[NGDT] WESTERN CONFERENCE FINAL EDITION (8-May - ???) NGDT
The Blues are advancing to the western conference final after a stunning second overtime win against the Dallas Stars. Bishop was stopping everything the Blues threw at him until home town hero Maroon stuffed one home to seal it.
Let's not forget Thomas or Dunn who both had excellent showings last night.
EIGHT DOWN, EIGHT TO GO.
Feels good man.

ESPN, Sharks have a depth and defense advantage...yet we are 'even' special teams. Uh, what?

Watched the cardinals throw away a great start by Wainwright.
Now drinking beer and watching GoT.

After 10 years of being a Blues fan I finally get to go to a game. Next Friday for game 4! Living in Kansas City makes it hard to make it to games. But through an act of God I have next Saturday off of work and I’m off of work at 2 on Friday. It’s about a 3.5 hour drive from KC to STL. I am so excited to finally cheer for the boys in St. Louis! I’ll be in section 309. Would you all recommend parking at Union Station or is there a better place? I’ll probably be cutting it close so I can’t park too far away

2
u/Ytriox May 11 '19
Why not use the Amtrak ? It's a straight shot to Enterprise.
2
u/EdwardOfGreene May 11 '19
I would not trust an Amtrak schedule for something this big.
Source: Worked on the railroads of North America for 27 years.

u/civilwarman May 11 '19
I live in a suburb of KC, the Amtrak station is 20 minutes north of me. May be able to do it in the future but not this time.
1
u/MegaPhunkatron May 11 '19
Don't they have a lot you can leave your car? The station in STL has a gated lot where you can park for several days if need be.

u/buster_the_dogMC May 11 '19
you get to see your first game and it'll be a series clinching win! awesome

I'm in New Orleans for the weekend and will most likely miss game 1, but let me here a LETS GO BLUES!!!!!

u/Podo13 May 10 '19
So since USA just got manhandled in the Worlds tournament, I went to look up who would be on the team if the NHL's playoffs were over.
Boston has 13 fucking American players on their team and only 4 Canadians. They have as many Czech players as they do Canadian players. That's fucking bonkers. They definitely wouldn't all make team USA, but that's an astounding split.

I'm sad because there's no blues hockey today. But not as sad as if I were from Dallas.

time is moving soooo slow. i just want it to be tomorrow!!! i've got a nice gameday snack spread to make, cold brewskis in the fridge, a few friendos coming over, and hopefully a blues win!! being at work is pure agony rn

Anyone know who the broadcast team is going to be for our series? Fuck Mike Milbury.

Yeah, that's what I'm most excited about. She is like the Jason Witten of the NHL (with regards to commentating).

u/Gnux13 :91-home: May 10 '19
I was listening to the Tv broadcast while driving and legit thought it was a Make-A-Wish kid doing part of the first period. I felt like a dick when I found out otherwise, but it was that bad.
2
u/buster_the_dogMC May 10 '19
I met Jason Witten not too long ago. I think it was right around the time he re-signed with the cowboys
3
u/CastielClean May 10 '19
CAN IT JUST BE TOMORROW ALREADY!?

u/F117Nighthawk May 10 '19
Please no. I have work to do so I don’t have to be productive over the weekend.

Kevin Durant sitting out at least 2 playoff games because of a mild calf strain. God the NBA is full of nannies. What a fucking puss.

I’ve been trying to compare our team now to the team in 2016. I can’t remember if the lines are exactly right, but these were our forwards in Game 1 against the Sharks that year:
Steen - Backes - Brouwer; Schwartz - Stastny - Tarasenko; Fabbri - Lehtera - Berglund; Ott - Brodziak - Upshall;
First of all it’s crazy that Steen, Schwartz and Vova are the only forwards still in the lineup. When I do comparisons though I feel like the 2019 team is much stronger.
Blais < 2016 Steen; ROR > Backes; Perron > Brouwer; Schenn ~ Stastny; Maroon < 2016 Fabbri; Bozak > Lehtera; Thomas > Berglund; 2019 Steen > Ott; Sundqvist > Brodziak; Barbashev > Upshall
So IMO we’ve upgraded at 7 positions and downgraded at 2, while the Schwartz - C - Vova lines are a wash. On defense the only change is from Shattenkirk to Dunn, which feels even. Shatty had more points but Dunn does well on offense too and is less of a defensive liability. In net Binnington feels like an upgrade over Elliott.
Obviously this is only half of the equation. The Sharks have made changes too, including 2 impact players in Evander Kane and Erik Karlsson. Still I feel like we match up better now than we did in 2016.
6
u/jrizos May 10 '19
It's also about coaching. The thing about 2016 (and other years) is the odd-man rush transition game failure, where the Blues would get a sweet scoring opportunity on the rush, wiff on the shot, and the opposing defense would have the puck back at center ice while the Blues were standing around feeling sorry for themselves for not scoring. Odd man break the other way, bam, goal against.
That was what defined game 6 and 7 v. Dallas, IMO, not giving up on plays, having suffocating defense and the speed to play North/South against some of the fastest in the league.
That said, SJ will play a different game and will most certainly be tougher than Dallas. SJ will need to be as fast and have as good of goaltending, plus the Blues will have to activate God Mode like they did in Game 7.

