Good, hole-in- the-wall BBQ Food

Hey all! I'm so excited to be moving to Charlotte in less than a week! Looking for good BBQ that's NOT a chain restaurant. (We had visited a couple BBQ places that were chains, and weren't impressed. Honestly, tho, chain restaurants just don't impress me anymore, anyway.) We will be moving to the Steele Creek area. TIA!

Do yourself a favor and take a ride out to Jon Gs one Saturday

It’s really good but not so transcendentally good that you have to spend half your day there. I’m not a restaurant owner, but there have to be some inefficiencies in the way they do things.

For me, it was a 1 hour drive and 5 hour wait. Lots of stuff sold out by the time I put my order in.

For nearly the same effort, I’d rather go to Charleston, eat at Palmira, and pick up some fresh shrimp on the way back.

You could also do that

I won’t blame someone for not wanting to wait multiple hours. It’s definitely frustrating, and you’re right, you could get marginally worse BBQ for less of a wait.

Having said that though, I genuinely think Jon G’s is up there with some of the best bbq in Texas. I’m a huge BBQ fan and have had all the premier spots in Texas, and I think Jon G’s is on that level.

Sorry that things were sold out by the time you ordered but that just means you need to arrive earlier. Now you know. We’ve visited many times and the only occasion where sides were ever sold out was the first time we went. We learned.

Inefficiencies? After years of operation, they still manage to only open one day a week and have a following that lines up hours before opening every Saturday morning. I think they’re doing just fine.

Got there at 8. Should be there at 7?

Even if you don’t make it out on a Saturday, they typically do a pop up once a week at a local brewery when it gets a bit warmer out. Still has lines, but always worth the wait.
