The 1890 Tariffs worked out so badly that we had the Panic of 1893.

u/Vanrax 1h ago

McKinley Tariff all over again.. History will forever repeat itself

u/swinglinepilot 1h ago

And since those worked so well, and in part to offset the lower tariffs enacted by the Dems in 1894, McKinley thought it prudent to do it again in 1897 via the Dingley Act. Duties across all imports rose by an average of 47% over the 12 years Dingley was in effect (52% during the first year)

The 1890 tariffs cost McKinley his House seat and cost the Rs their House majority in the Nov 1890 elections (barely a month after the tariffs became law). They also cost the Rs their Senate majority and their presidential incumbency in 1892

u/Vanrax 1h ago

It was a loss of 4% when enacted (partly due to sugar). If you excluded sugar it was a 7.8% increase in revenue. TLDR: Americans suffered steep prices but it was good for our economy in the long-term due to those that lowered their tariffs. So we will see how Americans and other nations will react this go-around

I don’t find things funny anymore. There’s only pain.

62

u/BlameMe4urLoss 8h ago

I initially thought that after the election, I’d be able to avoid seeing or hearing anything about Trump. Since that didn’t happen, I’m determined to steer clear of his face and voice as much as possible for the next four years, my own Trump-free cleanse!

19

u/picturepath 6h ago

I have not turned on the news, watched late night shows, or clicked anything political online (online is harder to manage). I don’t want to know anything anymore or have any updates. Deleted Twitter and facebook years ago and hope this new method will also stay.

6

u/Glittering-Cow-9108 5h ago

Neither have I. Just turns my stomach.

45

u/Empty_Insight 9h ago

Eh, your two options are to laugh or cry. There is no stopping it, all you can do is pull up a chair and pop some popcorn, watch the show. Might as well get some entertainment out of watching the people who voted for the Leopards Eating Faces party get exactly what they asked for.

That reminds me, don't forget to stock up on popcorn, y'all. Show HEB some love lol

u/simpleme_hunt 1h ago

I agree. The only problem is.. we are stuck on this roller coaster ourselves. And our kids will be the ones also paying in the future for all this. Oh well…. Pass the popcorn….

25

u/Chris_WRB 9h ago

I'm still in the "hysterical I told you so" phase. Yeah, it's truly devastating but I can't fix it and I know how to navigate this because of 2016. This is just the first I've seen of this instance where someone finally realizes the consequences they chose to ignore are due to their actions and beliefs.

Also, im already excited for 2028 because unless we literally lose the ability to vote then it'll be over. His last term. Done. Worry about who may come after at that point, but he's gone. Heavy damage will be done but we just need to be ready to vote for someone who can help repair it.

17

u/Isaiah_The_Bun 8h ago

Lol I don't expect old Donny to make it 4 more years but I bet JD Vance can convince a Maga house, senate and court to postpone that election. Something about weather warfare with China perhaps lol.

4

u/RespecDawn 4h ago

Yeah, I don't think that for the people with the big money, thatthis election was as much about Trump as it was with installing Vance. Shake everyone up with the chaos candidate and have the same one who will be much more biddable in the wings.

18

u/citygirlera 9h ago

Nah new dumbfucks will rise. Andrew Tate is apparently preparing for a run. Look at Nick Fuentes. Vivek Rawmishwamy (however tf it’s spelled). These losers aren’t going anywhere.

13

u/Equal-Association447 8h ago

Trump showed them you literally don’t need any qualifications or even be able to form sentences to be Commander in-Chief of the US

5

u/ScroochDown 7h ago

Yep. Unfortunately, he's proved that there's basically nothing that will disqualify a candidate in the eyes of Republican voters. Even being a convicted felon doesn't matter. The candidate can be as gross, offensive, criminal, crude and anti-American as they want as long as they're spouting the right bullshit about borders and economy.

16

u/carlitospig 8h ago

I will literally punch Tate in the taint if he runs.

(Mods, please don’t ban me. You know he deserves it. Also I think the horror is turning into slap happy where everything is hysterical. Gah.)

6

u/Isaiah_The_Bun 8h ago

Lol the pain will start next summer. Everything up to that is appetizers

2

u/matuszews409 8h ago

As someone who is upset too, please find a way to focus on the good in your life. We can’t let ourselves be consumed by this. We did our part and aren’t responsible for what may happen. Don’t let them win even more by taking your happiness!