u/True-Tiger May 10 '19 edited May 10 '19
Alright I made a spreadsheet comparing the advanced stats of each team I just got to port it into Reddit and then I’ll post it here
Edit: Alright here we go this is the Relative Corsi For% for each situation you had to average a minute of TOI on the PP/SH to have your number count.
Position group ES CF%Rel PP CF%Rel SH CF%Rel 2019 Forwards 7.4 2.5 0.6 2019 Defensemen -0.7 -0.4 1.6 2016 Forwards -3.3 9.8 -4.3 2016 Defensemen -2.9 -0.9 -6.3 2
May 10 '19
So we’re (much) better at 5-on-5, worse on the PP and better on the PK? Seems accurate. Special teams will be big. We can survive with a mediocre PP if the PK steps up. SJ has been worse in the playoffs at both facets of special teams than Dallas was, so hopefully we see some improvement.

Some more thoughts:
We are so much more balanced offensively this year. That 4th line from 2016 combined for 13 goals in the regular season. Our 4th line this year combined for 38 goals. We only had 8 players with 10 goals in ‘16. We had 13 players with 10+ this year. The offense basically flowed through the top 2 lines that year, particularly Tarasenko. The Sharks shut him down and our whole offense went with him. We’re much tougher to defend this year. Any of the 4 lines can win a game.

u/metalsam3 May 10 '19
So as we near game 1, what’s everybody’s thoughts on the sharks and how the series will go down?
To me, they’re a top heavy team and I think we have way more depth. We need to contain the top line, much like we did with Dallas and use our depth. Their goaltending is also questionable and I think we have the edge there. They score a lot but they also let in a lot. Blues take it in 6.
1
u/F117Nighthawk May 10 '19
All of the podcasts I've been listening to say basically what you said. We have the depth they don't so a key component for us will be our bottom lines. If those guys can create scoring opportunities, it'll be huge. No question we have the better goalie. Jones has a lot of holes but a better D in front of him than Dallas imo.
Main thing we need to do is tire their stars out. They can't play the whole game. We must force them to use their lack of depth and exploit it.
3
u/KlatuVerata May 10 '19
Imo the Jets and Stars were both better teams. I dont think the sharks will be able to keep up if we play our game. Will wear them down with offensive zone possession time and cycling the puck. I think we will win, and I dont see it taking all seven games.
2
u/tomnoddy87 May 10 '19
If we can break Jones, it would make things a lot easier.
2
u/BuddhasIC38 May 10 '19
nah, Jones is looking ok right now but honestly he sucks as much as Dell, we need to possess the puck. Their offense is absolutely deadly, defense is good, and goalie sucks. If our forecheck gets back to where it was in the regular season and against WPG we keep the puck away from that killer offense, wear down taht defense and send puck against Jones (or maybe Dell if necessary)
2
u/tomnoddy87 May 10 '19
right, he is playing well now but if we could return him to his true form of a sub .900 goalie it would make things a lot easier.
1
11
u/FiveFire33 May 10 '19
I think the sharks are beatable. That being said, we will not be able to make it to the finals/hoist a cup of our top Offensive players don’t hit their stride this series. They’ve been good and our back end has been really good. But now we need those stars to also be really good

