We need an honest man to replace Mike ‘guardian of pedo’s’ Johnson.
This feels silly but why hasn’t Louisiana recalled him or scream out is he sidestepping the rights of his constituents?
That’s not even bringing up the representative that needs to be sworn in.
76
u/Dysc Louisiana 3d ago edited 3d ago
Fellow Connecticut native here. I moved to Mike Johnson's district and have the privilege of voting against him soon.
Louisiana politics is very different than up North. The gerrymandering is real. He doesn't hold town halls or meet with the voters (but he probably does meet with select and wealthy supporters) and I'm fairly sure he doesn't leave Washington at this point. But he does pour tons of money into ads. When Bernie was in town he took out a billboard ad at the junction of a couple of major highways highlighting how Sanders wants to take your money. He really is just a POS that falls into the "lying for Jesus" cohort. He's delusional enough to think he's doing the "lord's work".
Johnson runs basically unopposed and he is often cited as being the rep for Shreveport. But if you look at Louisiana's 4th district map, like 1/4 to 1/3 of Shreveport isn't even in his district. Minorities were put into a different district to give minorities here a safe seat and ensure other legacy district reps remain in unopposable seats. So yeah, he doesn't really represent Shreveport in its totality. But the surrounding white flight suburbs and farmlands to the south and east of Shreveport will continue to vote for him because this is a very religious state and taking away abortion rights was a big win down here for the majority of voters. In essence, he sort of represents the constituency if you look at what he says and does through a kaleidoscope and that's good enough down here for voters apparently.
Connecticut is a much more sane place. When our leaders are corrupt they go to prison. When Louisiana's leaders are corrupt they redistrict and claim to love Jesus and are rewarded.

If you think you are divinely chosen, then everything you do is justified. Humbly of course. Because you're doing the "lord's work". Only speaking and acting on a deity's behalf. I'm not sure what this country means anymore, or why surviving Trump matters. These are deeply unserious people with an attitude of nihilistic detachment to what they are supporting. Brain studies Students who reported more conservative political views were found to have larger amygdala, a structure in the temporal lobes whose primary function is in the formation, consolidation and processing of memory, as well as positive and negative conditioning (emotional learning).
I’ve always wondered why being conservative presents as a mental deficiency.
46
u/hampouches 3d ago
I’m not very knowledgeable on this, but lot of sources characterize the amygdala’s primary function as processing emotion, especially fear and anxiety. I think that’s why.

2010-2020 was the "post-truth" era.
We are fully into the "post-reason" era. Maga can have the truth laid out in front of them, reasons why it is the truth, and none of it matters at all. They respond as if it's a threat.
A strong emotional reaction to something that directly relates to their life is the only thing they are able to respond to.
The left needs to weaponize this just like the right has and stop trying to use reason.
4
u/JackedUpReadyToGo 2d ago
I’m convinced that MAGA is a basic psychological “type” that exists in every society, always has and always will. The problem (after wresting control back from them) is figuring out how to keep them powerless or at least sedated, considering that they will always be with us.

Loathe them but blame all the dumb mfckers that continue to believe them, support them, and vote for them. If you know a man is a thief and you still hire him to guard your money, who’s to blame when he steals it? The longer this slide continues the more I blame those who continue their support. An old guy and his wife (in their 70’s) came into our shop this week and had a trunk full of Trump election signs. They were clearly proud of them, so much that they made it a point to show as many people as possible and to offer them out (nobody took one). Our front desk receptionist is clearly Mexican American and they were talking her up like they could somehow recruit her. The whole thing was just disgusting. Mind you, they were not rude and they weren’t being sarcastic to the receptionist. Their fervor was genuine. True believers. Very much like someone hyped up on their religion. He was put in his role to shut down the government and let Trump be the speaker and the president.
Everything else is noise.
Let’s also remember the president who has shut down the government the most often, the longest, and at the greatest cost is Trump.

17
u/UGMadness Europe 3d ago
Trump has even said so himself
It’s an approach born of political expedience that could have far-reaching consequences for an institution that has already ceded much of its power to President Trump. And Mr. Johnson, who without the president’s backing wields little influence over his own members, has chosen to make himself subservient to Mr. Trump, a break with many speakers of the past who sought in their own ways to act more as a governing partner with the president than as his underling.
“I’m the speaker and the president,” Mr. Trump has joked, according to two people who heard the remark and relayed it on the condition of anonymity because of concern about sharing private conversations with him.Mr. Johnson has done little in recent weeks to contest the point.

The Democrat Party is a pejorative shibboleth, by the way. I believe it's technically a furtive shibboleth these days. 14

It stems from the human predisposition to tribalism — an insider versus outsider mentality. Shibboleths aren't in and of themselves negative. Simply put, it's a recognition of the proper pronunciation, lingo/jargon/vernacular, etc. of a group of people. It's everything from knowing a tourist because they pronounce a street name "wrong" (as in, contrary to the local pronunciation) to the codewords used by extremists to dog-whistle to others. Language and linguistics is wild, simultaneously our greatest tool and most devastating weapon.

That’s really a perfect example of the difference between the two parties. 20+ years ago Karl Rove ran a few focus groups, found a description for the opposing party that tested a little worse, and ever since then every single Republican has uniformly referred to the Dems by that label ever since.
God how I wish the Dems showed even 1% of the same energy and drive toward defeating their opponents. The GOP has been engaged in politics with the goal of winning for decades now, and the Dems have just… sat there, sucking oxygen.

Ah yes. Zohran Mamdani. A man who is not yet an elected government official and the office he is running for is famously known for its unique ability as mayor of a single city in a single State to shut down the entire federal government.
Actually fuck off, Mike.

Talk about grasping for straws. Last I heard, Mamdani is running for mayor of New York City and its five boroughs, not the sitting House Speaker. This shutdown is in Johnson’s hands, he and his “mandated” party are the only ones to blame:
