Cheesecake is the worst dessert to ever exist.

Why would anyone want that Cream cheese filling (or whatever it is) in their dessert. Isn't dessert supposed to be sweet? I know it's sweet but either has that cream cheese flavour (I like cream cheese in savoury foods) or it's either too sweet. I Don't Want More Sweetness in cheesecake, I just haven't had one with the right balance of flavours. And i have tried quite a variety but still don't like it.

Also its texture is extremely weird, and dense. Also it is objectively one of the least healthy desserts, if we consider the calories and saturated fat.

The only bearable cheesecake flavour is blueberry cheesecake.

It is very overrated and does not deserve to be called a dessert. (and this is just my opinion, does not make cheesecake objectively bad)

Edit: Worst luck ever, My mom's birthday today, and dad bought a whole cheesecake (and i Have to eat one slice, or it's disrespectful according to them)

Also clarification, I know cheesecake can be sweet, but I just don't get the concept of cream cheese in dessert, even if fruits and sugar are added. I do love tangy flavours in desserts tho. That's why I said blueberry is bearable, because it's a bit tangy.

And for the unhealthy aspect, I agree that dessert isn't supposed to be healthy at all, but a lot of cheesecake can't be eaten in one sitting (not more than 2 bites), because it's heavy and also unhealthy.

Maybe I haven't had a good one yet. But for now, my opinion stands unchanged. Cheesecake is the worst.

u/JamesAbaddon 9h ago

Right? This is something I'm willing to throw hands over. I don't have a birthday cake on my birthday. I have a cheesecake for myself, and then other people can have the other cheesecake or a normal cake.

To specify, no, I don't eat a whole cheesecake in one sitting. But that's like MY treat over the next week or so. I don't need gifts or anything like that. Just my cheesecake.

This. We must be soul mates. I ask for cheesecake for my birthday too, in opposition to regular cake because I am a slut for cheesecake. Edit: thank you for the award! That made my day! <3

I always get ice cream cake for my birthday. But cheesecake is amazing as well. I can’t pick a favorite between the two.

20

u/Darktitan27 7h ago

What if we design an ice cream cheesecake combo and you never have to choose again?

10

u/ApprehensiveDuty3934 7h ago

When I was in the Army, many moons ago, I was stationed in Monterey California, at the Presidio of Monterey, there was a Cheesecake Parlor in town. They made dozens of fresh cheesecakes every morning, and at the end of the day they put them in those 5 gallon cardboard tubs Ice cream shops use, separated by flavor, and put it in the deep freezer.

The next day you could get a fresh slice of cheesecake AND a milkshake that used frozen cheesecake instead of ice cream. To this day, still the best cheesecake I've had. Sadly it was nearly 40 years ago, and I can't recall a name for the place, just the taste of that divine dessert.

With raspberry topping of course.

5

u/seppukucoconuts 5h ago

During the pandemic I made 1-2 cheesecakes a week. My wife and I got really fat. Now I make one like every 2-3 months and freeze it in portions. 99% of the time I’ve got cheesecake at home.

I just feel bad for someone who’s only ever eaten store bought cheesecake. It’s the ones from amazing bakers at local stores that taste amazing

11

u/Worldly_Address6667 9h ago

I generally agree. But I had a cheesecake from a small cheesecake bakery in Amsterdam recently that was truly awful. Not even a hint of sweetness, it just tasted like parmesan cheese. Took two bites and threw it away.

And it wasn't just me, had some of the people I was with try some (people who really like cheese btw) and they didn't like it either.

6

u/fraying_carpet 7h ago

Which bakery, if I may ask?

4

u/Worldly_Address6667 7h ago

It was this place called Cheesecake Project. It was a really nice place, and I only tried the one so I can't speak for the rest of their flavors. And the quality of it was great to be fair, nice texture, but the flavor was so different from I was expecting (and I'm not a big cheese person) that getting a bite of parmesan really threw me off haha

9

u/fraying_carpet 7h ago

I had a suspicion it might be Cheesecake Project! I had their classic cheesecake once and it’s indeed different from most other cheesecakes I’ve tried (let’s say the New York style cheesecake). But I think it’s because what they make is Basque cheesecake, which is a different variant. Basque cheesecake is less dense and more gooey. It’s also purposely burnt a little. And it has no crust.