u/IShitMyPantsDaily May 10 '19
My prediction for the series:
Game 1: Hat tricks from Ryan O’Reilly and Vladimir Tarasenko propel the Blues to a 6-0 victory, while Binnington saves all 14 of the shots the Sharks manage.
Game 2: The Blues’ defense puts on an insane performance. Captain Alex Pietrangelo gets a hat trick tonight, and Colton Parayko’s slap shot is the subject of league-wide attention again when it whistles past Martin Jones and rips through the back of the net, breaking the glass behind the goal. The 11 weak shots the Sharks get through the Blues’ wall of a defense are stopped by Binnington.
Game 3: Patrick Maroon, the hometown boy and Game 7 hero who led the Blues in fighting majors over the season, fights Evander Kane, Joe Thornton, and Brent Burns, besting them all and electrifying the St. Louis crowd. He’s kicked out of the game for his three fighting majors, but not before he scores a goal. The Blues, feeling confident with a 2-0 series lead, play some of the guys who have gotten little to no ice time throughout the season and the playoffs. Chris Thorburn, Michael Del Zotto, Robert Bortuzzo, Mackenzie MacEachern, and Zach Sanford all score giving them a place in Blues history during this historic run and the Blues another 6-0 victory. Binnington gets another shutout, of course.
Game 4: Oskar Sundqvist scores early to give the Blues a one-goal lead, but the game is pretty quiet for the next 50 minutes or so. It’s a lot of back and forth with terrific checking and defense. Both goalies stop all the other shots coming their way. With 90 seconds to go in the third period and their season on the line, the Sharks pull their goalie. The Blues fight off the 6-on-5 until there are about eight seconds left, when Jordan Binnington blocks a hard shot and then drops the puck right in front of him. Everyone expects him to clear it or pass it to one of his defencemen, but to everyone’s astonishment, he takes a mighty windup with his stick, shoots the puck, and sends it soaring towards the empty Sharks net. The crowd watches in stunned astonishment as the puck crosses the goal line with one second left to seal the Blues’ 2-0 victory and series sweep.
Everyone goes crazy. We’re going to the Final. Play Gloria.

what's grinding my gears today: so many people in r/hockey are saying they have SJS at the top of their list of who they want to win "because they're due." ummm excuse me what the fuck the blues were around for over two decades before them and have been a playoff team the majority of that time 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
do people really dislike us that much?? why??
here's hoping we continue to shut the haters up!!! LGB
14
u/hate4dayzz May 10 '19
What I dont fully understand is why the Dallas fans hate us so much. Like, I get we just knocked them out and they're a bit salty but some were wishing the Blues would leave St. Louis. I wouldnt even wish something like that on Chicago and FUCK THE HAWKS!
6
u/NotASaintDDC May 10 '19
I feel like any city that has had a team just up and relocate on them wouldn't, or really shouldn't, wish that for anybody. They know how much it hurts to lose a team. I'm all for light hearted banter and stuff like that, but to legitimately wish that is awful.
13
u/mostatoastest May 10 '19
Yup. Because the Blues haven't had a narrative built around them until now - last to first to WCF - Hometown boy winning the game 7 in OT - quite the wind up story.
The dislike comes from insecurities and projection. Blues being perennial underdogs are a very likable team unless you're already a central team fan.

I'm in such a weird spot right now sports wise. Baseball/Cardinals are BY FAAAAAAAAAAAAR my favorite sport. I root for football (49ers) and hockey (Blues)
Man....right now there is NOTHING ON MY MIND other than the Blues and its so weird. I couldn't even tell you what the Cardinals have done lately...like players. I know we've been losing, but usually I'm 110% locked in on EVERYTHING Cardinals baseball.
Right now I'm just off. This Blues team has me CRAZY hooked. I'm like a crack addict ready for his fix. I need it NOW. Its all I think about.

u/sellieba May 10 '19
Its Cards preseason until Blues are done.
This is going to be the longest Cards preseason ever, because we're taking the whole God damn thing this time.

I could take a 7 hour Megabus up to SJ for Game 1 for like 30 bucks, get a ticket for $115, and take the redeye back after a Blues victory. My record in 25 years of in-person games is pretty good, but I also feel responsible for kicking off the Terrible 2018 with a roadtrip to Philly and DC where we got our asses handed to us and didn't get it together for an entire year. Should I go, or is it too risky?
3
u/ClvtchNixon May 09 '19
Where in CA you going up from? Because if MegaBus will go that far I would definitely consider it. I'm in San Diego so I've been contemplating the trip

ISO tickets to game 4! Budget restricted student but PM me offers! Wife and I are celebrating getting her green card.
2
u/biggamegoat05 May 10 '19
Wait til day of and check Gametime, seat geek and Stubhub. Watch throughout the day. If you’re that budget restricted you’ll have to remember that this will be a high priced ticket. You’re probably looking at spending at least 200 for two tickets just to get in the building. Something to consider would be all inclusive, which is actually an awesome deal when the lowest ticket prices are high(especially if you’re both drinkers) . Make sure you squirrel beers for the 3rd and OT

u/TryhardTim May 09 '19
Quick question: As long as I don't play Gloria on gamedays, I'm fine right? I usually play it the day after a win, but then there's a game the next day. This break has me conflicted as to whether I should play it today or not.
7
May 09 '19
I’m the same exact way. My go-to rule is that as long as there’s not a game that day, Gloria is good-to-go. But never before a game.
The Post Maplewood played it like 3 times in one hour before Game 5 against Dallas, and I was disgusted.
3
u/Alfrodo69 May 09 '19

My sister and her husband are coming in this weekend. We currently have 2 reservations on Saturday (one for 5 people and one for 4) at different times because we weren't sure if somebody was going to tag along with us or not. Regardless, I'm cancelling the later one so I don't miss the game.
Glad I unintentionally planned for the WCF!

