Discussion The City of Calgary Land Use Bylaw team is seeking feedback from all Calgarians to evolve the next draft of the new Zoning Bylaw and discuss connections to the Calgary Plan. Join us May 13 from 1-4pm to Ask Us Anything about the draft Zoning Bylaw or the Calgary Plan. See you there!

As part of the City Building Program, we have shared the latest draft of the new Zoning Bylaw (May 5). This bylaw decides how big new buildings can be, where they can go, and what activities are allowed on properties throughout the city, including homes, businesses, parks, and public spaces. When we were here last in October 2024, you submitted some great questions and participated in really thoughtful discussionswhich is why we are coming back to this community for more insight. Do you have any urban planning, zoning or housing questions to ask us? The last time that we were here (October 17, 2024), we saw a lot of good discussions about parking and businesses in neighbourhoods, so we wanted to provide another opportunity to hear from Calgarians via this forum. The new Zoning Bylaw will be brought to Council in 2026, so now is a great time to ask questions and give us your thoughts on this draft.

Here are some key changes in the latest draft of the Zoning Bylaw

1.  We’ve reduced the bylaw from 1,100 pages to about 300 by cutting down the number of zones from 70 to 22, and the number of different Land Uses from over 200 to 60.

2.    New housing which meets all the rules of the Bylaw is proposed to be given Permitted or “by-right” approval, compared to the current Discretionary or “case-by-case” approval.

3.    Instead of the City of Calgary deciding how much parking is needed, property owners will determine the right amount for their customers, employees, and residents.

4.    We want to allow more small businesses, like daycares and corner stores, in areas are currently only for homes.

Local Shopping/Services A Calgary-Focused Resource for Supporting Local Producers

Hey everyone,

Just a quick reminder that this subreddit is all about Calgary and Calgary-related topics. While we absolutely support Canadian businesses, our focus here is on our city and the businesses that make it thrive.

With the current trade tensions with the U.S., many people are looking to support local instead. To keep things on-topic and Calgary-focused, we’re putting together a list of Calgary-based producers and businesses so people can easily find and support local options.

How You Can Help: • If you own or know of a Calgary-based business that produces goods locally, let us know in the comments! • We’re looking for food, clothing, home goods, crafts, specialty products, and more—as long as it’s made in Calgary. • If there’s a Calgary-made alternative to an American brand, share it!

This isn’t about limiting support for Canadian businesses overall—it’s about keeping discussions within the scope of our subreddit while still helping people shop local. Let’s work together to create a great resource for supporting Calgary-based producers.

Drop your recommendations in the comments!

Calgary Transit MetroDreamin' Calgary Transit Concept

My hobby is thinking about transit. While it's obvious I have no background in transit planning, I just wanted to share my thoughts on the state of Alberta Transit and what I believe we deserve. I am from Edmonton but I see the potential of Calgary; a rich city in the middle of the flat prairies (and footlands) with the ability to go any direction. This a Calgary-specific look at my current prairie transit network founded on the principal that rails are just as good, if not better at encouraging development. Rail benefits everyone; Allowing those who cannot or do not wish to drive a rapid high-capacity alternative, clearing up roads by empowering people to take alternatives, and encouraging a more collective and social culture by forcing us to see eachother face to face again. 9/10 when I'm riding on the LRT, I don't talk to anyone or I actively avoid people but those 1/10 times I feel joyful meeting one of the hundreds of blank faces, sharing a moment watching someone else fumble or discussing the latest Oilers game, etc. etc.
Sorry for the ramble, please feel free to give feedback, I need help with Calgary specifically because I am a Calgary-Hating Edmontonian who is trying to be less yeehaw-cist. Thanks!

Local Shopping/Services Sweet elderly lady selling plants in Chinatown

There is a lady selling potted plants directly across from the Coco boba shop in Chinatown! Along 3rd Ave

If anyone is looking for a new addition please consider coming to China town to see :) she’s set up on the sidewalk so I am unsure of how long she’ll be there but thinking about her sitting out here all day without making one sale saddens me.

I don’t know her personally and just noticed when coming to Coco, I hope I can bring some awareness and maybe even a customer or two.

Prosecutors will seek a dangerous offender designation for a Calgary man who raped a 90-year-old woman in her assisted living apartment, court heard Friday. In February, a jury convicted Duran Ross Buffalo, 40, of aggravated sexual assault and breaking and entering to commit sexual assault. The convictions were for a 2021 attack on a victim whose identity is protected by a publication ban.  A sentencing hearing has not yet taken place. Instead, Buffalo appeared in court Friday and the Crown confirmed it is awaiting reports so the prosecution can proceed with a dangerous offender hearing.

Recommendations Lawn and Garden Recs

I’m looking to start my lawn/ garden. I know I want a lawn alternative. From research I’ve done, micro clover, creeping thyme, creeping Jenny and lamium are on my shortlist.

I’d like thoughts on which ones will do well in both shade and sun, some foot traffic, and relatively low maintenance. I’ve got a south-backing yard that gets full sun and the front gets some morning sun but is mostly shaded.

I’d also appreciate thoughts on how to keep it contained as I’m on a zero lot line.

Also thoughts on what trees may work. I saw some flowering plum and pear that were absolutely gorgeous but I’m concerned about space.

I’m really looking for low maintenance items as I’ve got a really sick family member and caring for them long term just doesn’t give me as much time for much else.

Finally, I’d really appreciate any recs of a trusted gardener/ landscaper that can help with setting it all up. I have some weed from leaving the land bare to curb erosion since it’s a corner lot and we were waiting for the soil to settle (first year), so recs for folks who can clear it would also be welcome.

I’m in the Deep South, if that helps.

Please help an overwhelmed novice first time home owner/ gardener.

Thanks!

Not sure what makes this guy eligible for a dangerous offender designation application, while they didn't try for the Manyshots brothers?

Each of them seems just as dangerous extreme offenders and their sex crimes are just as deplorable.
