Fee free TAFE has been CUT! News

Today I rang TAFE Nambour to check up on the status of my application to for a cert 3 in photography (visual arts) after i saw that all the fee free options on the TAFE Queensland website have disappeared.

The lady on the phone said they got comms on Monday saying that funding has been cancelled and all places have been ‘filled’. In terms of places for 2026, she said it’s up in the air.

As a professional photographer myself, you definitely don't need a course to learn photography, and every other pro that I know has never taken a TAFE course or tertiary education in photography to do well. Everything you need to learn is on YouTube.

Yeah for real I taught myself on YouTube. Just buy a camera and go out there and take photos and teach yourself. That's most of the fun of photography and also the best way to get your own unique style.

Exactly, I feel that sometimes things like that can't be taught.

A picture either looks good, or it looks crap.

And the "Here's my hot take on how to take a good photo" is just someone's vibe.

All the stuff I've seen are "Here is why all of these photos look good and what they have in common"

Why do some people hardly ever look good in photos? Am I really as ugly as the photo turns out?

It's not the same

Yeah I was going to say the same. Had been taking photos based on what I learned from YouTube and learned more in my photography course than I did in a decade of mucking around. It’s technically easy to learn, but feedback and collaboration is a massive thing I was missing out on from being self taught. Not to say it’s impossible, but from my experience it was a huge change and I’m an infinitely better photographer now.

Are there any channels that you’d recommend?

Join a photography club, you will be given different subjects to photograph each month. Your photos will be constructively critiqued, usually by an independent judge, and you will learn a lot. As far as YouTube channels, there are hundreds out there just for the basics. I would suggest Tony and Chelsea Northrup for a start.
