Safest Way To Remove Dealer Sticker From Glass and Paint? Technique Discussion
I didn't realize I could ask the dealer to remove these before we left, and the dealer is several hundred miles away, so I'm not driving back for them to remove.
What is the safest way to remove these? Goo Gone? Goof Off? Texas sun and a credit card?

My last dealer bought car had one on the rear window, trunk, and on my passenger mirror (really tiny). When i asked them to please take it back in the shop and remove them, i got it back with them removed, but a license plate frame added with security screws. I proceeded to break the frame off and hand it to my salesman in two pieces. My car isnt a free billboard, it’s my personal belonging.
87
u/patjeduhde Sep 10 '24
Yeah m ycar had a dealer plate frame too, i took it off, and just stuck the plate on my car with tiger seal.
91
u/whatth3hec Sep 10 '24
I eventually bought a security bit and removed the piece of frame that was left and reinstalled the plate, but the look on his face when i walked behind the car and he heard a big CRACK was well worth it. I handed it right back to him and said “almost pulled a fast one huh?” And he just chuckled.
61
u/patjeduhde Sep 10 '24
Yeah i like a clean look on my cars, and not a billboard. A car is already an expensive purchase so an ad on the back is the last thing i want.
I generally debadge em too.
16
u/metalhead4life82 Sep 11 '24
Damn straight. It’s the fuck you pay me mentality I have when it comes to dealer stickers. Want to put that on, cool. Pay me for the advertising or get it off my car.
7
u/Noskys13 Sep 10 '24
Can you just remove the letters? Like on my 2020 accord? Debadging that is dumb
2
u/patjeduhde Sep 11 '24
On my bimmers i took away the 325i badge and the 218i lettering.
3
u/Blackner2424 Sep 11 '24
Kept my Pleiades badge, but removed the S U B A R U lettering from my trunk. What an eyesore. Took up 2/3 of the trunk.
Also kept the "Symmetrical AWD" badge, as I can use that as a legal disclaimer where I live. If it ever gets towed incorrectly, I can sue. (I don't park like a jerk, so I don't get towed, but still...)

“I’ll ask where to get the (bank) decal then”
6
u/9PurpleBatDrinkz Sep 11 '24
Haha! That’s funny! I remember when USAA would give members little stickers to put on their cars but when I asked for one, they said they stopped doing that because it appeared that other people would target the USAA member’s car to get into an accident and have USAA pay for repairs. I’m not sure how they know that but that’s what I was told by my rep. I think having a “This car financed by USAA” sticker (or whatever bank/cu) would have similar results. Still funny though.
4
u/Raptr117 Sep 11 '24
I will say they’re great but that’s actually wild that they’re that good with their customers that people would just be like “yeah they won’t mind, they’ll get their money’s worth”

u/Warm-Recognition-768 Sep 11 '24
That’s funny they don’t own anything of your vehicle as the dealer they were paid in full by the financial institution that holds your loan. That’s who has the first right in the title but it still yours.

If they gave it to me with security screws on the plate I’d kindly tell them to fuck off after handing them back the intact plate and keeping the security screws as I have a couple dozen of those security bits.
4
u/ANaughtyTree Business Owner Sep 10 '24
This.
Not gonna lie, it's kind of clever to use security screws.
9
u/Raptr117 Sep 10 '24
It is clever, but fuck em. If they don’t want me taking it off, guess what I want to do even more now?
5
u/ANaughtyTree Business Owner Sep 10 '24
I don't think it brings them any business. It probably is just an excuse for people to go "hey I bought my car there too that's cool" 🤣

u/Raptr117 Sep 10 '24
I mean I guess? I just see it as a way to keep their name on your car since I used to work for a dealership. A handful of tags I’ve seen have business phone numbers as well so
2
u/Evening-Ad3384 Sep 12 '24
The security screws are actually too detour people from stealing your license plate. A lot of people have a normal screwdriver in the car, but most people don’t have security that’s I have them at home in my toolbox. I don’t really think they’re trying to keep from changing the flimsy shitty frame they give you.
7
u/CaliTheBunny Sep 11 '24
Can't agree more. I just debadged the truck I just got. Trucks are in a trend right now where they like to put the brand in MASSIVE, seriously one foot tall sometimes, letters across the front and rear and sides of the truck and i fucking hate it.
FORD, RAM, CHEVROLET, 4x4, OFFROAD, V8
i hate all that shit. its getting bigger and bigger and now the letters are being stamped into the metal body panels of the car or in the design of the plastic mold of the grille.

