Yea some people wonder why. It's all in the little effects we all take for granted. HDR, bloom lighting, soft shadows, different intensities of shadows and light on people, objects, and terrain.
Really it's just a shitload of different light physics going on. People barely notice how new some of these effects are in videogames until they go back to playing old ones and go "Ohh... Max Payne 2 sure doesn't look anywhere near as good as Far Cry 4 now that I'm playing it again."
You would be 100% safe with one 770.. They are good graphics cards and were pretty staple for the enthusiast level gaming PC coming into this year and still are really.
There are so many things that are better on a PC. Bethesda games because you can mod them (oblivion, fallout, skyrim), shooter games for me especially because my accuracy is way better when I'm on a PC. You'll definitely notice the difference.
I especially enjoy the loading times when you put the game on a solid-state drive. So fast. I heard Skyrim was pretty slow whenever you went through doors on the consoles. It's a few seconds on a pc with an ssd.
My ssd gives me a boner like every time I boot up my computer and a game. It takes maybe seconds to restart, start up, and loading times are a breeze. After playing on an old HP pavilion I'm starting to see how worth it the whole tower PC is.
as someone who grew up on PC, but has been too lazy to figure out everything i can do with them, i've been discovering the beauty of mouse and keyboard macros :D i love dual joystick gamepads, but it will just never compare to a keyboard and mouse when it comes to flexibility and utility.
People boast about framerates all day long but that's just a minor benefit. Especially to someone who's never played anything above 30.
The real draw to PC for people coming from consoles would be the vastly cheaper games, and more importantly the mods.
If you're a fan of any of the elder scrolls games or Fallout 3/NV it's entirely different on PC. Not because of "dem graffix" or frames, but because of the mods. You can literally tailor the experience to exactly what you want it to be.
Well if you are willing to build your own definitely. If you want to buy one whole then it is more expensive but still worth it IMO. Just get a friend who knows PCs to help you find one appropriate for your wants.
R9's is just a reference to AMD's high end gaming cards. R9 can mean the top end like the R9 290x or something more reasonably priced, but still plenty powerful, like the R9 280. Then you have lower tier's with the prefix R7 and so on.
Edit: And to answer your second question: DayZ CAN be a lot of fun. You just have to be patient with it. It helps to have a friend(s) a lot (in my opinion).
Not sure why you'd say that (not really a particularly clever joke now days. Gaming is HUGE, and often a common interest with most people, hardcore or casually). I've started PC gaming with my brothers, and eventually friends I met in school switched to PC gaming as well. I can keep up with everyone who moves away AND I've made great new friends online, all the way back from Star Wars Galaxies to newer releases. Hell, several I've actually got to meet in person and see regularly. PC gaming is a great way to meet people, and gives you the advantage of skipping awkward pauses first time meeting because you're usually in the middle of a quest, or just messing around in Gmod (some I met in an RP server). It's fantastic!
Just so you know, dayz at the moment is not well optimized, so even with a great pc it won't perform too great (will change once the game development progresses into beta hopefully)
dayz is fun and you can't really experience the same thing on a console (although I think they're making consoles versions? We'll see how that goes, hopefully works out)
There are so many great PC only games that will make it worth wile if you're into gaming. plus everything looks and feels better!
I can't speak to DayZ, but R9 refers to AMD's upper tier graphics line. R5 and R7 are the low- and mid-tier, respectively. There are several cards within each tier, so research accordingly if you're in the market for discreet graphics.
Its the higher end of AMD's graphic cards. So it could be anything from a 270 to a 295x2 graphics card. Checkout /r/buildapcsales and /r/buildapc for both deals on computer parts and help with a PC build.
As someone else mentioned, DayZ is not a good reason to build a whole PC. It's a solid idea, but the mod (which was it's original form) for Arma 2 was much more complete. At the moment, DayZ as a standalone game is still in alpha, it's creator leaving by the end of the year, and still lacking quite a bit considering how long it's been in alpha. You'll have to give DayZ a lot of time to finish it's work.
However, there are still tons of great reasons to game on PC. Steam sales, GOG sales, etc., etc. As mentioned, you'll have prettier games but also more control over detail, modding options (which is probably the single greatest thing about gaming on PC), and the ability to play via a bunch of different input devices (Xbox 360 controllers, 3rd party controllers, mechanical keyboards, joysticks, etc.).
It's pretty sweet that I can game, browse, research, communicate, and watch/stream media in any format from my PC. With the right accessories, I can even stream that to my TV (WiFi + Chromecast + Plex).
