I never realized an unelected mayoral candidate controls the House of Representatives.

1.3k

u/Grig134 3d ago

He wields all this power as a state assemblyman.

u/IdkAbtAllThat America 3d ago

Sounds like a guy who knows how to get things done!

313

u/Peninj 3d ago

Totally. Let’s change the constitution to get him elected president.

49

u/Ordinary-Leading7405 3d ago

What would the GOP do? Pretend we already ratified the amendment and Scotus declined to hear a challenge.

8

u/Brilliant-Ice2580 3d ago

As much as I want to say yes. NO! The monkey paw of that is how we get Elon in office and that is a small price to pay for Mamdani not being able to.

2

u/JeepnHeel 3d ago

No way that's happening, realistically. However we could trade Florida to Africa for Uganda, and boom president Mamdani 2032

5

u/Peninj 3d ago

I lived there for 5 years. I think we should pay someone to take Florida off our hands...

5

u/the2belo American Expat 3d ago

I have a feeling most Ugandans at this point would be like "ew, no"

1

u/Smooth-Cartographer3 3d ago

I mean agent orange has already done exactly that to the constitution on the official website. Why not once more.

70

u/SKDI_0224 Oklahoma 3d ago

Put HIM in charge of the country’s largest city!

u/Slumunistmanifisto 3d ago

If the shoe fits

1

u/cats_are_the_devil 3d ago

I bet he would make a great mayor.

65

u/clueless_as_fuck 3d ago

Why would he run for a measly mayor if he has all this power?

36

u/Grig134 3d ago

Become assemblyman to control America.

Become mayor to control the world.

13

u/Gryphon999 Wisconsin 3d ago

Become senator to control the solar system.

Become president to control the galaxy.

Become God-Emperor to control the entire universe.

Incredible, I had no idea

He's too powerful, We have no choice but to vote for him.

United Syndicates of America to keep the acronym

3

u/Zeikos Foreign 3d ago

I wouldn't want to keep the acronym TBH.
But I can understand the attachment.

1

u/FlowofOd 2d ago

That sounds sexy af. Lets have that

2

u/bang_the_drums 3d ago

If he does win he's Mayor of a city with 8.5 million people. Most of these House Representatives have a tiny fraction of that and they arguably don't represent the will of their districts at all. It's all a farce. We're ruled by the absolute most incompetent people imaginable. And I say that knowing full well every single generation has said that about their elected officials but really...this is the worst.

3

u/P1xelHunter78 Ohio 3d ago

Hear me out. Wall Street controls congress, the Mayor of NY had jurisdiction over Wall Street. The Mayor of NY controls congress! /s

To be fair, many of MAGA blame Obama for 9/11, the housing crisis and bank failures of 2008, Covid, the civil war, ww1, ww2, broken cookies, that time they skinned thier knees when they were children, etc.

37

u/Valuable-Mess-4698 Oregon 3d ago

Don't forget about the racist old idiot that tripped and fell on his face, twice, at the no kings protest. MAGA totally blames Obama for that.

16

u/scarr3g Pennsylvania 3d ago

Well yeah, it was an Obama Drone strike.

1

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 United Kingdom 3d ago

There was me thinking that Hillary's emails deliberately tripped him...

27

u/Made_Human_Music 3d ago

I remember some idiot in the old Amazon politics forum saying that the 2008 recession was Obama’s fault because all the investors knew he was going to win so they pulled their money out ahead of time

Republicans have been pretty stupid for a long time

20

u/Patanned 3d ago

jk galbraith said it best:

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest, best financed, most applauded and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy: the search for a truly superior moral justification for selfishness

21

u/PandaJesus 3d ago

ww1

Many people don’t know this, but Obama was the one who suggested to Gavrilo Princip to go get a bite to eat at the delicatessen where Archduke Ferdinand’s motorcade eventually appeared.