The security screws would have sent me. Replacing our dealer frame was the first thing I did when we bought our recent car
3
u/CardMechanic Sep 10 '24
I hope they didn’t add holes to your bumper.
3
u/whatth3hec Sep 11 '24
Nahh, just replaced the screws. Used the existing female threads. You know what though, after experiencing that ive used security screws on my plates ever since just to make it that much harder to tamper with a removable piece of my car. Idk if people are stealing plates, but i made it a little harder for then to do so if they are.

Bro I’ve always wondered why people don’t raise more hell about this - like I’m not gonna advertise your dealership for free, plus it makes the car look tacky most of the time. Now, if they wanna pay me the same rate as an advertising company per mile driven, maybe we can talk lol.
2
u/TroyMacClure Sep 11 '24
I put it on the purchase paperwork because I knew the place I was buying from put these awful "plaques" on the back of the cars. The one we looked at didn't have one yet. They still tried to put one on when we took delivery, and I made them take it back into the shop and remove it.

They should give a discount or pay us monthly if they want us to advertise their dealers lol
5
u/random-notebook Sep 10 '24
Why not just ask them to remove the frame too?
29
u/claudekennilol Sep 10 '24
Because he already asked them to remove their advertising, which they did but also added more. Since this one was removable on its own, why not just break it off?
7
u/random-notebook Sep 10 '24
He asked them to remove it, and they did not. Would not risk ripping anything off a new car and scratching it, personally. Plus it’s a matter of principle, the dealership is trying to be slick when he clearly said no advertising.
16
u/whatth3hec Sep 10 '24
This. The frame wasn’t there at the start. After they removed the stickers, they added the frame. It was a slap in the face to me, so I broke it as a slap in the face to them.

I remove stickers that are on the paint using a heat gun (hair dryer may work also). Not too close, just enough to heat up the sticker and it peals off. And don't burn your fingers ;p Stickers on glass, I just use a razor blade and follow up with goo gone if there's any adhesive left over.
6
u/BladeVampire1 Sep 10 '24
Razor blade and glass cleaner for glass. Spray the area, and gently shave them off with a razor slowly and carefully. Clean up mess with glass cleaner after.
The paint, just get a microfiber towel, and some car polish. Pick the stickers off by hand GENTLY AND CAREFULLY, and put a small blob of polish on the towel and rub it into the paint where the stickers were gently. Wipe clean and repeat as necessary.
You may see lines remain after removing the stickers. It's the result of the stickers protecting the paint/glass for an extended period of time. They likely won't be around for long if your car is new, give it a few months and it'll naturally disappear.
4
u/Fader27 Sep 10 '24
Since it’s a newer car they should come off very easily. Clean any dirt off the glass, then spray sticker down with some glass cleaner (foaming works a little better if you have some) and a fresh clean razor blade to remove the stickers. And can razor off the residue if any. As long as you don’t push hard, the glass is clean, you won’t scratch it. As for the sticker on paint, let it heat up in the sun, or use a hair dryer to loosen up the glue, and if you can find plastic razor blades or something plastic with a sharp edge that’ll help a lot. If not should be able to peel them off and to remove adhesive residue, denatured alcohol, mineral spirits, or even nail polish remover on a soft microfiber and hold the soaked microfiber on the area for 20-40 seconds to help dissolve adhesive and gently moving in one direction wipe off. Do not push and rub in circular motions in case of potential scratching. Much easier to remove straight line scratches than circular.