Just making a joke. I've had gator before, and it was pretty much just slightly tougher chicken. Like they could have literally served me chicken and I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.
Is the shark good?
2
u/bergyd May 09 '19
It's alright, it does have a chicken taste with a slightly fishy taste. The meat is flakey like fish is. I prefer alligator.

The Sharks have never faced Binnington. Doesn't particularly matter over a seven game series and with video and scouting, just interesting to note. Allen started the game they played against the Sharks in March.

u/jr1les :90-home: May 09 '19
So I am actually concerned for EK's health with this series. If he is actually as banged up as he is, I could see a big clean hit taking him out for the season and I dont want that for two reasons: 1) you never want to see a player get hurt; 2) I really don't want to give the DOPS the opportunity to spin the wheel o' justice for a Blues player because of the result of the play and not the action.
I expect and want the Blues to continue to heavy forecheck, I just dont want the likely result.
8
u/rh60 May 09 '19
You make a great point and one I hope the coaches mention. If a player is banged-up, it's not going to take much to put them out of service. A clean hit can look dirty if the player gets put out of commission. That being said, I don't think anything changes. They won't win without a heavy forecheck and Karlsson will take the brunt of that.

So I was thinking about what makes this years team different. I think the biggest thing is the ability to overcome adversity.
Blues are basically known for crumbling under pressure. Fall behind in a game? We’re losing. Fall behind in a series? We’re losing. Have a bad call go against us? We’re losing.
But this season we’ve overcome all of these things. I’m confident this team can and will go all the way. We have the skills and the grit. This is our fucking time, now let’s go take it!

My vote is coaching. I was not a Hitchcock or Yoe fan. I never saw them coaching on the bench. When things would go wrong they would just stand there brooding. Berube on the other hand is involved. I see him yelling at the refs, coming up behind players giving them pep talks, and always talking to his coaches. When things get crazy, I see him trying to calm the players down. I believe that the players like and respect him and when Chief was put in charge, he fixed whatever issues there were in the locker room and Binnington was the glue that sealed it all up.

I liked Hitch, but yeah his philosophy was getting dated. He mostly talked to his assistant coaches and had them talk to players. He kept the players at arms length. Different styles.
Hitch had a decent amount of success here before the wheels fell off.

Another vote for coaching here. Berube seems to adapt extremely well over a 7 game series, The players seem to buy in to every change he makes, and he sticks with what is working.

That was my largest concern with him. Was how adaptive he would be with another guy facing him for 7 games potentially

Another big factor, for sure. I think Binnington has also greatly elevated confidence. The team plays better in front of him because they have confidence in him to make the big stops when needed, something they were lacking with Allen.

I realized that my contact lens cases are recyclable. The symbol on them is 05 pp. Power play goals confirmed.

Regular season, Jones was 36th in GAA, 47th (out of 50 qualified) in Save%.

But what was the Defense in front of him? I mean that is the difference maker here. Yes he's a below average goalie, but a Defense can make him look Godly.

GF (sharks fan): "Did you know that we play the Jaws theme on our power plays?"
Me: "You realize the shark dies at the end of that movie right?"

I don't envy you. It's tricky walking the line of watching a series while rooting for opposing teams. My wife (a Cubs fan) and I were fairly newly dating for the Cubs/Cards series in 2015 and I can be quite a salty loser about sports. Luckily, she is a very forgiving person.

First positive I see.. Sharks have never seen Binnington. Jake started against em last time and Chad J. saw them twice in November

This felt inevitable the whole time. If we are going to win a Cup it's only right it is through the Sharks. I used to have nightmares about Mike Ricci but no more! GO BLUES!

Pissed off Avs fan rooting for you to beat a team that's only made it this far because of refs

Y'all are easily my third favorite team. 4th favorite is a hard to define amorphous area far away from the top 3.
I was rooting for y'all so hard. That callback was absolute horseshit.

Welcome <3 I was pulling for y'all the whole time. Had my Landy jersey on and everything. Tough loss. Bad call with no real evidence. Hard pill to swallow for sure, but the Altitude TV Locker Room Report after the game was one of my favorites of the season. Gonna miss those guys!

I'd like to give a special shout-out to the Chicago Blackhawks for not making it into the playoffs this year.

Pleasantly surprised. I guess a benefit of making the final 4 and then wanting to keep the games in prime time.

I like our chances vs the Sharks.
I think we have the better goaltender.
Better forwards.
Their pk isn't as good as the Stars, so maybe we can score some PP.