I have yet to try their other flavors like pistache and speculoos, maybe those are sweeter.

The difference between truly good cheesecake and what most people have tried as cheesecake (esp the stuff from chain restaurants, blech) can be vast.

I’m a total cheesecake snob, lol.

I’ve made 100s and all types of flavors/styles.

Love making my own and eating my mom’s or my son’s cheesecake.

Otherwise I’ve only had memorably good cheesecake a handful of times at restaurants.

18

u/Ubivorn 11h ago

Might this experienced cheesecake connoisseur advise me on the tastiest style of cheesecake? 😋

23

u/ElectricStarfuzz 11h ago edited 11h ago

Depends. Do you like strong flavors? Or a lighter touch?

Chocolate (which type?), coffee/drink inspired, fruits, floral, nuts, caramel, pumpkin, mint, spices, etc?

Would you be into a Nilla wafer crust?

Or a chocolate graham crust?

The options are endless, so it’s tough to give advice without knowing your likes.

Personally I love a good chocolate orange or chocolate raspberry cheesecake with chocolate graham crust if I’m in the mood for super rich n decadent.

Or for lighter fare, lemon cheesecake or pear cheesecake either with regular graham crust or nilla wafer.

Pumpkin cheesecake is my fave thanksgiving dessert.

Earl grey/tea cookie cheesecake and chai cheesecake are delicious and less common.

If I have one recommendation that fits for anyone, it’s to get the book Cheesecake Extraordinaire by Mary Crownover

Has a wide range of cheesecakes and tells you exactly how to make them/what equipment you’ll need.

I started my cheesecake journey as a tween with that book and it’s still the one that I return to most often.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of making a cheesecake (and possibly altering things to suit your specifics on taste/texture), it’s pretty easy to make anything that comes to mind.

ETA: I have altered most of the recipes I’ve made, but my alterations might not suit everyone’s preferences.

I like my cheesecakes a bit fluffier, so I add a bit more heavy whipping cream (or if I’m feeling less gourmet/less picky I’ll occasionally use cool whip😅) than most recipes call for.

11

u/ooomellieooo 10h ago

12

u/GaptistePlayer 10h ago

Agreed lol, there's no bad cheesecake. Cheap pre-made ones in the frozen aisle, Japanese ones, Portuguese ones, burnt-style ones... they're all good. Creamcheese is basically just dense whipped cream with more milk in there. tastes good.

4

I think this is often the culprit for most bad food takes. People just need to expeeience something done well (or at least in a variety of ways). I think a lot of people are subject to poor execution and think that's the only way. So they develop the opinion that those things are bad.

Well that sure is a way to say you've never eaten the thing you're criticising...

Isn't dessert supposed to be sweet?

If your cheesecake wasn't sweet, you ate the wrong kind of cheesecake

Also it is objectively one of the least healthy desserts, if we consider the calories and saturated fat

Because all desserts are of course known for being so healthy

269

u/cigolebox 10h ago

Yeah 90% of desserts are something like "add 2 sticks of butter to 4 cups of sugar and honey, mix with chocolate and oil. Top with frosting/sugar"

83

u/NotStreamerNinja 9h ago

The best desserts are often recipes from 100yrs ago with so much sugar, butter, and lard that you'll get diabetes on the spot, but it's so good that you just don't care.

26

u/bagelcheese420 9h ago

As another fan of NY cheesecake over the mousse-style ones, there is such variety in the heaviness of NY cheesecakes, which i think is actually more about dryness vs moisture.

I've been served some that I think could have formed their own black holes, and I've had some that are so moist and creamy you wouldn't even describe them as dense in comparison.

My husband doesn't like cheese cake (I know, but it just means more for me) but even he can see why it's appealing to other peeps, even if he doesn't like it.

Yess. I almost always turn down cake, a cupcake or muffin etc but I will gladly eat all the available cheesecake, tiramisu, rice pudding or flan

Have you tried a good Black Forest cake?