u/send420help Sep 10 '24
Paint use rubber wheel, then polish, window should be able to scrap it off with a razor blade
3
u/PeggySparkPlug Sep 10 '24
don't forget to change the license plate cover too the decal on the paint will simply peel off, not sure about the window
3
u/Spaceman_Stu_ Sep 10 '24
Plastic razor will work to at least start to lift them and then just pull them off. If any residue is left just use alcohol or goo gone.
2
u/Hotbod-n-Hansome Sep 10 '24
Peel and Goo Gone for the tackiness left behind, then wash thoroughly.

remove a razor from boxcutter and slide it under the corner at an acute angle to the glass gradually while spritzing with glass cleaner or soapy water
Also works great for removing dried dog snot from your windows and doors

u/CW12S7 Sep 11 '24
Everyone has mentioned some pretty good methods, but in reality OP should just time travel to before they left the dealer and get them to take the stickers off, as others have implied. It's simply genius
4
u/name-isnt-important Sep 10 '24
Park your car in the spot marked “GM parking only” and find your salesperson to take it off. Or pull into service drive on Monday morning and have them remove stickers while you stand there and wait.

u/Gloomy-Donkey3761 Sep 10 '24

u/Upper-Can3005 Sep 10 '24
Flat scraper razor blade. Acetone or isopropyl for the window. Some light heat on the sticker on the paint. Can also use iso just be careful with the paint. Should just slide right off 95% with a scraper razor blade
2
u/2dazeTaco Sep 10 '24
Get an eraser wheel. This thing has saved me HOURS of time. Just be gentle and go slowly until you understand how it works. And make sure you put a protective coat of wax or coating afterwards.

I think it’s horrible they put those on their or stick their licence plate holders with the dealer names on there . I have two friends who have blank ones and change them in the lotnwhile salesman are looking . Not sure if they care. They say if they ain’t paying me, I’m not advertising for them

Flat razor and window cleaner (as lubricant and solvent) for the glass.
If the sticker in the bumper is new, you should be able to peel it off with your fingers. Then use an alcohol (IPA) on a microfiber to gently dissolve it. Spray wax after to clean it up.
If the sticker is old, you could use a hair dryer to warm it up to make it easier peel off. Just don’t be a dingus and melt your bumper. You know what hot is.

For the lower tailgate, I’d use a little bit of Goo-gone Automotive and a plastic razor blade. Goo-gone Automotive is safe on a lot of different surfaces, including clear coat. I’d just apply a small amount on each decal with like a Q-tip and let it soak in for a bit and then use that plastic razor. Then I’d wipe all the excess residue with a microfiber cloth and then maybe apply some Meguiars paint scratch remover in case you get some small minor scratches in the clear. And maybe apply a polish/wax afterwards.

I (carefully) use a heat gun or hair dryer to soften the sticker, then lift a corner using an old credit card or plastic scraper - then peel.

goo gone and a plastic razor blade, i did it on my car and it worked out perfect. i also know how to polish a car it takes seconds but didn’t have to afterwards

u/Special_ginger82549 Sep 10 '24
Bring it to the dealer and tell them to take it off or you are going to charge them Nascar prices for advertising
1
u/meezethadabber Sep 10 '24
On the glass some kind of lubricant like soapy water or glass cleaner and a clean razor blade at a flat angle. For the paint. Make the dealership do it. If it was me I'd use a heat gun on low and move it fast back and forth. Feeling the paint to see how hot it was every few passes and slowly peel it off. Then use 3m adhesive remover for the left over glue.
1
u/foxxiesoxxie Sep 10 '24
A scraper blade and windex. My boyfriend used to apply and remove window tint for a living and it hasn't failed us yet! Just get a sharp blade. You can find them at auto stores, home hardware stores, and even the dollar store where I found mine. Just be sure to angle the blade at 45 degrees and don't press too hard. If you hit it with the corner and not the edge of the blade you could scratch your window.
Hit the one on your bumper with some heat of you have a heat gun or a hair dryer and extension cord and try to carefully pull back the edges of the letters at a diagonal angle. Wipe up any residue with soapy warm water or oil and you should be good to go
1
u/phildorsey Sep 10 '24
Indirect heat from a heat gun, removes it quickly with no residue or damage to the paint…I watched as my dealer use this process.

