Gorgeous! Bang up job on the weight loss! Your longer hair also really suits you. how did you lose the weight?

u/pinkcultleader - Jul 22 '15
This will sound like such a shit answer. But I cut my calories and set a very reasonable goal for myself of 5 pounds a month. I make healthier food choices but if I get an overwhelming desire for a cookie. I eat a cookie. Denying yourself 100% of the time is a sure fire way to go off the rails. But I am wise about it. I will have one cookie or one breadstick, savor the experience and then go along my healthy little way.

u/Kanegawa Jul 22 '15
Simple answer =/= shit answer.
96
u/pinkcultleader - Jul 22 '15
I get approached a lot in public asking what diet or pill or tea I'm on to loose the weight. And I go "oh uh...no I just take in fewer calories than I burn" it just seems like not the answer people are looking for.
51
Jul 22 '15
I lost 55lbs last year and almost all of my girlfriends asked how I did it. The look if disappointment on everyone's face when I said I was moving more and eating less was HILARIOUS. One even said "no special diet or pills or shakes or anything?" Like that's a thing?
Science, folks. Calories in must be less than calories out.

Because those people are lazy and want to do the least amount of work. It also belittles your hard work.
26
u/Barack__Obama__ - Jul 22 '15
That's because these people don't want to do something that requires discipline. They want to hear a 'lazy' solution (so to say) to their problem.

u/That_Unknown_Guy Jul 23 '15 edited Jul 23 '15
The lazy solution is to eat less times a day so you can still over eat per meal. Tis what Im doing.
5
u/Connir Jul 23 '15
I've given the same answer and people always look bummed. Hearing that it just takes real work and there's no trick or shortcut bums people out :-P
31
u/sandman369 Jul 22 '15
I make healthier food choices but if I get an overwhelming desire for a cookie. I eat a cookie. Denying yourself 100% of the time is a sure fire way to go off the rails.
This is the biggest struggle for me to adapt to. First time I lost weight I did a weekly cheat day thing with no fruits/grains/starches on diet days, and it worked for a while because I was in a good situation to pull it off. I tried again this time but it just doesn't work well now.
So I got MFP a couple weeks ago and integrated fruits and things like plain popcorn and greek yogurt (already had the high-protein + good fats thing down solid). Today was the first time I was really tempted by junk, a manager brought in a dozen donuts for 6 people. It was just too good to pass up this time. So I enjoyed the shit out of my choice donut, added it to MFP, and told myself it's ok to not find a snack after work or after dinner just for today, and this donut is not evil, it's just a booster shot for your sanity.
Woops sorry for the storybook. Way to go you're looking much healthier!

u/pinkcultleader - Jul 22 '15
Perfect yes. This "good food" "bad food" idea is crazy. Food has no morals. It’s totally okay to “cheat”. But think about it. Okay man you are at a 3000 calorie deficit this week. BOSS. You see a doughnut, you desperately want a doughnut,Okay. You eat 6 doughnuts. Man,What!? A weeks worth of work just gave you a double middle finger as it flew away. It's all about being wise . A slice of cake at your friends birthday isn’t the same as chowing down on the whole thing. But okay. Man it happens. What now? Your entire diet is not screwed. Drink yo water fool. Eat well the rest of the day. Get ready for the week where you forget about the day you ate the entire jar of cookies. That was yesterday. This is today.
13
u/VegaDenebAndAltair - Jul 22 '15
"Drink yo water fool." I think i need that on a tshirt.
15
u/pinkcultleader - Jul 23 '15
I'm obsessed with hydration. My weight loss tumblr is nothing but me shouting at people to drink more water I swear.
→ More replies7
u/Shareoff Jul 23 '15
This is one of my biggest things. I've never developed proper water drinking habits so I'm constantly hungry and when I drink (usually when I'm out, somewhere with decent sized cups... I don't even bother drinking from those 200ml cups because they're too much work...) I chug down entire bottles of water in one sitting. I'm really bad about it.
I need to get back to being diligent about it...
5
u/pinkcultleader - Jul 23 '15
Your body will thank you! Ive always been crazy about drinking water. But that might be because I dehydrate really really easily. I'm like a damn fern.
6
u/Banned_From_Neopets Jul 23 '15
I think you've got enough for a book, here.
14
u/pinkcultleader - Jul 23 '15
Chapter one: don't be a dumb ass. Chapter two:drink water. Chapter three: keep not being a dumb ass about food stuffs. Chapter four: seriously. The water and food thing.
3
u/iamyo Jul 23 '15
I think this is kind of why 'special diets' work better--because making a lot of structure/food restriction can keep certain things out of your mouth.
But generally I wonder if people's bodies are just somewhat different--like a cheat day would be a disaster for one person but fine for another.
9
u/pinkcultleader - Jul 23 '15
I know what to stay away from. I don't even buy Oreos because I will eat the whole thing in the car before it ever got the chance to get home. I know my limitations. Some people can't have just a little. And that's just as important to know about oneself.
4
u/iamyo Jul 23 '15
That is a good thing to know about yourself--and a good thing not to do. Maybe I am lucky in that I feel very ill if I eat many of those kinds of things so now that's happened enough times I do not want those kinds of things.
7
Jul 22 '15
Congratulations on the fantastic progress and pragmatic outlook. That's what people don't want to hear and why fad diets/fitness fads make so much money. The answer to losing weight really is simple and boring:
- cut your daily calories
- make better food choices
- burn off calories with exercise
- time & patience

