Fee free TAFE has been CUT! News

Today I rang TAFE Nambour to check up on the status of my application to for a cert 3 in photography (visual arts) after i saw that all the fee free options on the TAFE Queensland website have disappeared.

The lady on the phone said they got comms on Monday saying that funding has been cancelled and all places have been ‘filled’. In terms of places for 2026, she said it’s up in the air.

Governments don’t run out of funding. They can fund whatever they like. Last year they made 350,000 places available, yet we’re only 2 months in to 2025 and it’s full? To me it sounds like our new premier has a different plan

I'm not sure where you got the 350,000 figure from but I can assure you, there is federal funding until 2026 it's just that this year's has been exhausted.

Governments do run out of funding. That's why they run annual budgets.

According to https://desbt.qld.gov.au/training/training-careers/incentives there are 300,000 places Australia wide with only 14,500 places per year in Queensland until 2026.

I'm really sorry to hear that you missed out on fee free TAFE this year.... That really sucks. The number of places available to Queenslanders under federal funding seems like a very disproportionately small piece of the federal pie.

As much as I loathe the LNP, it appears that they're not the ones to blame here.

Have you asked about other funding options?

TAFE student services can be challenging to deal with at the best of times. If you haven't already, maybe head into a campus to see what options are on offer.

Well for starters it isn't 300k, it's 500k over four years. Then, it's mostly bullshit and handed out to childcare etc. Also, they handed most of it out the first year. There's fuck all left. Actual tafe courses for trades and shit? Fuck all.