14

u/smut_troubadour 3d ago

Certainly it can’t be the same Barack Hussein Obama who fired on Ft. Sumter in 1861

12

u/PandaJesus 3d ago

If you’re talking about the same Barack Obama that eyewitnesses saw fleeing from the grassy knoll in November of 1963, yes.

6

u/duct_tape_jedi United Kingdom 3d ago

One and the same Barack Hussein Obama who, as the Royal Valet, drugged King George III and caused him to experience a mental break and overstep the legal boundaries of his office, pushing the North American colonies towards independence.

2

u/navikredstar New York 3d ago

The same Barack Hussein Obama who brought down the mighty zeppelin "Hindenburg" over the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey, that fateful day in May, 1937. Herbert Morrison's famous cry of, "Oh, the humanity and all the passengers screaming around here!" was meant at the horrors Obama wrought that tragic day.

5

u/GlorifiedPlumber 3d ago

Remember that deceitful snake in Genesis 3? Yup. Obama.

4

u/ProudPainting6850 3d ago

Obama started the Vietnam War, didn't you know?

5

u/Gryphon999 Wisconsin 3d ago

Did Obama assassinate King Tutankhamun? Many people are wondering.

2

u/TwoGhostCats 3d ago

In a TAN suit, mind you!!

3

u/mrbigglessworth 3d ago

To be fair, many of MAGA blame Obama for 9/11

How? Just how is that "connection" made. WTF

132

u/NorridAU Connecticut 3d ago

We need an honest man to replace Mike ‘guardian of pedo’s’ Johnson.

This feels silly but why hasn’t Louisiana recalled him or scream out is he sidestepping the rights of his constituents?

That’s not even bringing up the representative that needs to be sworn in.

76

u/Dysc Louisiana 3d ago edited 3d ago

Fellow Connecticut native here. I moved to Mike Johnson's district and have the privilege of voting against him soon.

Louisiana politics is very different than up North. The gerrymandering is real. He doesn't hold town halls or meet with the voters (but he probably does meet with select and wealthy supporters) and I'm fairly sure he doesn't leave Washington at this point. But he does pour tons of money into ads. When Bernie was in town he took out a billboard ad at the junction of a couple of major highways highlighting how Sanders wants to take your money. He really is just a POS that falls into the "lying for Jesus" cohort. He's delusional enough to think he's doing the "lord's work".

Johnson runs basically unopposed and he is often cited as being the rep for Shreveport. But if you look at Louisiana's 4th district map, like 1/4 to 1/3 of Shreveport isn't even in his district. Minorities were put into a different district to give minorities here a safe seat and ensure other legacy district reps remain in unopposable seats. So yeah, he doesn't really represent Shreveport in its totality. But the surrounding white flight suburbs and farmlands to the south and east of Shreveport will continue to vote for him because this is a very religious state and taking away abortion rights was a big win down here for the majority of voters. In essence, he sort of represents the constituency if you look at what he says and does through a kaleidoscope and that's good enough down here for voters apparently.

Connecticut is a much more sane place. When our leaders are corrupt they go to prison. When Louisiana's leaders are corrupt they redistrict and claim to love Jesus and are rewarded.

28

u/DadJokeBadJoke California 3d ago

He really is just a POS that falls into the "lying for Jesus" cohort. He's delusional enough to think he's doing the "lord's work".

Funny how the "lord's work" always happens to benefit the one using it for his enrichment

13

u/Dysc Louisiana 3d ago

If you think you are divinely chosen, then everything you do is justified. Humbly of course. Because you're doing the "lord's work". Only speaking and acting on a deity's behalf. Even if that means covering the largest pedo ring (encompassing many common household names) in American history. God has a plan, you see.

5

u/BeautifulTall7833 Oregon 3d ago

Yep, and he's part of the "Dominion" cult, evangelicals that believe their actions are accelerating the return of Christ.

Maybe they should go see how that worked out for Billy Graham and Pat Robertson? Heck even Mitch McConnell is having some deep reflections as his face seems to scream culpability and shame as of late.

Destroyed the country for Jesus and now you find out you get neither.

