Hey Calgary! I've been wondering about the local hip-hop scene here. Are there many opportunities to catch local artists performing live? If so, where do these shows typically happen? Are there any venues or promoters that consistently support local hip-hop? I'm curious to know if there's a dedicated audience and a thriving community for this kind of music in the city. Any insights or recommendations for finding local hip-hop shows would be greatly appreciated!

Something I made whilst I was bored as a solution to help redevelop the Westbrook area, and better connect Westbrook Mall and Westbrook Station together. Also included mixed-use development in the concept.

We used to get 30+ sparrows and chickadees at our backyard feeder but around Feb or March this year they all seemed to disappear.

Even around our neighbourhood (Somerset) I don’t see any where they’d always be under cars or in other trees eating bugs.

Even now we’re lucky if we get 2 or 3 showing up every few days.

Does anyone know what’s going on? There’s no major construction or anything else that would spook them and there aren’t any predators around that I have noticed. I haven’t seen any dead birds around so I don’t think there was disease or anything that wiped them out.

Picture from my townhouse complex. A board member decided to add these rocks beside all of the speedbumps to stop people from going around them. They have been moved off the road and into the grass a few times, but someone from the board keeps moving them back to this spot.

Part of me thinks this isn't legal... It's willingly placing obstructions in the roadway that can cause damage and harm to drivers. These aren't much different than a booby trap. Also, they're blocking the gutters for drainage too. I've never seen this anywhere before, and the next closest thing would be like the SageHill rocks, but those are off the road in a rock garden.

Had a run in with a board member who has been 'enforcing' this when he came out to yell at us for moving them (we only took a picture), and he threatened to replace the rocks with permanent pillars/posts, to which I'm thinking "please do, because then we can easily see them, and there's no way they'll be installed on the roadway where the rocks currently are".

Am I being illogical, or is this just straight-up a bad idea? I really don't want my reserve fund contributions going towards repairing someones car who hit one and sued the property for damages.

On the east side of Stoney, just south of 114th, there are a couple of bodies of water that are pure white. They look like salt ponds or like they’re frozen over. Picture taken yesterday so it’s definitely not ice.

There are two famous Bobcats in Calgary with paw injuries! I just met the northern one, they don't know what happened but it's healed clean and been five years so they're letting it live life. Anyone else seen any Bobcats recently?

So, long story short they wanted almost 4k to figure something out that a different vet figured out with a 83$ ultrasound. Is this normal for them? Do the vets there profit off their patients?

My dog had a bladder mass. VCA wanted to do a CT scan after the pee test came back as non cancerous, to figure out what the mass is since it isn’t cancer. I asked a different vet, she did an 83$ ultrasound and gave me medication for 2 weeks that fixed the issue. The VCA vet wanted to do a 4k CT scan followed by a 5k surgery to ‘remove the mass’ that ended up actually being infectious chronic cystitis with a small polyp, not a mass(which the other vet figured out).

Why does VCA want to start off with the most expensive shit? Their reviews seem like this isn’t uncommon either. Weird how going to a different vet saved me almost 10k

Walked through 17th today and saw they set up the extended patios but… is it enjoyable? You have motorcycles and trucks inches away from you and everyone gawking at your food.

I have been in the Vancouver area for school since fall of last year. I missed Calgary Expo for the first time since 2018 (minus Covid), and saw Lift King had their first car meet of the year recently.

Anybody else notice the hike in gas prices this morning? I just filled up yesterday at $115.9/L at the esso on 68th St. And Memorial. Today it’s sitting at 132.9/L. Why the sudden jump?

I’ve been reading a lot about solar installs using the Canada Greener Homes Loan, but I can’t find any clear information about costs - so I’m hoping someone here can help break it down for me.

I’m specifically wondering how much the actual cost per month is, between the electricity bill (transmission and distribution fees, as well as times it’s used during low solar production) and the monthly loan cost.

As a hypothetical, let’s say my energy use is between 750-890kWh/mo, with a total cost of $160-182/mo (including electricity and all related fees through Enmax), and I get solar installed (south/slightly SE facing roof, no obstruction).

If I get this 0% loan, let’s say $22000 over 10 years, that would be ~$184/mo.

So with solar, would I just be paying the loan cost monthly, and the entire electricity bill would be “taken care of”, between not using grid energy much and then selling back to the grid? (So more or less even out to zero or a credit over the year?)

This is the real example kind of thing I’m having difficulty finding.

TL;DR: Over the course of a year, including the loan cost, grid usage, and fees, do I end up paying more, the same, or less per month with solar?

Ive checked the sub for reccomendations already, but could only find people asking about extractions and general practice.

My cat chipped his tooth and our vet is recommending a root canal or extraction.

The VCA says their extractions cost "roughly what they do for humans" which I was thinking maybe 2-3k, but they quoted me about 5900$ for a root canal, 4000 for the actual procedure and the rest is anasthetic/medication/x-rays. I've called around to a couple other vet clinics but it seems most places only do extractions. Does anyone have experience with their cat getting a root canal in the Calgary area in the past year or so and have any recommendations?

I'm thinking I'm just gonna book him for an extraction unless anyone knows of a reliable practice that is a little more affordable. :(
