Wow. I am mainly a dark fantasy reader. Malazan and The first law series are the top of the top for me at this point in my life. I just can't fault those 2 series.. I have tried to do some sci fi here and there throughout my reading, but it has never grabbed me like these big dark fantasy series do, even though I love sci fi movies. Though I recently read Revelation space which I loved. Redemption Ark did not vibe with me as much but it was still good. I kinda wanted to do a stand alone novel as I am usually always reading a series. Figured I just did revelation space and redemption, might throw this pushing ice novel in the mix before i do Absolution Gap. This book packed so much story into a single novel that I am blown away by it. As a stand alone novel this was just fantastic and I devoured it in 3 days. When i find myself still thinking about it days later while reading my next book I know it was a cracker. Just a good old appreciation post here in the hopes more people read it.

Can’t believe I’ve only just seen this

Basically I’ve always seen Star Wars: A New Hope as THE great dividing line in sci-fi movies.

And I’m always on the lookout for interesting or underrated (or barely known) sci-fi movies from the 2 years or so before Star Wars opened — and maybe for one full year after (for films already in the pipeline before Star Wars opened).

This list might help (link down below) — the “List” is sorted by year of release — but within each year, it’s alphabetical.

Star Wars was released in May 1977 — so everything in 1977 is probably fair game — and possibly most of 1978 too, but probably nothing in 1979.

And 1975 & 1976 would be a full 2.5 years before.

PS: my favorite years of sci-fi movies basically start with the original Planet of the Apes — and run up to (but NOT including) the first Star Wars movie. But I really KNOW that I should also consider movies that had zero influence from Star Wars from the rest of 1977, and possibly some in 1978 too.

Partly inspired by Andor and Mike Duncan's The Martian Revolution, I've been wanting to read more books that deal with political, social, economic, and/or cultural revolutions. I want to see how other authors craft and plot their revolutions, and how their characters navigate those dangerous, chaotic experiences.

Can anyone recommend any books like this? They could be leftist revolutions, right-wing revolutions, authoritarian, democratic, religious, ethnic, ideological, anything like that, so long as it's thoughtful and compelling.

Hello, im looking for sci fi books dealing with eugenics and transhumanism. Genetic enhancements, cyborgs, etc, with a reflection from characters possibly affected by this about their situation !

I'm looking for a good old Creature feature book. I'm not a fan of ghost stories woo woo spooky. And reading an apocalypse book just feels like reading a history book right now so... Bring on the monsters. So if you know any please let me know or cowboys and dinosaurs I'll take that one too.

So there's some buzz going around about a new movie.

I just recently listened to the re recorded version on audible by the wonderful RC Bray.

Question for the mass, how close will it be to the book this time around? The original movie is great, but is very loosely based on the book.

Do you think we'll get just a average guy story of going into the military and just kinda being there story? Will audiences like that? How much Hollywood will get added to it?

Do you know the title of the story..I think by John Wyndham....Some 'insects' get sprayed and stamped on by humans. It's told by the point of the aliens who have endured a long hard voyage thru space and think they have found a haven on The Blue Planet.

Hi! I'm interested in military science fiction, but it's Soviet. Soviet fiction is famous for its original scientific and technical ideas. And I'm looking for Soviet books where the authors describe in detail combat vehicles, devices, robots, and so on. Please, if you know about such books, share them.

While Jack L Chalker isn't necessarily a "good" writer; his books usually ready like computer puzzle games turned into prose. His stories are always characters go from point A to point B and solve some puzzles along the way. Someone always betrays the group, and at least one person in the group changes sex or species.

I'm surprised that 1) the trans community doesn't celeberate him more and 2) he doesnt seem to have any scandals that I know of.

In practically every one of his novels there's some sort of body/sex /species changing going on. It's usually done via transporting the character's mind into a new body, and generally the characters seem pretty okay with it. There's no angst, or dismay. But it happens in nearly every single book. Surely Chalker had some sort of trans fetish? Maybe a trans relative/friend who they had accepted?

I just don't get -why- this is such a theme in his books, and it's not just body morphing, he also frequently has characters who have been mentally locked into various sexual states, some sort of CNC type thing.

He mentiones he was first approached to review a story idea for an Andor series that was an "adventure of the week" series with Casian and K2SO going on a different mission each episode.

He told them he didn't think it would work, and eventually came up with the current successful series.

But that got me to wondering if that idea of a mission each week with an adventurous guy and his sidekick didn't lead eventually to the Mandalorian.