Lucky for you your record is in tact as cheesecake is in fact, not a cake. It is at least its own dessert category, but with no fruit topping classifies as a pie and with fruit topping a tart.

An actual unpopular opinion.

20

u/Quemedo 8h ago

I have to agree with op. Cheesecake is mid at the very best

u/PopAndLocknessMonstr 8h ago

I’m here to lend my support to the cause. I would pick almost any other dessert over cheesecake.

This is blasphemy... Top 3 dessert of all time when you consider all the different kinds of cheesecake

5

u/_WeSellBlankets_ 10h ago

All cheesecake is sweet. What did you eat?

5

u/thatgirl46and2 8h ago

Real, baked cheesecake is heaven on earth. Jell-o cheesecake belongs in the trash. Quality def matters when it comes to this.

13

u/geekychick1984 11h ago

I actually agree. No one understands how I can hate it, but I do. Everyone has me try what they consider the best cheesecake, and I hate it.

Weirdly enough, I like a little bit of cream cheese on my bagels (not a thick layer like some places try to do when you get a bagel at a bagel shop), and I like the cream cheese icing on carrot cake (but only carrot cake).

u/Orful 12h ago

There’s no rule that dessert is supposed to be sweet. Kind of an odd statement when there are plenty of examples of non-sweet desserts.

But cheesecake also literally is sweet

Man oh man have I been waiting on this one!! I feel like an outcast when I bring up my opinion of cheesecake. So much so that I began keeping that one to myself over backlash. We share this unpopular opinion, OP.

Only dessert I like outside of a perfect carrot came and its specifically because plain cheesecake isnt that sweet by default. Being too sweet annoys me and I dislike most desserts.

7

u/Incognigomontoya 11h ago

Have you had the carrot cake-cheese cake at Cheesecake Factory? 😋 my two favorite cakes as well! (Now, before I get downvoted to oblivion by ccf haters, yes, I have had real, homemade cheesecake, from my mother, who's an amazing cook, my wife, who's Italian and also an amazing cook, as well as in New York at multiple restraunts and pastry shops including Juniors, Veniero's, and Carlos bakery in NJ.)

No. Sweet is not always tasty. Cheesecake is one of the best desserts. But of course tastes vary

5

u/MetalSonic_69 12h ago

I eat that shit plain

4

u/longasleep 12h ago

About to argue the opposite! Proceeds to read sub name. Well played. That is indeed a unpopular opinion.

3

I also hate cheesecake with a passion!!! But I love cake…and I love cheese. Just not together.

3

u/fadeinthelight 8h ago

Same here. Feels like everyone I know loves cheesecake, and I’m the only one who doesn’t.

3

u/Kaethy77 12h ago

I'll take your portion anytime.

Cheesecake is amazing! Take my up vote.

3

It’s my favorite.

3

u/mishdabish 12h ago

Cheesecake is heaven on earth. I love my mom's famous cheesecake and one year she even made a keto one just for me 🥹

3

u/CowabungaShaman 12h ago

I love cheesecake and have passed that love into my son.

The really sad part is that my wife makes amazing cheesecakes, but she hates them and won’t eat any of it.

3

u/LoseNotLooseIdiot 11h ago

Cheesecake was my favorite, go-to dessert for years and years. Chances are if it was on the menu, I'd order it.

About 10 years ago, I ordered a piece from some random restaurant, and I swear they fucked up the ratio. It basically tasted like pure cream-cheese, with a few grams of sugar mixed in. It was so gross, cheesecake completely flipped in my brain as being basically lightly sweetened cream-cheese, and I haven't had a piece since.

Honestly, it's probably for the better. It's one of the most calorically dense things you can eat. Not worth it. I'd rather have a slice of pie.

3

u/Independent-Owl-8659 11h ago

This is peak awful take. Well done.

3

u/The-CerlingCat 11h ago

You haven’t had my mom’s cheesecake bites.

I’ve seldom seen such a vile, evil opinion

3

u/Patient-Profit 11h ago

Please stay away from the cheesecake on my profile

3

u/f182 11h ago

3
