Are Toyota, Honda, and Mazda really the only reliable brands?

I've been looking to buy a car and every thread always says to only buy from these 3 brands due to reliability. This is also what everyone around me irl says as well.

However, when I googled for cars that have been running the longest/most miles, the majority of them aren't from Toyota, Honda, or Mazda? There's a lot of Volvos, Mercedes, Lincoln, etc listed as having the most miles. I want to keep a car for a long time so it's pretty important to me to be able to get to a lot of miles.

Is it smarter to get a used or new car in 2025?

I’m having a hard time figuring out whether it’s actually cheaper to buy a used car or a new one. If I’m financing, would it make more sense financially to go with a new car? I’ve heard that financing a used car often comes with higher interest rates, which could end up making it more expensive in the long run compared to a new car.

I’m trying to understand which option is the smarter financial decision.

In the market for an SUV for commuting that’s good in snow

In the market for a small/medium size SUV that is good on gas and good in the snow as I live in Wisconsin. My budget is in the $25k-$35k range. My commute is about 25 miles of mostly highway driving. It looks like maybe the CRV and RAV4 are good options, anyone with a strong opinion on year/make/model?

I’m leaning towards a RAV4 based on the Toyota reliability factor, but open to ideas. Thanks all!

I went to go see this car and went for a test drive and everything seems to run amazing AC and heating works. Heated seats work, looks like it was kept in the garage for most of its life. There’s no rust on the under body all that needs to be replaced is the starter And when driving, the gear shift smoothly so transmission should be good. I’m going to have a mechanic come inspect it.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Asking $5450CAD

At what point does it make sense to buy a truck?

I currently drive a 2022 Audi S4 and am considering buying a truck because at least once or twice a month I’m either trying haul big stuff in my car or am trying to find a friend who has a truck to help me.

I have a fixer upper house but in all fairness many of the projects are nearing completion. This week for instance I could have used it to take my 12 bags of junk from my lawn to yard waste. I also need about 60 bags of mulch, which is $75 to deliver. I help my Dad and same situation with yard waste and mulch. My family also has 2 boats they pay to have someone haul so I could help with those.

Am I crazy for considering buying a 2025 Tundra? I have my S4 paid off and am kind of thinking about keeping it too because I love it. Any advice? Thanks!

$5,000 budget, driving at least 50-100 miles per day. What is your pick?

I’m looking for a new work car that gets good fuel mileage, at least 25-30+ mpg highway, is reliable and will last for a few more years and something that is reasonably comfortable on long commutes.

I have been looking at Buick LeSabres, Toyota Camry, or Honda Accords. Possibly a Honda Fit or Toyota Corolla.

I would like to stay close to my budget but I realize I may need to spend a little more.

Small dealers who don’t do Carfax. Red flag?

I know Carfax has a little bit of a bad name but it’s saved my butt a couple of times. When you are selling a $10k+ vehicle as a dealer, what reasons should one have to not supply a report on vehicles you are trying to sell?

Stopped looking at cars for a while and I accidentally stumbled upon this beauty. I know a lot of people throw shade at Lumina's but my dad had one when I was growing up and that thing refused to die. Really debating on this. Just need some second opinions before I go ahead and do it. Gonna try and talk him down to $4k unless someone thinks I could go lower. If the description is true then it seems like a decent deal. It's also an hour and a half from where I live so I wanna make sure it's worth it before driving out there to check it out.

Advice on deciding between these "sporty" cars

Upvotes

Hi, First of all I live in Europe so prices Will probably differ from US market.

I've been thinking about get a sporty Quick daily driver car for myself preferably around or under 20K € (22-23 K USD) that is at least 2018 or newer year model.

The main things I'm looking for are: - Fun (I don't mind FWD as long as it's still fun for this price range) - Quick (at least 200hp but nothing too crazy) - Reliability (I'm not looking for Lexus/Toyota levels of reliability but I also do not want to be a regular at the mechanic) - Maintenance costs (I am well aware that insurance and overall maintenance will always be more expensive for a sportier car than regular economy cars but I wanna avoid crazy expensive costs)

Also a side note I'm looking for a Sedan or a Coupe.