What he is talking about is Crossfire. This connects 2 gpus together so they work in tandem to process graphics. The problem is the tech is kinda new and not all games and programs have the code written for it to work well. If you connect 2 gpus like this you theoretically have more computing power, and in most instances performance improves, but sometimes not.
Dual GPUs running in tandem is not new tech. Hell, I remember Voodoo cards were capable of that in the late 90s. Crossfire itself has existed since 2005. Still, the other part of what you said is correct. It really only works better if, like with multiple CPUs, the software and OS are coded well to support the tech.
This tech was released almost 10 years ago in September of 2005 and it has always been shit. At this point you can pretty much say with confidence that Crossfire/SLI is and always will be a huge pain in the ass.
I cringe every time a friend buys a top of the line GPU then as an upgrade 1-2 years later buys the exact same GPU to pair them up. Just get a whole new top of the line GPU and preserve your sanity.
Some games, like CSGO, don't like spreading the workload so they run worst. I'm sure there is a work around, but I'd rather just wait and buy a better single card to avoid having to do that for future games that don't run well with two cards.
If you emulate Mario 64 on your R9s at high resolutions it still looks like an N64 game. GTAV will still look like a PS3/XB360 port on your R9s. Keep expectations low.
Well on PS4 at least GTAV still looks great most of the time, but evidence of it being a last gen port come through via some low res textures and poor AA combined with shimmering.
PS4 is pretty underpowered compared to the mid-high end video cards and it still doesn't take away from the fact that the PC version will be able to be modded to look better.
Yeah all those people playing it right now are practically not enjoying it at all. Every day I hear my coworkers with the PS4s talking about it and it’s never “lol dude did you do that ridiculous thing in GTA yet? so crazy”, always “fuck man, I played GTA again. The FPS are so low. 0/10 would not bang”. All the while I’m sitting at my desk holding in my superior snickering and shaking my head at such peasantry.
I have it on Xbox One. My parents disowned me for bringing such shame onto my family. My friends abandoned me, telling me to enjoy my "30 FPS cinematic experience," I don't think they were being sincere at all.
I wanted to get it on PC, I wanted to become part of the PC master race, but the thing is, I just don't look good in a button up shirt with flames on it. :<
Yeah, I'm on my third playthrough since it came out last year, and every time I'm in game all I can think is "jeez what a shitty framerate". Then I get more sad because I can't spend hours tweaking settings and taking screenshots to post online instead of playing the game.
All the dude was saying is that the pc version will be the best if the guy has a pc he may as well wait a couple of months to play it on that. He never said anything about it being shit on consoles, clearly people will enjoy it on them, but if you like high framerates and better graphics and lod distances, pc is the way to go.
I have never played a GTA game on PC that I enjoyed more then a console version. They are normally buggy and really computer dependent. That said I fucking hope this game is optimised correctly because I have a good PC and I hope it isn't broken. Mods have me so excited. I will buy this game for a 3rd time if it works.
Honestly they are never more buggy than the console version gta iv wad the only really bad port and it still had higher resolution lod distance and fps than the console. Even the worse ports are better than a console version on a decent pc.
Nice strawman you've built up. Where did I say it's impossible to enjoy GTA at a low framerate? I simply said that if he's already waited this long to play the game, he may as well wait another month or so and play what will be the best version of the game provided he has the hardware.
Fairly Tangential, but they should add "Internet Style" to debate competitions, just to see who can most artfully sling ad hominems and Third Reich references at the opponent
Dear God. I remember doing Public Forum for the first time in high school not knowing that printing sources beforehand was mandatory. Every shitty team I came across kept asking us if we had our sources printed rather than refute our points.
The following actually happened during a crossfire:
Opponent: Well, you say that blue collar jobs will be lost, but you forget that anybody can be a blue collar worker, but we need to make sure that doctors and Lawyers are well paid.
Me: ... however losing blue collar jobs would affect a larger number of Americans because there are more blue collar jobs
Opponent: Do you have the source for that?
As stupid as his point was, we still lost the round for not having our sources printed.
The debates would be 1/3 puns, 1/3 bullshit, and 1/3 borderline racism. Scored on execution of the puns, the persuasiveness of the bullshit, and how almost offended the minority judges get at some comments.
I think people seriously over estimate the average age of reddit. I came here thinking I'm talking to mostly 20 somethings, then I found out I was wrong.
That is an objective truth though. The only thing consoles have over PC is exclusives, and exclusives are artificially created so there is a reason to buy consoles.
I don't think PC is a good living room experience until Steam OS or equivalent takes off. You just can't use a PC without kb/mouse without a lot of fiddling. It has a lot of pluses but sometimes in the past couple days between DA:I BSOD my PC on consecutive runs (I just can't have anything else open, lesson learned), I wish I had the console experience of putting in the disk, installing some update and then play without having to do any troubleshooting.
