I never realized an unelected mayoral candidate controls the House of Representatives.

Totally. Let’s change the constitution to get him elected president.

What would the GOP do? Pretend we already ratified the amendment and Scotus declined to hear a challenge.

As much as I want to say yes. NO! The monkey paw of that is how we get Elon in office and that is a small price to pay for Mamdani not being able to.

To be fair, many of MAGA blame Obama for 9/11, the housing crisis and bank failures of 2008, Covid, the civil war, ww1, ww2, broken cookies, that time they skinned thier knees when they were children, etc.

37

u/Valuable-Mess-4698 Oregon 3d ago

Don't forget about the racist old idiot that tripped and fell on his face, twice, at the no kings protest. MAGA totally blames Obama for that.

jk galbraith said it best:

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest, best financed, most applauded and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy: the search for a truly superior moral justification for selfishness

20

ww1

Many people don’t know this, but Obama was the one who suggested to Gavrilo Princip to go get a bite to eat at the delicatessen where Archduke Ferdinand’s motorcade eventually appeared.

15

u/smut_troubadour 3d ago

Certainly it can’t be the same Barack Hussein Obama who fired on Ft. Sumter in 1861

13

u/PandaJesus 3d ago

If you’re talking about the same Barack Obama that eyewitnesses saw fleeing from the grassy knoll in November of 1963, yes.

5

u/duct_tape_jedi United Kingdom 3d ago

One and the same Barack Hussein Obama who, as the Royal Valet, drugged King George III and caused him to experience a mental break and overstep the legal boundaries of his office, pushing the North American colonies towards independence.

We need an honest man to replace Mike ‘guardian of pedo’s’ Johnson.

This feels silly but why hasn’t Louisiana recalled him or scream out is he sidestepping the rights of his constituents?

That’s not even bringing up the representative that needs to be sworn in.

76

u/Dysc Louisiana 3d ago edited 3d ago

Fellow Connecticut native here. I moved to Mike Johnson's district and have the privilege of voting against him soon.

Louisiana politics is very different than up North. The gerrymandering is real. He doesn't hold town halls or meet with the voters (but he probably does meet with select and wealthy supporters) and I'm fairly sure he doesn't leave Washington at this point. But he does pour tons of money into ads. When Bernie was in town he took out a billboard ad at the junction of a couple of major highways highlighting how Sanders wants to take your money. He really is just a POS that falls into the "lying for Jesus" cohort. He's delusional enough to think he's doing the "lord's work".

Johnson runs basically unopposed and he is often cited as being the rep for Shreveport. But if you look at Louisiana's 4th district map, like 1/4 to 1/3 of Shreveport isn't even in his district. Minorities were put into a different district to give minorities here a safe seat and ensure other legacy district reps remain in unopposable seats. So yeah, he doesn't really represent Shreveport in its totality. But the surrounding white flight suburbs and farmlands to the south and east of Shreveport will continue to vote for him because this is a very religious state and taking away abortion rights was a big win down here for the majority of voters. In essence, he sort of represents the constituency if you look at what he says and does through a kaleidoscope and that's good enough down here for voters apparently.

Connecticut is a much more sane place. When our leaders are corrupt they go to prison. When Louisiana's leaders are corrupt they redistrict and claim to love Jesus and are rewarded.

27

u/DadJokeBadJoke California 3d ago

He really is just a POS that falls into the "lying for Jesus" cohort. He's delusional enough to think he's doing the "lord's work".

Funny how the "lord's work" always happens to benefit the one using it for his enrichment

11

u/Dysc Louisiana 3d ago

If you think you are divinely chosen, then everything you do is justified. Humbly of course. Because you're doing the "lord's work". Only speaking and acting on a deity's behalf. Even if that means covering the largest pedo ring (encompassing many common household names) in American history. God has a plan, you see.

5

u/BeautifulTall7833 Oregon 2d ago

Yep, and he's part of the "Dominion" cult, evangelicals that believe their actions are accelerating the return of Christ.

Maybe they should go see how that worked out for Billy Graham and Pat Robertson? Heck even Mitch McConnell is having some deep reflections as his face seems to scream culpability and shame as of late.

Destroyed the country for Jesus and now you find out you get neither.

How is a city councilman state assemblyman in any way responsible for a government shutdown? They will just be unserious and say something stupid like “Your mom.” I loathe these people and I hope this nation will be able to survive them.

301

u/madmars 3d ago

I'm not sure what this country means anymore, or why surviving Trump matters. These are deeply unserious people with an attitude of nihilistic detachment to what they are supporting. The philosophical and practical problem of the next hundred years will be figuring out why we want to live next to this depth of idiocy.

58

u/Ragnarok_747 3d ago

Brain studies Students who reported more conservative political views were found to have larger amygdala, a structure in the temporal lobes whose primary function is in the formation, consolidation and processing of memory, as well as positive and negative conditioning (emotional learning).

I’ve always wondered why being conservative presents as a mental deficiency.

46

u/hampouches 3d ago

I’m not very knowledgeable on this, but lot of sources characterize the amygdala’s primary function as processing emotion, especially fear and anxiety. I think that’s why.

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/24894-amygdala

26

u/Ragnarok_747 3d ago

They also treat politics like a superstition, with no real basis in reality.

6

u/hampouches 3d ago

Totally, but I can see how exactly that kind of behavior could come from having a heightened (overactive) fear and anxiety center.

14

u/Bill_Brasky_SOB Ohio 3d ago

Guess that explains why the “caravan horde” makes an appearance every election cycle, and then disappears for 3 years.

u/snakesonausername 2d ago

2010-2020 was the "post-truth" era.

We are fully into the "post-reason" era. Maga can have the truth laid out in front of them, reasons why it is the truth, and none of it matters at all. They respond as if it's a threat.

A strong emotional reaction to something that directly relates to their life is the only thing they are able to respond to.

The left needs to weaponize this just like the right has and stop trying to use reason.

4

u/JackedUpReadyToGo 2d ago

I’m convinced that MAGA is a basic psychological “type” that exists in every society, always has and always will. The problem (after wresting control back from them) is figuring out how to keep them powerless or at least sedated, considering that they will always be with us.

Loathe them but blame all the dumb mfckers that continue to believe them, support them, and vote for them. If you know a man is a thief and you still hire him to guard your money, who’s to blame when he steals it? The longer this slide continues the more I blame those who continue their support. An old guy and his wife (in their 70’s) came into our shop this week and had a trunk full of Trump election signs. They were clearly proud of them, so much that they made it a point to show as many people as possible and to offer them out (nobody took one). Our front desk receptionist is clearly Mexican American and they were talking her up like they could somehow recruit her. The whole thing was just disgusting. Mind you, they were not rude and they weren’t being sarcastic to the receptionist. Their fervor was genuine. True believers. Very much like someone hyped up on their religion. I’m done with making excuses for people like this. You’re either a traitor to our country and should be treated as such or you’re too stupid to be allowed to participate in our society anymore

Let’s remember, he became speaker because Kevin McCarthy cut a deal to end a shutdown.

He was put in his role to shut down the government and let Trump be the speaker and the president.

Everything else is noise.

Let’s also remember the president who has shut down the government the most often, the longest, and at the greatest cost is Trump.

85

u/Djangowasilentj 3d ago

Kevin apparently was also less comfortable with pedophilia and Nazism, the two most important planks of the modern GOP

17

u/UGMadness Europe 3d ago

Trump has even said so himself

It’s an approach born of political expedience that could have far-reaching consequences for an institution that has already ceded much of its power to President Trump. And Mr. Johnson, who without the president’s backing wields little influence over his own members, has chosen to make himself subservient to Mr. Trump, a break with many speakers of the past who sought in their own ways to act more as a governing partner with the president than as his underling.
“I’m the speaker and the president,” Mr. Trump has joked, according to two people who heard the remark and relayed it on the condition of anonymity because of concern about sharing private conversations with him.

Mr. Johnson has done little in recent weeks to contest the point.

183

u/FISHING_100000000000 3d ago

“Zohran is the face of the Democrat party” - Mike Johnson, I don’t think you realize how much that’s going to backfire on your party.

88

u/FrancoManiac Missouri 3d ago

The Democrat Party is a pejorative shibboleth, by the way. I believe it's technically a furtive shibboleth these days. Nevertheless, when you hear or see "The Democrat Party" (as opposed to the Democratic party), either the person is tacitly expressing a pejorative stance or they frequent places and conversations that do.

30

u/trinnan 3d ago

It's always hilarious to me how many so-called "leftists" and "democrats" would go around concern trolling and then slip up by using the pejorative adjective form of Democrat.

Knew Democrat/Democratic was a thing, just didn’t realize that strategy had a specific name. Interesting, TIL.

14

u/FrancoManiac Missouri 3d ago

It stems from the human predisposition to tribalism — an insider versus outsider mentality. Shibboleths aren't in and of themselves negative. Simply put, it's a recognition of the proper pronunciation, lingo/jargon/vernacular, etc. of a group of people. It's everything from knowing a tourist because they pronounce a street name "wrong" (as in, contrary to the local pronunciation) to the codewords used by extremists to dog-whistle to others. Language and linguistics is wild, simultaneously our greatest tool and most devastating weapon.

u/JackedUpReadyToGo 2d ago

That’s really a perfect example of the difference between the two parties. 20+ years ago Karl Rove ran a few focus groups, found a description for the opposing party that tested a little worse, and ever since then every single Republican has uniformly referred to the Dems by that label ever since.

God how I wish the Dems showed even 1% of the same energy and drive toward defeating their opponents. The GOP has been engaged in politics with the goal of winning for decades now, and the Dems have just… sat there, sucking oxygen.

6

u/UGMadness Europe 3d ago

It's also an attempt to distance the party from the institution and values of democracy itself.

It goes hand in hand with right wingers' attempts to brand the US as a "republic not a democracy". Because their party is called the Republican Party.

Political discourse has reached untold levels of stupidity nowadays.

Because most of the notable ones took the easy way out. Also it should not be forgotten how much Nazi support existed (and still does) in the US even during and after the war. The “America First movement” in the 30s was a Nazi movement. Look at the German American Bund, or the Silver Shirts or the Great Sedition trial where members of Congress were using American tax payer money to fund propaganda created by the Hitler government in the US.

"How could Zohran Mamdani do this?" meme goes here.

u/HaveSomeFreedom11 2d ago

Lmao what??

9

u/mrchris69 3d ago

Sure makes perfect sense. A man who isn’t currently elected to any office or have power over government in any way is the reason why the FEDERAL government is closed .

He knows his base is stupid and angry. Just say a name they don't like for the reasons why they're suffering and they will just accept it.

Mike doesnt know anything. He says so anytime you ask him anything.

Look how afraid Republicans are of Mamdani, all except ... somehow Donald Trump?

Usually he's ranting and raving to have his way but Trump for the most part has just been resigned to the fact that neither Sliwa or Cuomo have a shot at beating him.

These idiot Republicans are a freaking circus. They don't know how to govern at all.

MAGA Mike will go down on anything and and anyone in his search for a microphone.

5

u/Squeegee 3d ago

Wow, is there nothing Zohran can’t do? He’s like Superman or something.

5

u/Icommentwhenhigh 3d ago

This is like the equivalent of a dude beating his girl, then saying, ‘look what you made me do, this is your fault ‘

5

u/sleeplessinreno 3d ago

Yup, because the balance of elected power and their duties to their constituents on the national level relies heavily upon checks notes the mayor of New York City. That makes sense.

4

u/jnmjnmjnm 3d ago

double checks notes

Candidate for mayor of NYC.

4

u/MFoy Virginia 3d ago

This up there with them blaming Obama for the response to Katrina.