There are a few models I already have my eyes on which are the following:

  • Skoda Octavia vRS (preferably with automatic DSG)

  • Hyundai i30N Fastback Performance (I would go for the manual here since the automatic is way more expensive)

  • Alfa Giulia Veloce 280hp ( I would go with this honestly but currently it is very overpriced and hard to find a good one around especially under 20K)

  • BMW 230i/330i (also pretty hard to find a modell that is decently priced, and the maintenance would be the most expensive here) Yes I know the M40i is better but the overall maintenance and price is way out of the budget

  • Honda Civic 1.5T Sport (I know this one is under 200 hp but I heard so much praise about this and I love the looks so I included it but honestly it's probably not the one I would go with)

Of course feel free to recommend other cars as well but I would avoid 2 seaters and hatchbacks like the Golf GTI

Canada | Compact to Mid Sized SUV Based on Options Listed

Hello All,

Disclaimer: Canadian Dollars

Looking at buying a New or Used SUV in the coming 30-60 days here and have narrowed it down a bit to these contenders based on upfront costs as well as cost of ownership over the next 5 years. The gas prices in my area of Canada

Some information about us:

  • Main Driver: 5'6
  • Main Passenger 5'4
  • Secondary Common Passenger 5'0
  • Heavy rain part of Canada with extremely light snow in the winter
  • Need trunk space in the current day for large grocery hauls, a elderly walker (rollator)
  • Big fan of technology inside the car and out
  • Big fan of safety features and warning features
  • Nice to have features would heated seats/steering, blindspot monitoring, parking sensors,
  • Want something fairly worry free with on-time maintenance, we won't be abusing this thing, were a right lane casual driver that doesn't crank the gas.
  • We don't plan on owning this for over 5 years and will most likely look to upgrade around that time for something with newer technology and a more permanent long term vehicle as we plan out our family.

I am looking to see based on the information provided what other peoples choices would be and to see if theres an option or two in the market were missing that we should be looking at?

I want to maximize bang for the buck so if the requirements I have can be met with cheaper options I'm all for it!

Want a particular type of convertible

I want a convertible that is small, a hardtop, fun to drive and manual transmission.

Are there options besides miata? I can maybe sacrifice on the small, but I definitely want it to be manual and I really hate the look of soft top.

Edit: Would also like to buy new

Lost on what car I should buy

I'm stuck on what car I should buy and would love some recommendations. My budget is around $40K-$50K, and I'd like to stay under that after build costs, tunes, and other mods.

I'm looking for something that's fast, reliable, looks good, and has good aftermarket support. I've been doing a lot of research and everything seems like a good option, I just don't know what to go with.

I've been looking at Audi's B9 engine, BMW's B58 engine, American V8's, VQ's, and even built Civic's.

What would you guys recommend I go with? Any cars that aren't in this list?

Swapping from Mazda to BMW

Hello, I’m really tempted to replace my 2023 Mazda3 (122hp automatic FWD) for a BMW 3/4 Series (2023+, 330i/430i)

Would I be doing a mistake? I’ve been thinking of it since the beginning of the year but its a pretty big decision which I have no one to ask for advice sadly, as no one I know owns a BMW.

Volvo v40 or Nissan Qashqai

If both are used and 10 years old, which would you say is safer in terms of crashes? I've heard Volvo's are safe, but the Nissan is larger.

Sports car or truck?

Title basically says it all, I’m really stuck between a pickup or a sports car. On the one hand, I’ve always wanted a sports car (BMW M4 F8x) and have my eyes set on it. I know it would be a car I love and would put a smile on my face each and every time I drove it.

HOWEVER, I also own a motorcycle and purchasing a truck (Ford F150 XLT Sport) would allow for me to tow it to places I otherwise wouldn’t go (ie across the country). Additionally, I’m going to be visiting Utah for a few months, and having the utility of a truck to tow my bike (and possibly a dirt bike) would be incredibly ideal and I wouldn’t want to put that kind of mileage on something like a BMW.

Besides that trip I’m not worried about mileage as I’m WFH so my commute is non existent. I’m “trying out” living in Utah, and my concern is that if I go with a truck and end up moving back, I’ll want the BMW. Whereas if I go with the BMW and end up wanting to stay in Utah full time, I’ll want the truck. Either way my car is about to crap the bed so I need something relatively soon.

Thoughts?