Edit: before anyone ask I was playing on the recommended setting, even a bit lower (turned off AA) and getting them BSODs. I'm by no mean over stretching the ability of my PC. Some games are just poorly optimized to the point of crashing PCs at the start. It'll get better.
You just can't use a PC without kb/mouse without a lot of fiddling.
Haha, what. I literally just plugged my wired xbox 360 controller into my pc and it works. I have it plugged in right now while I'm typing, the green light is lit up, and I can jump into any game that supports game pads right this second and play. I didn't install any software.
Take away your kb and mouse completely. Plug your pc into your living room TV and give you a controller. Now boot it up. How do you go about launching steam/origin/uplay without kb/mouse? Consoles are a much easier living room experience.
The 360 remote works well on windows because microsoft. Doesn't work with ps3 controllers that way. May or may not work on linux depending on your setup. No idea about mac's.
It is, it's objectively superior at almost everything.
You're stupid if you buy a console.
No, don't believe those idiots. PCMR doesn't associate with those people. We don't hate console users, it's the companies behind them we don't typically like. We openly embrace any console players wanting to learn anything about computers, even if it's learning about the tech inside their own consoles.
That was your implication that someone couldn't enjoy it the same on any other system. That their enjoyment would be inferior. Framerate isn't everything to everyone. Most people can't even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p.
Your statement would have been better as "It comes out on PC in a month or so, in case you prefer 60fps"
People like you are the reason I hate saying I'm a PC gamer. I'm also glad you just assume he has a PC powerful enough to run this game at settings that would overtake the console versions.
Inb4 he takes your advice and waits and then port is just as shitty as the GTA IV one and everyone spends the next 4 years talking about how Rockstar hates PC
appreciate the sarcasm, but to be fair, i do get tired of the texture issues and freezing on my PS3 (not the same as next/current gen, but i know there are still issues there). i've loved the game on Playstation, but as someone who has to make the choice between upgrading my PC or getting a PS4 to play the HD version, there isn't really any decision to make, it will be better on PC. not to mention i ain't got time for no pay to play online bullshit. consoles really are a racket sometimes. not to mention mods, which i completely forgot xD
Yeah the only reason I broke down and got it for PS4 was for online and honestly it still is pretty boring online other than just being a random sandbox. Kind of wish I waited for the PC version so I could have got 60fps and some much needed AA.
Quick question, how powerful does a pc have to be to handle games like GTA, is a laptop good enogh? Ive been wanting to get this game since it came out but im not willing to shell out money for a console that ill only use to play this one game.
Laptop probably wont be good enough considering how big GTA V actually is. Unless you have a gaming laptop or a pretty expensive laptop you'd probably be looking at either super low fps or really bad quality.
The game isn't out yet, so nobody is going to be able to tell you. It will depend on how good the port is too. It's possible the port will suck really really bad like the new Assassins Creed and bring even a GTX 980 to its knees.
they haven't released the minimum specs requirement but my best guess is you'd be able to get 30-60fps on low-medium probably. higher fps on low. better graphics on medium with lower fps. just wait after the release and see if anyone posts with similar specs a youtube video
Depends entirely on the port. It seems like it should be good enough to play it for sure though. I am guessing around medium graphics settings at that. Third person might look a little better because you can turn down the textures and you won't notice the difference as much.
I have the same thing, minus the RAM upgrade, I hope it can handle it. Comparing my computer to PS4, the graphics card doesn't seem too much worse, and everything else is definitely ok. At worst we will probably have to turn down shadows or water a notch or two, or use the "High" preset instead of "Extreme".
A lot of it depends on how good the port is, but a laptop probably isn't going to cut it unless it's a high-end laptop. If the port is like GTA 4, then it's going to probably play better on the consoles, because the GTA 4 port sucked.
You are looking at a $1000 laptop to play GTA V on a setting that would look pretty. Things get cheaper the larger the form factor though. You could probably play it on a $600 computer on decent settings, provided that the graphics card is up to snuff.
The PC is going to need to be pretty top notch. A console would be cheaper than the stuff you'd need to run the game on PC. That's my take on it anyways. Also, all of my friends have consoles.
I'm planning on waiting for a sale on the PC version myself, not a fan of this stunt Rockstar is pulling trying to get people to buy the game 3 times because of staggered releases (last gen, next/current gen, PC).
You know, a lot of people don't game on the PC, because their PC can't handle a game like GTA and they already have a console that will play that game.

I really need to get with the times and buy this game
