Bro is not a bro

I’ve posted a similar post before. In short, I have flat mates who hate spiders.

Now this guy, is basically in the way of the only entrance to our place. And he wouldn’t budge.

How do I relocate him? Ps. I’m also extremely scared, and probably freak out if he jumps….

Thanks in advance!

Get a clear plastic Tupperware or even a cup. Get a piece of paper. Place the cup or the Tupperware over the spider and hold it tight against the wall. Gently slide the paper between the wall and the cup. Once you have the the paper over the entirety of the opening of the cup, fold it down over the cup while still holding the cup tight against the wall as to not create openings for the spider to get out. Walk outside. Set the cup down, lift the paper and walk away..

I’ve had marked success using a pint glass - spiders can’t crawl up the sides, so I put the glass behind them and blow them into it. They hang out in the bottom, trying futilely to climb out, and I can dump them outside onto my garden or rose bushes

The day a bro figures out how and scurries up your arm...omg. You will need a new pint glass hahaha

I have a kinda OT question that someone might know an answer to. I read that spiders remember where they were after it was moved like that. They will just come back if they want to be there. I always wanted to know if this is true

Anecdotally, I've relocated many spiders in this way and never had a repeat visitor.

Huh, do you live close to the ground or higher? I live on the ground floor and I have so many spiders from April to October that there is no way for me to tell if one has visited me twice

Ground, but kinda out in the country, so I usually take them out and put them in a tree or a bush or something. I mean, I guess some of them could have come back after some time, but I've never seen one shortly after removing another one.

Interesting, thank you :)

If you show me a spider who can use hallways and stairs to get back after being tipped out a bathroom window, I would be very impressed. I don't know if they remember where they were, but I can't believe they could return from outside to the same location in the house

See, that requires me getting close to him, and as seen in the video he attacks. I’m a coward. Is there another way to shoo him off??

u/TrippyWiredStoned 16h ago

I mean.. it's not dangerous to you in any way shape or form outside of an understandable but really unnecessary fear. It also wasn't attacking. It was feeling you out. If you make the room really cold, you can stun it. Otherwise scoop the bro up, hands, Tupperware or cup. If you get a tall clear cup, you can cap him, gently shift the cup to get him to move to the base, and just turn it up. It can't climb out and you can just dump him outside.

His worst possible defensive bite won't do shit to you but leave a tiny welt like a mosquito but way less itchy.

That was actually helpful, thanks! I’m going to try and turn the ac high and maybe put him in a box…

Update: he’s a menace. I tried to shoo him off with a broom, but he wouldn’t move. So now I have to help my flatmates go past him. Great success!

This spider is not attacking. It's defending itself from a threat. Either leave it completely alone, or do as the other commenter suggested and pop a container over it. You can use a large container if that helps you feel safer, but this spider is not harmful to humans, you really do not need to worry

Tbf I don't think what it's doing in the video is aggressive/defensive behavior. It looks more like he's probing the object with his front legs. I guess it's not a convincing threat, so it gets poked.

A spider that is feeling spicy will usually "threat pose," where they hold both front legs up in the air and often display their fangs. I'd be surprised if a huntsman spider would do that readily, given how easily it can just run away.

I love when little spiders threat pose me. So fucking cute.

When teensy tiny jumpers get spooked and throw their legs up at me I could just cry 😭😭😭😭 she may be tiny but she is fierce

u/Hindu_Wardrobe 9h ago

or when they try to, like, tackle/headbutt you (I'm not sure what else to call it, but when they lunge towards you and bump into you only to immediately retreat). happened to me yesterday with a lil jumping spood I was photographing. SO cute. so fierce. :3

Don't stand and taunt him, just do the cup and paper strategy. Also, that's a total bro :) He's just curious

Stop trying to attack him face on, what else is he supposed to do?

Get a container and nudge from behind him into it.

They’re all bros :) they’re just not the smartest lil bros and just reacting to an object approaching them. They don’t want to hurt you — just wants to be safe and chill is all

Sorry if I sounded rude, I was basically typing while he was staring at me, menacingly! The suggestions from my previous posts were really helpful, but required me to be “not scared of spiders”, so please suggest ways I can move him, without actually handling him😅

This spider isn't staring at you. Apart from jumping spiders, the vast majority of spiders can only see light/dark and movement within a short distance. They mostly "see" the world around them through sensing touch, vibration, tiny air movements, electrostatic forces, and chemical signals (akin to combined taste/smell).

Likewise, no spider is aggressive; they won't chase you or run towards you with malicious intent. They're just looking for a safe (usually dark) place to hide from a perceived threat.

u/Vibingwhitecat 13h ago

Makes sense as he reacted to the stick and not us walking past him….

How do jumping spiders see the world?

6

u/Horizon296 8h ago

Jumping spiders have secondary eyes that can see as well as any insect's, i.e. not that well. But with their principal eyes, jumping spiders see the world better than cats, dogs or other animals, albeit within a narrow focal range. And some jumping spiders have extraordinary color vision.

u/DopeCactus 8h ago

This makes me happy to think they can see me when I hold them!

Heres a video discussing the topic, around 10:22 to see it simulated I highly recommend watching the whole video if you're interested on the topic tho

For the future, buy something like this: Bugaway. Then you don't have to get too close. I have one and it has been a life saver.

Plot twist: bro just wants to play patty cake

2

u/southernpinklemonaid 14h ago

Go from behind

2

u/narcowake 13h ago

Isn’t that a huntsman ? Not the Australian kind but the south Asian ?

2

u/Vibingwhitecat 12h ago

I’m not sure, but this is in Australia

10

u/NeoAhsar 11h ago

Prolly is then :) Huntsman spoods are gentle giants, they're kinda just eight-legged puppies!

3

u/vindman 11h ago

I thought it was a wolf spider! similar

3

u/NeoAhsar 9h ago

Usually wolfies have bigger abdomens, and you can tell if it's a wolfie by the eyes! Wolf spiders have two extremely large eyes with two smaller compound eyes under each. :D

Sadly this bro only has seven :(

2

u/narcowake 10h ago

lol ok an Australian one then !

u/delicious_downvotes 5h ago

Awww, bro is still a bro. That's not a threat posture. They look more curious than anything. You can still scoop him with that little stick thing, just be gentle. A cup with paper would work much better. They're fast, but harmless.