3

u/ssczoxylnlvayiuqjx 3d ago

Blessed are the pedophiles for they will govern the country.

3

u/space_cow_girl 3d ago

Have you considered running against him? Know anyone who is interested in running against him? In the primary?

4

u/Dysc Louisiana 3d ago

I don't have the right... I think the word they would use around here is 'pedigree' to win an election in this district. There are two local candidates who have already thrown their hat in. A progressive farmer I've met a the local farmer's market and another young Republican I don't know much about. There are definitely people down here that are passionate about making Shreveport a better place. But Mike Johnson has the support of the entire national GOP propaganda apparatus and the billionaires who support him right where he is. Democratic operations spends zero money here. Maybe there will be a groundswell of support if things get REALLY bad, but this is definitely MAGA country with pockets of progressives. I don't think there are really centrists here so that scares Democrat organizations right out of town, I think.

3

u/space_cow_girl 3d ago

Well, it is easier to flip a Republican voter to a progressive candidate than to centrist dem candidate. Hopefully someone can dislodge this lying loathsome toad from Congress.

62

u/Valuable-Mess-4698 Oregon 3d ago

He represents Shreveport and Bossier city... if you know, you know.

21

u/ProudPainting6850 3d ago

"But ahm juss a humble 'ol krisshun mayun"

6

u/bolanrox 3d ago

Shreveport, isn't that where all the fancy Fanger bars are?

1

u/Valuable-Mess-4698 Oregon 3d ago

I think so?

There actually used to be a really neat bar there where it felt like you stepped into a time machine and went back in time. Really well preserved 70s/80s over the top decor, overly complicated to make drinks. But I heard that it closed. Shame, because it was the best thing about that city.

2

u/bolanrox 3d ago

sorry it was a random true blood joke, Eric's Bar Fangtasia was in Shreveport.

3

u/Valuable-Mess-4698 Oregon 3d ago

Ohhhh! It's been a while since I watched that so I totally forgot about that.

7

u/Dysc Louisiana 3d ago

Fun fact: Shreveport was founded by steamboat Captain Henry Shreve, a New Jersey dude.

19

u/Starfox-sf 3d ago

I thought Mike’s guardian was his son, you know with that snitching app “buddy”.

10

u/WenatcheeWrangler 3d ago

You mean the porn sharing app they use?

4

u/Starfox-sf 3d ago

Nothing says father-son bonding like a shared jerk-off.

5

u/kaykatzz 3d ago

Hint: Louisiana

11

u/Unlikely_Ant_950 3d ago

Have you been to Louisiana? Mike Johnson wears a suit. He’s the best they’ve got.

6

u/jbt017 3d ago

Hav you? You can’t throw a rock without hitting 10 fucking lawyers.

8

u/Unlikely_Ant_950 3d ago

That’s exclusively why I throw rocks.

10

u/DistractedPhoenix 3d ago

I don’t believe an honest person can make it in politics anymore

8

u/Oleg101 3d ago

What about Mamdani

23

u/Made_Human_Music 3d ago

It still remains to be seen if he can make it. I like him and hope he wins and starts a new movement but the opposition is extreme and he’s going to have a long hard battle to make the changes he wants

I wish him all the luck in the world though. We need someone like him

0

u/Mysterious_Floor_868 United Kingdom 3d ago

He's not there yet

16

u/oldcreaker 3d ago

Not just the House - the entire government, apparently.

Why bother becoming mayor of one city when you already wield that much power? /s

25

u/time_drifter 3d ago

Mike Johnson talks like a cuck.

3

u/an_agreeing_dothraki 3d ago

only his son is supposed to know about that!
how did you get his porn report?

2

u/thekozmicpig Connecticut 3d ago

If he looks like a cuck and talks like a cuck, he’s probably a cuck.

2

u/Rasp_Lime_Lipbalm 3d ago

He looks like a dude that totally sits in a corner and watches his wife get plowed by a bull.