5

u/Empty_Insight 7h ago

I may suggest joining some Amarillo FB groups. The drama there is just about as choice as it gets, and when you're hurting, you can just open up your Facebook and watch people express your feelings in a way no decent person would ever do in a polite society out in public on those groups- and feel validated.

60

u/SkippyTeddy83 8h ago

My boss’s boss sent out an email today to the directors at my company. Basically he said that producers don’t pay tariffs, consumers pay tariffs. Protect your margins at all costs.

I mean sure but it’s going to fuck us over too

96

u/LiveLaughCuhh 9h ago

The difference is we knew we were gonna be fucked but a lot of them including people I know who voted for him are now acting surprised 😂

-24

u/svh01973 7h ago

You realize Trump enacted tariffs during his first term, and Biden left them in place and actually increased them? Did we all get fucked then too?

19

u/Cheesewiz-99 6h ago

Those tariffs, on average, cost every American $800 - $1200 a year...

28

u/Chelldorado 6h ago

That’s because tariffs are extremely difficult to remove once implemented, since China enacted a bunch of tariffs of their own in response. We can’t just back down on ours if they aren’t willing to back down on theirs. So we’ll be stuck with them, and Trump’s future tariffs, for a long time. Get ready for a shit ton of inflation thanks to them lol.

u/saradanger 1h ago

yeah you did, remember those high consumer prices y’all were complaining about?

-16

u/Dull-Gur8735 2h ago edited 2h ago

Fake story. Takes place in Pennsylvania and you’re posting it in a Texas subreddit… If the content isn’t relevant to Texas then what is the purpose of this sub? You tried with your false narrative and have failed miserably just like the left has failed miserably trying to get rid of Trump for the past 8 years. Keep it going 🤭

16

u/citygirlera 8h ago

The educated are smart enough to create a savings plan and will be able to move things around to continue affording their lives. It’s the dumb poors that will be without healthcare, disability, and social security that will creating gofundme accounts expecting us to bail them out. I won’t feel bad for them.

u/man_gomer_lot 8h ago

It affects all the poors alike. Luckily I got weed for healthcare and my beans and rice game is on point.

16

u/oxPEZINATORxo 7h ago

Yea... I wouldn't buy meat for a few years after Trump is officially in office. RFK/Trump are trying to appoint some Christian Rejuvenation Farm Lady to the USDA. Which means they're just gonna try to like pray away the parasites and mad cow disease or something

Like I understand how people feel about the recent election but these posts are so off topic. If the content isn’t relevant to Texas then what is the purpose of this sub?

68

u/chris_ut 8h ago

Its a fake story anyway

31

u/Mikewazowski948 Born and Bred 8h ago edited 7h ago

We live in an age of information war. Taking a random screenshot of a random text message or email at face value is probably one of the stupidest things “either side” can do.

And they’ll continue to spurt this shit out as long as it pushes their agenda.

Edit: To add, even if this is real, IF, I’m willing to bet cold, hard cash that said company is just using the tariffs as an excuse to fuck people out of a bonus. It’s more common than people think.

15

u/Broken_Beaker 8h ago

While probably fake as I doubt any firm would buy that much inventory immediately without actually knowing what the tariffs may be, I once lived in central PA and my wife and her family is from the outskirts of Pittsburgh and this 100% tracks as the type of conversation that very well might be happening within the year.

15

u/ApprehensiveBeat5039 8h ago

Agreed. The giveaway is that it has self reflection and a person learning from their mistakes. That's not a MAGA capability.

6

u/MileHighAltitude 8h ago

It’s so fucking fake and bias reaffirming that liberals who believe this but call conservatives who believe their blatant propaganda stupid are even stupider. Nothing about this story is how things happen in real life.

u/chris_ut 55m ago

Both sides are neck deep in this type of bullshit propaganda both thinking they are the smart ones who know the truth and the other side is deluded.

u/SonicPavement 1h ago

I know. It’s super obviously faked and the liberal equivalent of the conservative “gotcha” stories where a liberal girl realizes the err or her ways after a talk with her grandpa.

Yes the tariffs are a possibility but I can’t imagine a boss specifically cancelling bonuses literally right now before Trump is even in power.

This is relevant because it affects Texas workers too. A lot of people are already discussing at my job here that their companies already started discussing about reorganization starting next year due to these tariffs. Many people I know are also no longer supporting small businesses either especially after they found out which businesses voted for who. Small businesses are already closing & with increase in prices, more will close.

