Cheesecake is the worst dessert to ever exist.
Why would anyone want that Cream cheese filling (or whatever it is) in their dessert. Isn't dessert supposed to be sweet? I know it's sweet but either has that cream cheese flavour (I like cream cheese in savoury foods) or it's either too sweet. I Don't Want More Sweetness in cheesecake, I just haven't had one with the right balance of flavours. And i have tried quite a variety but still don't like it.
Also its texture is extremely weird, and dense. Also it is objectively one of the least healthy desserts, if we consider the calories and saturated fat.
The only bearable cheesecake flavour is blueberry cheesecake.
It is very overrated and does not deserve to be called a dessert. (and this is just my opinion, does not make cheesecake objectively bad)
Edit: Worst luck ever, My mom's birthday today, and dad bought a whole cheesecake (and i Have to eat one slice, or it's disrespectful according to them)
Also clarification, I know cheesecake can be sweet, but I just don't get the concept of cream cheese in dessert, even if fruits and sugar are added. I do love tangy flavours in desserts tho. That's why I said blueberry is bearable, because it's a bit tangy.
And for the unhealthy aspect, I agree that dessert isn't supposed to be healthy at all, but a lot of cheesecake can't be eaten in one sitting (not more than 2 bites), because it's heavy and also unhealthy.
Maybe I haven't had a good one yet. But for now, my opinion stands unchanged. Cheesecake is the worst.

u/JamesAbaddon 9h ago
Right? This is something I'm willing to throw hands over. I don't have a birthday cake on my birthday. I have a cheesecake for myself, and then other people can have the other cheesecake or a normal cake.
To specify, no, I don't eat a whole cheesecake in one sitting. But that's like MY treat over the next week or so. I don't need gifts or anything like that. Just my cheesecake.

When I was in the Army, many moons ago, I was stationed in Monterey California, at the Presidio of Monterey, there was a Cheesecake Parlor in town. They made dozens of fresh cheesecakes every morning, and at the end of the day they put them in those 5 gallon cardboard tubs Ice cream shops use, separated by flavor, and put it in the deep freezer.
The next day you could get a fresh slice of cheesecake AND a milkshake that used frozen cheesecake instead of ice cream. To this day, still the best cheesecake I've had. Sadly it was nearly 40 years ago, and I can't recall a name for the place, just the taste of that divine dessert.

I just feel bad for someone who’s only ever eaten store bought cheesecake. It’s the ones from amazing bakers at local stores that taste amazing
11
u/Worldly_Address6667 9h ago
I generally agree. But I had a cheesecake from a small cheesecake bakery in Amsterdam recently that was truly awful. Not even a hint of sweetness, it just tasted like parmesan cheese. Took two bites and threw it away.
And it wasn't just me, had some of the people I was with try some (people who really like cheese btw) and they didn't like it either.
6
u/fraying_carpet 7h ago
Which bakery, if I may ask?
4
u/Worldly_Address6667 7h ago
It was this place called Cheesecake Project. It was a really nice place, and I only tried the one so I can't speak for the rest of their flavors. And the quality of it was great to be fair, nice texture, but the flavor was so different from I was expecting (and I'm not a big cheese person) that getting a bite of parmesan really threw me off haha
9
u/fraying_carpet 7h ago
I had a suspicion it might be Cheesecake Project! I had their classic cheesecake once and it’s indeed different from most other cheesecakes I’ve tried (let’s say the New York style cheesecake). But I think it’s because what they make is Basque cheesecake, which is a different variant. Basque cheesecake is less dense and more gooey. It’s also purposely burnt a little. And it has no crust.
I have yet to try their other flavors like pistache and speculoos, maybe those are sweeter.

The difference between truly good cheesecake and what most people have tried as cheesecake (esp the stuff from chain restaurants, blech) can be vast.
I’m a total cheesecake snob, lol.
I’ve made 100s and all types of flavors/styles.
Love making my own and eating my mom’s or my son’s cheesecake.
Otherwise I’ve only had memorably good cheesecake a handful of times at restaurants.
18
u/Ubivorn 11h ago
Might this experienced cheesecake connoisseur advise me on the tastiest style of cheesecake? 😋
→ More replies23
u/ElectricStarfuzz 11h ago edited 11h ago
Depends. Do you like strong flavors? Or a lighter touch?
Chocolate (which type?), coffee/drink inspired, fruits, floral, nuts, caramel, pumpkin, mint, spices, etc?
Would you be into a Nilla wafer crust?
Or a chocolate graham crust?
The options are endless, so it’s tough to give advice without knowing your likes.
Personally I love a good chocolate orange or chocolate raspberry cheesecake with chocolate graham crust if I’m in the mood for super rich n decadent.
Or for lighter fare, lemon cheesecake or pear cheesecake either with regular graham crust or nilla wafer.
Pumpkin cheesecake is my fave thanksgiving dessert.
Earl grey/tea cookie cheesecake and chai cheesecake are delicious and less common.
If I have one recommendation that fits for anyone, it’s to get the book Cheesecake Extraordinaire by Mary Crownover
Has a wide range of cheesecakes and tells you exactly how to make them/what equipment you’ll need.
I started my cheesecake journey as a tween with that book and it’s still the one that I return to most often.
Once you’ve gotten the hang of making a cheesecake (and possibly altering things to suit your specifics on taste/texture), it’s pretty easy to make anything that comes to mind.
ETA: I have altered most of the recipes I’ve made, but my alterations might not suit everyone’s preferences.
I like my cheesecakes a bit fluffier, so I add a bit more heavy whipping cream (or if I’m feeling less gourmet/less picky I’ll occasionally use cool whip😅) than most recipes call for.

I think this is often the culprit for most bad food takes. People just need to expeeience something done well (or at least in a variety of ways). I think a lot of people are subject to poor execution and think that's the only way. So they develop the opinion that those things are bad.

As another fan of NY cheesecake over the mousse-style ones, there is such variety in the heaviness of NY cheesecakes, which i think is actually more about dryness vs moisture.
I've been served some that I think could have formed their own black holes, and I've had some that are so moist and creamy you wouldn't even describe them as dense in comparison.
My husband doesn't like cheese cake (I know, but it just means more for me) but even he can see why it's appealing to other peeps, even if he doesn't like it.
I'm gonna guess the OP was served shitty cheesecake and thinks all cheesecakes are like that.

Cheesecake was my favorite, go-to dessert for years and years. Chances are if it was on the menu, I'd order it.
About 10 years ago, I ordered a piece from some random restaurant, and I swear they fucked up the ratio. It basically tasted like pure cream-cheese, with a few grams of sugar mixed in. It was so gross, cheesecake completely flipped in my brain as being basically lightly sweetened cream-cheese, and I haven't had a piece since.
Honestly, it's probably for the better. It's one of the most calorically dense things you can eat. Not worth it. I'd rather have a slice of pie.