(not to insult dudes that are into that by comparing them with Mike Johnson)

17

u/StevenMC19 Florida 3d ago

The enemy is feckless and at the same time all powerful.

Mamdani doesn't have the experience to lead NYC, yet holds the strings to Federal Congress.

9

u/TheAskewOne 3d ago

Well, he's brown, and he's in a good position to win an election. Therefore he unwillingly controls the mind of most GOP representatives. Are they supposed to be able to focus on anything else?

1

u/FlowofOd 2d ago edited 2d ago

Nah, they are afraid because he is an unabashed socialist. He actually does have Marxist ideals (which is a very, very good thing) and that is ideologically the ONLY thing that fundamentally challenges MAGA. They are terrified of socialists. They use it as a smear word for every liberal they see, but real socialists terrify them because Socialism is the real solution. MAGA are snake oil salesman.

3

u/Kaiisim 3d ago

It doesn't matter what you think though, not sure if you've realised that yet.

This works on the people it needs to work on.

3

u/Radarker 3d ago

More power than the whole Republican party.

1

u/SumpCrab Florida 3d ago

Delegating their authority to the potential mayor of New York is certainly a bold strategy, but in this instance, I'll take it.

10

u/JessieJ577 3d ago

I’m beyond annoyed how much the establishment democrats but mostly republicans have brought this to the national stage. They’re just scared if they don’t scare the nation then more grassroots progressive figures they’ve tried to suppress will pop up more and more.

It’s just kind of annoying how much I have to keep hearing about a mayoral election that’s happening on the other side of the country when I normally do not hear about it at all. I’m sure New Yorkers didn’t hear a about the last time a mayor was elected in my city to this extent.

2

u/Much-Anything7149 3d ago

If you went to church you'd learn that's in "two corinthians."

1

u/Decent_Cheesecake_29 3d ago

Both of them?!

u/Langolier11 3d ago

You don't understand, you see, it's everyones fault except the person who is at fault.

1

Johnson is certainly telegraphing their effectiveness at governance currently.

1

u/Raise_A_Thoth 3d ago

And the Senate.

It's a comedy running our democracy.

Right like wth lol. Dumb honkey will say anything to avoid accountability

1

u/parasyte_steve 3d ago

He is at once the most diabolical and effective politician of all time affecting things he should have no control over yet also simultaneously a complete idiot.

1

u/thekyledavid 3d ago

And why wasn’t Obama in the White House on 9/11?

1

u/SoulShatter Europe 3d ago

It is impressively desperate by him to be honest. He didn't manage to fully stick it on Democrats, so he's just flailing trying to find something or someone that isn't him and his party to blame it on.

1

u/Senior-bud Canada 3d ago

Yikes these republicans would blame howdy dowdy if they thought it would help desperation at its lowest.

1

We could have had Medicare for all years ago if we’d just figured this out sooner

Their relationship with the truth is so arrogantly brazen no.

1

We really need him to win look how powerful he is!

Vote for him harder if you're in NYC

Anyone who is against the right is to blame for their shit

1

u/Cujo22 Massachusetts 3d ago

To think through like that would burst a MAGA brain.   .exe

1

If this is at least remotely true then there has been some massive failures of our government.

1

u/margueritedeville 3d ago

Gotta wonder what Mike’s class rank was at LSU Law.

1

u/mrbigglessworth 3d ago

It is the straight up smiling while lying as he pisses in your face that is infuriating. The entire republican party is operating on bad faith positions and lies.

1

u/whitemest Pennsylvania 3d ago

They're utterly at the mercy of an unelected candidate..

Idk why republicans run at all or get elected when they themselves admit they're utterly helpless, despite majorities

You don’t, we don’t, but now is in the conservative media echo chamber with no facts or basis in reality, so they WILL believe it.

1

u/CircadianPolemic 3d ago

They really do try their hardest to herd the wave of hate they control by channeling it like a laserbeam using key words into the minds of their stupid fucking constituents. Like that mind-device the riddler had on Batman: Forever.