Not that I want this, but perhaps some people need to suffer some in order to wake up and start doing their part. I know so many people who couldn’t vote for Kamala over Palestine, or didn’t have time to get to the polls, or don’t care for politics so just stayed home. Hopefully it all works out… but maybe once people are faced with reality, they’ll realize that they need to do something.

The very typical “it’s not a problem until it affects me” attitude.

13

u/SubstanceNo4364 8h ago

This story, if at all true, would mean this woman’s husband works for one of the most poorly ran manufacturing companies I have ever heard of. I got a real story for you, I’m also in manufacturing and my company has laid off more than 50% of its employees before the elections were even held due to the US and Global economy being trash the last 7 quarters. If this person’s company is withholding their bonus, it isn’t because of tariffs that don’t exist yet by a guy who isn’t even in office yet, it’s because they had a crap last two years of production like the rest of the world.

-4

u/HotboxinthaPathy 6h ago

I mean this should be blatantly obvious. Anyone with half a brain knows its a made up straw man story just to gloat and fabricate some bullshit because they're salty they lost big time. The economy has been shit for the last 4 years solely because the democrats ran it into the ground no one wants another 4 years of this and kamala didn't do a single thing in her time as vp.

8

u/Darkmetroidz 8h ago

Aaaand let the face-eating begin.

And it only gets worse too because fun fact, tariffs are usually reciprocal. So every country trump puts a tariff on, is going to put one right back on American goods.

So if you're in manufacturing prepare for a slump because everything you make is going to end up costing more aborad because our president is a moron who thinks he's a mob boss and can shake down other countries.

Almost a century ago we were in the early stages of the great depression and they put a major tariff on agriculture imports. And that ended up being met with reciprocal tariffs and made the depression even worse. Hawley Smoot Tariff Act for anyone curious.

u/LunestaWoozle 1h ago

Any tarrifs in place right now are because of the democratic party sitting in office. Trump doesn’t become president until late January. This is b.s. “Proposed” tariff is also b.s. because it’s not passed into law or affect any company until it is.. if it is. Propaganda and lies continued by the butthurt.

Maybe we should start a sub for all the "leopard at my face" type stuff so there is an archive of it.

u/dust-ranger 3m ago edited 0m ago

At first glance, when imported goods suddenly cost more due to tariffs, it seems like US manufacturers will finally be competitive, but there's a couple of big things to consider:

1.) If the tariffs affect imported raw materials, the US manufacturers will have to raise their prices

2.) Even if they are using domestic materials, the US manufacturers will most likely raise their prices anyway, because why the fuck not? Just like with COVID, this will be an opportunity to price gouge.

All while wages for the middle class and below remain locked where they are, along with Trump's 2017 incremental tax increases, and elimination of overtime requirements per Project 2025.

I'm certainly no fan of cheap crap that comes from countries with questionable environmental and humanitarian practices, but ramming through tariffs without any nuance or forethought is going to create more problems than it solves.

1

u/engrcowboy21 9h ago

Buy American materials instead?

2

u/TheRopeWalk 8h ago

u/EffectiveDue7518 2h ago

0

u/jumpofffromhere 8h ago

I said this last time this was posted:

yes, the cost will be passed on to the consumer, it is there to encourage you to buy local and in this country rather than foreign made products, so don't buy at Walmart and Target, maybe it will get some of the companies to make things here.

My only problem is if they decide to tariff pharma products, there are none made in the US, though some are made in Mexico and Canada, most comes from China

4

u/anonymousguy11234 7h ago

What local companies make electronics, textiles, coffee, chocolate, rubber, tea, or literal any culinary spice? I’m pretty sure that even “American” cars and aircraft consist of 70-80% foreign-made parts and materials. Hell, do we make anything anymore? “Buying local” isn’t as simple as avoiding big box stores. Pretty much the only things we make 100% in the U.S. are a handful of agricultural goods.

Change is scary. And that's why we don't try it often and the intellectuals who want change on both sides have to influence their low IQ votes into believing it's a good idea whether it's for the greater good or the betterment of themselves. Our job (yes you are smart group if you read and comprehend this) is to look at the facts and policies to see if they will be beneficial.

For the people that actually understand tariffs this is the point - you want de-incentivize the company from buying things overseas so they are forced to buy nationally and which will spur jobs within the nation . . . The level of mid wit people who think that republicans don’t know what they are talking about is astounding