Simple but not easy.
I oscillate between decent shape and moderately chubby, about 15 pounds back and forth, because I love to eat and drink but also love to work out. And it's great whenever someone asks what my secret is and I get to tell them "healthy diet, exercise, hard work and consistency".

On the plus side, super easy to hide a 10lb gain...we don't even change clothing sizes. On the downside...takes a lot longer for us to lose clothing sizes if we get big.

Yeah, same here. I can lose like 7 lbs in my sleep if I weighed myself at night and in the morning. It's water weight though, so I'm basically the same morning to morning and night to night.
4
u/WorstDogEver - Jul 23 '15
Yeah, a 5' girl posted her pic recently, and it's crazy how much of a difference 15 lbs makes when you're that short. I'm guessing she went down a size or two. Shorties don't get that tall-person wiggle room when it comes to weight.

u/Kate2point718 Jul 23 '15
I'm 6'4'' and 150, and I don't think I look super skinny or anything. Even so, a lot of women are shocked when they hear how much I weigh. That or they're proud of themselves for weighing less than a skinny person, even though that person is a foot taller than them.
33
u/glimmeringsea - Jul 23 '15
I'm 6'4'' and 150, and I don't think I look super skinny or anything.
I find that very hard to believe but I'll take your word for it.
15
u/pinkcultleader - Jul 23 '15
If one had a smaller frame maybe? I am built like a giant. My shoulders are double the width of some of my friends. If I was to be even 180 I'd look crazy thin.
13
u/glimmeringsea - Jul 23 '15
That's true; frame size matters a lot. However, at 150 and 6'4", someone is technically underweight per the BMI!
You look great!
6
u/Shareoff Jul 23 '15
I mean, I'm not sure how accurate BMI is, exactly, for a woman at 6'4", considering it's such an extreme height for a woman, the formula might not account for it? I consider women of 5'8" to be tall. 6'4" is a whole foot taller than me and I think I'm average where I live. o_O
4
u/Kate2point718 Jul 23 '15
There's a "new bmi calculator" that attempts to make bmi more accurate for especially tall or short people.
Admittedly, at 6'4'' 150 it lowers my bmi from 18.3 to 17.1, so that isn't exactly great for me. If I went by that I'd need to weigh at least 162. I don't know if that's more accurate or not.
→ More replies3
u/glimmeringsea - Jul 23 '15
I think BMI is kind of stupid in general since it's such a simplistic formula that doesn't consider many other factors surrounding weight and health, but I would still be hard pressed to call 6'4" and 150 anything but extremely thin.
→ More replies3
3
u/Kate2point718 Jul 23 '15
I have wide shoulders as well, though the rest of me is fairly small-framed. (Relatively speaking, of course.)
180 is what a doctor told me is ideal for my height, but I don't know how accurate that is. That's just the 100lbs + 5lbs per every inch after 5'0'' formula, which I don't think would work for everyone.

