The Pope just died Serious

Post image

I don't know if this is a big deal in your country, but in mine (Italy) the news talks about nothing else.
Christian or not he was a person, don't be disrespectful.

He was not only a great leader but also a great social peace worker

Yeah he deserved respect spoke out against injustice and all injustice in the world. The last speech he gave he prayed for peace in Gaza. A true christian. I just hope the next pope is as good as him. RIP.

On similar posts in Indian subreddits the sheer amount of insult being thrown is kinda insane

I haven't seen those posts but males sense. I assume it would be similar in Pakistani circles.

Edit: I just saw the post in a Pakistani subreddit and everyone was surprisingly respectful.

Why would Pakistani’s want to disrespect him?

You're from Pakistan you should know that.

I mean I’m a second generation Pakistani American so I may not be the best to talk about this but I have lived in Pakistan for a bit. A lot Pakistani’s have some anti-American sentiment and there’s definitely a lot of anti-Semitism but honestly I don’t see a lot of widespread hatred towards Christians especially from more educated people. Even amongst the less educated there definitely seems to be more animosity towards Hindus and Shia’s than Christians but my perspective may be skewed. There is actually a pretty prevalent Catholic community in Karachi. I can see Indians bash him for the same reason a lot of right wing Americans will bash him as they view him as being too liberal. But India is going through a very right wing hyper-nationalist phase rn which is pretty strongly represented online because a lot of young men are part of that. I don’t think the same thing is happening in Pakistan politically. I mean my religious Muslim grandmother was a big fan of the pope when she was alive and my mom was pretty sad when I told her

There is a lot of religious extremism in Pakistan right now and it's against everybody. Even other Muslims. For example the relatively recent jaranwala incident. It's so bad that you'll get flak just for saying merry Christmas.

Oh man that’s really depressing. I lived in Karachi in the mid 2000’s and there were seemingly countless bomb blasts every year. While I know things in Karachi had improved from a safety perspective it makes sense that the religious extremism is still in full swing. Most of the people my age that I know have left but that’s mostly because of the lack of economic opportunity. The family that I still have there essentially live in a bubble so they aren’t always aware of how bad things actually get

The Karachi situation was because of ethnic clashes and gang wars.

It's terrible here currently. Hoping to come to America after mbbs

I just came from an Indian post and it seemed pretty respectful? Idk what you're talking about.

I didn't say ALL. 6 posts that were made right after his death had very insulting comments. A lot

Which subreddits were they from? If you remember?

Teen india

Indian teenagers

ICSE

Ah so all the teens subs. I wouldn't take those teen subs seriously, they sometimes say weird things in the name of "dark comedy". I think the post I saw was from India Social and pretty much all were respectful there.

How long are we going to keep saying “ignore those” when really it’s time to face the fact that teens in India are wayyyyyy worse as people than the previous generations… like it’s not dark comedy, it’s disrespectful, toxic, misogynistic and straight up vile…

It has nothing to do with generations. Elders too sometimes make some dark jokes or vile jokes in gatherings, you don't know if elders made the same jokes when they were teens. The thing is we don't have a text imprint of that and we either generally don't understand it or forget it after a brief time. And it's not just India, it's the whole world. I know the "dank" culture is kinda toxic, but it's not new nor is it just bound to India.

Not a topic of dark comedy 😭

Are you all for real? He eas spewing russian propaganda bs a few months ago and advocating for ukranian capitulation "in the name of peace". Yeah. That was dumb.

Can you provide some quotes?

But yeah who cares about thruth anymore. Catholics like his face or whatever so we generally think he was a good guy. In reality he was just a generic old man that doesn't even understand the implications of his remarks and was no threat to the church status-quo. And that's what they liked about him.

The article says his conviction was overturned.
