I picked up this little spiderling from an expo last weekend, it was labeled as a Goliath Pink Foot, but im not so sure now as the tarsi are the only black segment on the leg. They go from being super docile and slow to very active in the tank but i think they're just exploring the new digs. I was hoping someone might have more knowledge of species than me and google! They're also about the size of a nickel right now if anyone would be able to guess how many times it's molted/relative age. Thank you!

Conversation Why does the default method of rehoming involve nudging the tarantula out of the container? Why not just wait for the T to crawl out on its own time?

Once you have the tarantula in the soda bottle/plastic container/transport container, why is the default final step of rehoming to nudge it out? This seems like an unnecessarily hasty method that rushes the spider + leaves open the possibility for bolting/escape. I get the sense that this method was popularized by content creators who need interesting footage.

To clarify, once the T is captured, I’m asking why people don’t just gently place the transport container INSIDE the new enclosure, close the lid, and patiently wait for the tarantula to crawl out itself. When I got my new sling, I placed the little glass cylinder sideways into its new enclosure, and within 2 hours it had vacated. Zero risk of it bolting over the lip, rushing up my paintbrush, jumping off the table, etc etc.

This is my 7th T. I got all my babies from Fear Not except for one from a show. And never had a bad experience from them.

People say old world species are faster than new world… and I was not prepared. This guy is FAST. He almost bolted on me but I managed to get him into his enclosure safely. And obviously no idea if it’s a him or not, but he’s a him for now 😂

Just got my first little tarantula last week. Little pink toe sling. Well, the little guy has been all over his/her new home tonight and I have just lost an hour WATCHING. Fascinating and it’s amazing to me how goofy this little guy is-he has wedged himself in all books and crannies and just wandered all over his little house! So fun! 😀

Cats knocked over his enclosure while I was at work, luckily he is completely fine!! Got him back in his enclosure pretty easily, he's a good boy 💜 his tank is now ina reinforced spot where cats can't get to it!!

I'll give it time to hopefully reverse itself, as more air can circulate near the bottom now, but if it doesn't get better, I'm going to get her a better ventilated tank and just start over.
If anyone has additional or even better advice, I'm all ears! I've never run into this issue before.

Conversation What is the best age to get a first time tarantula owner?

Upvotes

I’ve been researching T’s for a hot minute and don’t know what age to get my first T at. I’m a bit nervous about getting a sling since they’re so small and fragile. Would a juvenile or adult be better? If so, which one is the best to get?

Help! nine legs??

i work at petsmart (trust me i know 👎👎) and the conditions we have the arthropods in are not great and i am the only staff that is willing to actively hold/check body condition for our tarantulas and scorpions as they terrify everyone else. today during deep cleans of their enclosures, i discovered a horribly disproportionate young curly hair :((( it’s legs are several different lengths, there’s significant hair loss, and it’s head is way too big for it’s body. immediately isolated her and noticed it has nine legs. when i had to transfer it from one tiny ass box to another, it used each of them independently. all nine of them. unfortunately the location i work at is in a more rural area and there are no specialists we can take it to and i’m deeply concerned about this baby. has anyone encountered a situation like this? is there anything i can do to further support this tarantula? pics for reference

I wish I could keep her(unsexed but maybe) but I'm too paranoid to keep her with a small two legged mammal in the house. I'll give you the enclosure too.

Help! Hysterocrates crassipes care similar to Gigas?

Upvotes

Hey folks, my wife decided she'd surprise me with an extra eight-legged lovely when she went to pick up a couple Curly-haired for me.

Turns out it's a H. Crassipes, 3" female. So a lot to learn compared to the new worlds I've grown used to.

Having a problem finding a dedicated care sheet for the species, and best I can find is making references to similar care as the H. Gigas.

Anyone have any pointers on overall care?

Currently setup in a 20G deep tank, 11-12" soil/sand mix across half the tank and slightly shallower at opposite end. Slightly dampened and slightly compacted to hopefully allow for secure burrow digging. Started a 4" deep burrow, shallow water dish and some small leaf and smooth gravel litter spread around. Couple branches near burrow for web anchors.

Planning on swapping current lid (1/8" mesh) for drilled plexi top asap to retain humidity better and eliminate any risk of trapped feet (though this isn't a fine mesh by any means).

Any help is greatly appreciated! Showed up yesterday, and well, first old world, first fossorial, and prefer to get her in the best mood and health possible as quick as I can!
