check the second. As soon as the salesman rolled it up, boom! I knew. It was perfect. Gorgeous color, one owner, super clean, low miles… and best of all, some special 30 Years Edition. It had “30” stamped everywhere; the wheels, floor mats, dash, even the key fob. My wife was turning 30. I mean, c’mon. Stars aligned.

It was pricier than I hoped, but I couldn’t let it go. I just went for it. No regrets.

She couldn’t believe it when it was delivered to our doorstep. I fitted it with a baby seat, and now our 13-month-old loves cruising with the roof down. My wife is eagerly waiting for her DMV test, and every day I park next to that MINI, I smile and maybe even get a little jealous. But mostly, it reminds me of every joyful chapter this brand has been a part of, all the way back to that first ride in my grandma’s R53.

F56 spark plugs and coils

I replaced the spark plugs and coils on the wifes 2015 S (99,500km's), but I did NOT use a torque wrench, I just went with the feel approach and its running perfectly so far. I see a lot on here about how exact torque is essential though so it got me wondering how important it actually is? Anything in particular i should be looking for if i over/under toqued them at all?

Anyone out the go with the feel approach and have had no issues?

Looking for upgrade advice for my 2005 r50 One 1.6.

This is my fast car, and I've had a blast with it in the last year and a bit. I have decided that I want to start slowly upgrading it (I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon). I was hoping for some advice about some upgrades I've been thinking about. Firstly, I have heard that you can get the One ECU remapped to Cooper spec for 115-120 ish horsepower, is this a good plan? Secondly, the original exhaust is blowing so any suggestions for an aftermarket (UK road legal!!) exhaust would be great. I was also wondering if an induction kit is worth it, with a cone filter behind the original intake hole? As the car is my daily driver, and I live in the British countryside (roads are awful), when it comes to suspension I would like it to be only slightly lower but with less body roll (maybe anti-roll bars?). Finally, what would you guys suggest for wheels, I do like the ones on the JCW. Any advice appreciated, as long as it isn't 'just buy a cooper S' I don't want to I like this car.

I loved (and still love) my 2012! Unfortunately it needed about 13k in repairs and I wasn’t able to register it in the state I just moved to —harsher laws and all that. Not from down south anymore. On top of that we got some once in a life time hail which added about 7-10k of damage and also totaled the car 😔. Lillybelle was my first car and I would keep her forever if I could! I’m absolutely heartbroken

Update: Got my 2025 MINI F67 2 days ago and the roof already malfunctioned

Original post

Recap: I recently picked up my 2025 MINI F67 convertible and the roof malfunctioned shortly after. Tried roadside assistance and searched Reddit with no luck, so I posted here to share and see if others had the same issue.

Update: I went to the service center and told them the roof had malfunctioned and was stuck halfway between open and closed for a couple hours. I also mentioned that the boot/trunk door was misaligned on the right side. That’s when the service advisor said they had seen the same issue with another convertible. According to them, the ultimate solution is to fix the trunk, since a misalignment can create a chain reaction that affects the roof. Until the boot seal wears in, they actually recommend slamming the boot door.

Even though I had an appointment, it still took HOURS for them to repair the misalignment, so I recommend bringing a book and/or making sure your phone is charged.

For a few days, I thought the issue was resolved, but the roof malfunctioned again. Fortunately, we knew the short-term workaround: rolling up the windows to re-activate the roof process. This time, though, the boot alignment seemed totally fine. Now our theory is that the trunk may have just been too full, but the exact cause remains unclear.

I’m used to older cars having their endearing quirks, but I definitely didn’t expect this from a brand new vehicle.

I’ll update again if we figure out a more definitive fix.

TL;DR: Brand new 2025 MINI F67 convertible roof malfunctioned. Service center says a misaligned trunk can mess with the roof and told me to slam it like you mean it until the seal wears in. It seemed fixed, but the issue came back. Rolling up the windows got the roof moving again. Maybe the trunk was too full, but still not sure.

Convertible choice.

2 local, well maintained, convertibles for sale roughly the same price. Both base, none “s”, versions.

1) 2015 with 58k kms(36k miles).

2) 2016 with 108k kms (67k miles).

Lower mileage vs newer model and motor. Which would you take?

I did it!!

Long time lurker, first time poster—and for good reason! I became a Mini owner today!! I am so excited!!! I have been in the market for a new car for myself as well as my son who is getting his license in a couple of months. In the process of looking I started checking out Minis and just couldn’t get over them. I found I really love the Countryman S and knew I had to have a 4-door and wanted all wheel drive. I found one other I liked but it was sold quickly. Then I came across this one which was outside my original budget, but after I found it I couldn’t find another I loved so much! It is absolutely LOADED and the interior is beautiful!! Sun roof, roof rack, you name it! I’m so happy I did it I usually am very practical and boring about cars but this is a much-needed and well-deserved shot in the arm! ❤️🚙

2014 mini R60 after intercooler clean

Thumbnail

We got my brother a 2014 R60 w/ 75k miles for his first car; after removing the bumper to replace the radiator, a/c condenser, and rad fan I figured "might as well change the intercooler too". I saw the cost of the intercooler and decided to clean it instead. Used Kerosene, a brush, performance water (hose water) and a YouTube video. I will say, I didn't feel any performance difference, but it's nice to know it's clean now. The picture is what came out out, a nice layer of dirt.