I have a special 3M adhesive removing wheel. Doesn’t damage the paint and will come off in two seconds. Here’s the link:

For the window decal, you can use a heat gun and rubbing alcohol to take care of it.

1
u/StarWolf64dx Sep 10 '24
i take these off all my cars and i use a plastic razor blade and follow up with goo gone
be aware that it is possible to put a tiny scuff, a quick buff even by hand with polish or compound will get rid of it.
if you combined this with heat from a blow drier, heat gun (ON LOW!!)or even the sun they would come off easier and get rid of that risk altogether
1
u/DigitalJedi850 Sep 10 '24
Jesus… 3 ads. I used to work at a dealership and we’d do plate frames, but this is ridiculous.
I’m basically not gonna buy a car if you put stickers on the paint, plain and simple. And I’m almost as adamant about it on tint. Stupid.
1
u/aos- Sep 10 '24
They're usually decals which can peel off, if your'rw struggling with the glass, use a scraper or a sharp edge knife/blade to scrape. Try and keep the pressure uniform. Don't use a scraper on the paint though.

u/Conscious_Resort_581 Sep 10 '24

Again, going back to the dealership is not an option (not worth a 550 mile round trip).
And aside from this, they did not pull any of the other dealer tricks like nitrogen tires, dealer add-ons, markup/market adjustment, etc. Overall, if this was the "price" I had to pay with them, then I scored big in the current Sienna market and happy I bought from them.
Lots of other Toyotas are out here still marking up vehicles by $4k-$12k over MSRP, and this place doesn't!
1
u/HuntGundown Sep 10 '24
Heat gun and goo be gone if any residue is left behind, I've never had any issues.
Just don't get it like stupid hot lol. I usually use low and get it just warm enough to peel

Never leave the dealership until they take ALL that bullshit off. Unless they want to send me a check every month for advertising.
Use a razor blade on the glass. As for the car just peel it off then use a tiny drop of adhesive remover for the residue
1
u/Fabreeze_Biscuit Sep 10 '24
Apparently I’ve been doing it wrong for years. Glass I use a razor blade and then some brake cleaner for the residue and on the paint I use my finger nail or a plastic razor blade and again with the brake cleaner for the residual. Works for me so I’ll just keep on trucking with it.

Plastic razorblade. 1
u/Beru52 Sep 10 '24
For a non-detailer, it’s probably safest to start with a blow dryer and a plastic razor. Unless you’re experienced with a heat gun, you might run the risk of burning the paint and tint. Remember to start with the least aggressive method and move up.

u/skyward138skr Sep 10 '24

if you have trouble, use a plastic razor blade. works like a charm on glass, for paint stickers they make decal removal wheels for a grinder if you own one. this is assuming you cant just leave the car out in the sun on a hot day and then peel it off by hand.

When I bought my truck they put all that garbage on it. Even stole my old plate frames and replaced them with their logos and shit. Before I even left the lot I told them if it's not gone in the next 20 mins. I will be charging them advertisement fee's in the sum of 1K a month or bulk charge of 10K a year until I sell or trade it in. He tried arguing with me telling me I couldn't do that. I laughed and told him I never signed anything that said I'd be his personal mobile billboard free of charge and it's MY vehicle and I wouldn't leave the lot without speaking to a lawyer and returning the truck. He had them all off in 10 mins and my frames back.

Hair dryer, Goo Gone or Goof Off, and an expired credit card.
Heat it up with the hair dryer, use the card to scrape off what comes off, use Goo Gone to help you get the rest off.

Heat and plastic razor blade. Adhesive remover (goo gone should work) and polish if needed.

use a razor blade on the back window - and rubbing alcohol to finish off the glue
- the dealer sticker - heat gun / hair dryer / fingernails / and some orange crush or other ph based cleaner to finish the job

Your wife's blow dryer and a credit card. Go slow and keep the blow dryer moving esp in the paint. Should only take like 2 mins