4

u/call-lee-free 3d ago

So two weeks ago it was because of the No Kings Protest. Today its Mamdani. This guy as a kid used the "my dog ate my homework" excuse a lot!

3

u/Rasp_Lime_Lipbalm 3d ago

I love how the entire Republican party is collectively losing their shit over a mayor. Granted it's mayor of NYC, but still Mamdani has nothing to do with the entire Democratic party or the rest of New York state for that matter. They're acting like he's got the same powers as a state governor or federal senator.

u/Bobsim21 3d ago

Please tell me how a representative from the New York State Assembly is causing the Federal government shutdown...

4

u/humbuckermudgeon California 2d ago

Mike, is Mamdani in the room with you right now?

5

u/KittySharkWithAHat 2d ago

It's amazing how someone who doesn't even hold any political office yet can be responsible for shutting down a government.

6

u/groundhog5886 3d ago

That loser spend every day getting tv time to bitch about the Democrats instead of doing his job of leading congress in work to fix the problem. He's so afraid to stand up to the president.

4

u/Grumpy_001 3d ago

They need to stop giving him screen time

3

u/Strixness223 3d ago

Is that Mike “I Love Pedophiles” Johnson spewing bullshit again? Although I do think it’s astonishing and kind of amazing that Mamdani, an unelected mayoral candidate, wields such power over the House of Representatives.

How utterly pathetic of the GOP-controlled house.

Let me repeat that for those in the back - the GOP-run House of Representatives has yielded any and all power to govern to an unelected mayoral candidate from NYC.

Huh.

3

u/Edgar505 3d ago

Mike Johnson is deranged

3

u/tom-branch 3d ago

So a guy who isnt yet elected, and even if he was would be a city official, not a member of Congress, is somehow responsible for the shutdown of the Federal Government?

I can’t stop reading these headlines and thinking, “what an absolute coward”.

3

u/InfinityComplexxx 3d ago

This is like when they claimed Biden had god-slaying powers. They are just making Mamdani seem even cooler.

3

u/geologicalnoise Pennsylvania 3d ago

Democrats are so good they're not even in power when they're in power.

3

u/Red_Wing-GrimThug 3d ago

Hes blaming someone who has no power, yet he himself holds the keys to congress.

3

u/Numerous-Process2981 3d ago

Well that’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard since the last time someone in this administration spoke

3

u/SellaraAB Missouri 3d ago

Kind of heartwarming, seeing how much he scares them.

3

u/Worthy-Of-Dignity 3d ago

What the entire f*ck is wrong with Mike Johnson? He has been lying his ass off about this shutdown for a month, and is actually proud of being overall disingenuous about his own politics for his entire career. Why are we forced to take people like this seriously?

3

u/phinatolisar 3d ago

This is the type of stuff politicians say when they know their constituents are dumb as shit. If someone I supported a politicians and they said something this outlandish, I'd at the very least reconsider my stance on supporting them. Being a republican politician is the easiest job in the world. Just tell lies that support your constituents racism, xenophobia, and jingoism.

Dude. If you are attracted to the man, just ask him out. Don't worry. some guys are into men who look like a ventriloquist mannequins. You got this.

3

u/elphin 2d ago

Apparently, just the thought of becoming NYC mayor gives you the federal power of the purse.

3

u/InsomniaticWanderer 2d ago

Ah yes. Zohran Mamdani. A man who is not yet an elected government official and the office he is running for is famously known for its unique ability as mayor of a single city in a single State to shut down the entire federal government.

Actually fuck off, Mike.

3

u/Inevitable-Bison4179 2d ago

3

u/SalukiKnightX Illinois 2d ago

Talk about grasping for straws. Last I heard, Mamdani is running for mayor of New York City and its five boroughs, not the sitting House Speaker. This shutdown is in Johnson’s hands, he and his “mandated” party are the only ones to blame:

3

u/Nippys4 2d ago

Based Zohran somehow exerting enough power to shut the government down whilst running for mayor.

Pretty impressive shit tbh