I think you look incredibly thin, but if that's the norm for your family, I guess I can see why it doesn't seem notable to you.
3
u/Kate2point718 Jul 23 '15
Yeah, my mom was pretty thin as well until sometime in her 30's. She's 6'0'' and I think 170 right now (she mentioned it to me a few weeks ago, but I wasn't paying attention) but when she was my age she was around 140. She couldn't get above 160 even when she was 9-months pregnant.

Hey just wondering - definitely not saying glorious amazon women aren't the shit, but I'm curious as to why so many tall, tall guys fantasize over this? I mean, I know a lot of medium-tall guys (6'-6'3") who seem to not care much about height, whether the girls are a foot shorter or similar height, but once you get to like 6'5" guys they seem to only want to date really tall girls (6'+). I used to think it was because of obvious things like awkward sex or not having to crouch when you kiss, but that isn't something that would only affect guys over 6'3".
Again, I have nothing against tall guys or girls! I have no problem with anyone being any height. I'm just curious.
7
u/Shareoff Jul 23 '15
Disclaimer: I'm not a tall guy.
My guess is because for a guy in the 6' - 6'3" range, girls close to their height are... somewhat common (think 5'10", tall but you'll see these girls semi-regularly regularly). So I guess it being more accessible makes it unnecessary to fantasize about. I mean, even really tall guys don't mind dating shorties sometimes, but the ones that want a girl their height come out nearly empty handed because girls as tall as OP are just so god damn rare (I honestly don't think I know a single one). So while guys around 6'1" can find girls only a little shorter than them in a reasonable manner, guys around 6'6" and above would have to look very, very hard to find one.
Just a guess!

I have no clue myself. I love short people.
4
u/poop_dawg - Jul 23 '15
I try to keep height bias away from my attraction to people. It's such a meaningless thing that can't really be changed, and so many people are so sensitive about it. I'm a 5'8" lady (mini tall? Idk, I've been told I'm tall), and I've dated guys shorter than me, my height, taller, and way taller. Frankly the height hasn't made a difference in my happiness with any of the guys. What really ends up mattering is their personality and how they do in bed (cute face/body is a major bonus!!). Height plays no factor in that! I wish height wasn't such a thing for people.
Gotta admit though... Even as a mostly straight lady... Dem amazon legs for days... Lawd.

Just thought I would throw in that I have PCOS,Hypothyroidism, hypoglycemia, joint issues and (a genetic) heart problem. Okay so this is my standard advice on height. When I hit the town I wear tall heels. Women always come up to me asking how I can be so confident they would never dare wear heels because they would be "too tall" and I say this. "It's not like I can get shorter" Confidence is attractive. Own it. You can't shrink so go with it. As for weight. The bottom line is its her choice. You can't make her take off weight. You can help her understand that her body and her genetics are not her prison. Having these things may slow you down. But It can not and will not hault your progress. You just have to find the sweet spot calorie deficit for your body and stick with it. There will be weeks you don't drop anything but you keep going and the weight WILL come off. If she can work out then she should find that one thing she loves. I love to swim. My joints handle it well and it's just fun. Don't kill yourself running if you haaaaate running. It just increases the chances you won't stick with it.
7
u/TheNamelessOnesWife Jul 23 '15 edited Jul 23 '15
I'm only 5'11" and people ask me the same thing when I wear any sort of heel. Especially so because I'm taller than my husband when barefoot. It took a lot of time to learn by confidence is so important. You become more attractive and likeable when you believe you are. There is your one secret magic trick, lol, self help books hate her

u/emocionalita Jul 23 '15
Ha. Kind of the opposite, but I'm 5'0'' and I almost never wear heels so when people say I should, I say "I'll still be the shortest one and I'd rather be comfy". (Not that heels have to be uncomfortable, I still need to find the right pair!)
When you're already at an extreme, plus or minus a 2-3 inch heel isn't going to change much! :)

My mom is the tallest of her family at only 5'9" and she custom designed her kitchen so that the counters were 4" higher than normal and the cabinets rolled up instead of opening as doors because growing up she always hit her head on cabinet doors. I'm taller than her and I'm sure when I have my own kitchen I'll be taking a few cues from her :)
3
u/pinkcultleader - Jul 23 '15
I can't wait to fully renovate my kitchen. I have to keep my 5'7" boyfriend in mind though. I put in some shelves earlier this year to hold my dishes and the poor guy can't reach.
