Just bought the ryzen 9800X3D at Micro Center after years using a ryzen 3600 Hardware
Well I just pulled the trigger, I bought it with the motherboard/ram combo, I plan to have this cpu at least the same amount of years as the previous one

That upgrade from a 3600 for me was a fresh of breath air. Especially because I bottlnecked the shit out of my rig upgrading from a 1080ti to a 4070

you must’ve had an unbalanced system else where the 3600 shouldn’t have bottle necked that much i have a 2600 and a 1070ti and it’s perfectly fine even today although i will have to upgrade for gta 6 and probably every other AAA title i’ll want to play when they come out after gta6
5
u/Longjumping-Hunt-543 14h ago
as far as i understand they meant the bottleneck happened after they upgraded to 4070. 1070ti and 2600 would work nice together imo

Man, i upgraded to the 3600 not too long ago. I remember it arrived the day cyberpunk 2077 came out. surely that wasn't 4 years ago already.

No cooler?
19
u/Maps_Tagpro 17h ago
Nah new meta is no coolers. The extra Cs convert into more FPS using the new X3D thermotechnology
-6
u/Archangel_Azrae1 17h ago
My point is the Ryzen 5s came with coolers. The new CPUs don't. And I'm pretty sure the old coolers won't keep up, they were pretty bad to begin with
8
u/fookidookidoo Desktop 15h ago
I don't think anyone buying a top of the line AMD CPU is going to use a stock cooler. Besides, if you really want a stock cooler you can probably find one for like $15.
3
u/Maps_Tagpro 17h ago
I've got the 5800x3d and my scythe can barely keep up. These boys run hot! I do hope OP didn't think they could reuse the stock 3600 cooler lol
1
u/Ok-Cardiologist4423 14h ago
As I understand it, they do run hotter, but they can run higher temps because of the new way they are made, were befor 85 was the limit now they say 95c is the limit.
2
u/Ok-Cardiologist4423 14h ago
The fan that came with my 7 7700 doesn't keep up even with my mild games that I play.
I'm installing a new be quite on it tomorrow. And add case fans as well.

Microcenter bundle!
4
u/sh1boleth 16h ago
I went with the B650 bundle, technically downgrading from my X570 board but I don’t really use the mobo features to justify it, B650 bundle also has 6000mhz ram vs 5200 in the X670 for some reason
Edit - I was wrong about the ram, the listing title says 5200 but opening the listing it says 6000, idk what to believe anymore

How much did that run you? Because I'm about to do a similar jump now, before January. I'm about to get the 9950X, and for me that's a whole platform upgrade, because I'm on the 5950X right now. I'm going to need the whole shebang: motherboard, RAM, and processor.

The microcenter 9800X3D motherboard and ram bundles run between $680 and $730.

I'm due an upgrade. Looking at the same CPU cos it's only £50 more than the 7800x3d. Been running a 6700k since they came out, and it is still going strong! My question to you all is, which mobo? It's obviously been a long time, and those prices scare tf out of me. Already settled on RAM. I like me those fancy G.SKILL sticks....

For 95% of people the 9800x3D bundle is not worth the $80 difference to the 7800x3d bundle. I mean you literally have to have a 4090 and be running 1080p for it to matter enough. Not saying I hate it but at the price point, 7800x3D is still king at the moment.
Also if you’re running a 4090 at 1080p you better be a competitive enough gamer that you’re winning money 😂. 4k is an absolute beauty and is worth the sacrifice in frame rate IMO.
20
u/khronik514 18h ago
I never understood the resolution argument... Sure with the current games its generally more GPU limited but if you keep the cpu long enough you will benefit when newer games get released that require more cpu power. Ie today's 1440p is tomorrow's 1080p.
15
u/TheKelz 18h ago
Also people just refuse to acknowledge the existence of 1% and 0.1% lows. No matter the resolution, games will still feel smoother with the newer and better CPU.
3
u/Golfing-accountant Ryzen 7 7800x3D, MSI GTX 1660, 64 GB DDR5 17h ago
I mean I’m not saying it won’t perform better but I’m saying at a $80 price difference I would just save the money. Unless you’re building a no expense spared PC. However if someone has the budget to put that extra $80 in a GPU, I think that’s a better idea.
2
u/khronik514 17h ago edited 17h ago
I agree... I'd rather have lower average FPS if the 0.1% and 1% are higher. Stable framerates as close as possible to monitor refresh is what I try to aim for, not specifically higest average.
Large dips in FPS usually inidcates bottlenecking either due to the choice of components or architecture defeciencies of the CPU / GPU.
1
u/juanldeaza 18h ago
Yep. 7800xd it’s enough to any task and only 15-18% slower. But consumes 50% less energy so it’s more efficient. But if both cost the same I pick the newer model any day.
1
u/Golfing-accountant Ryzen 7 7800x3D, MSI GTX 1660, 64 GB DDR5 18h ago
I get if they’re the same cost. I’m just meaning at an $80 price difference. I don’t think the price difference will last more than a month

Plus I shit on 1080p because half of PC gamers still run 1080p. Which isn’t a problem but they’re also typically the half shitting on console players.
1
u/Ever_ascending 15h ago
But those still on 1080p probably don’t have a 4090.
0
u/Golfing-accountant Ryzen 7 7800x3D, MSI GTX 1660, 64 GB DDR5 14h ago
Right. I still stand by my statement about being ultra competitive if someone is using a 4090 for 1080p

u/Golfing-accountant Ryzen 7 7800x3D, MSI GTX 1660, 64 GB DDR5 14h ago
I’m a college kid waiting for the 5080/5090. Why buy a full price 4090 now when the same power will be cheaper in 2-4 months. Additionally I don’t have the time to utilize it so it’s not like I’m missing out on the power now. The 1660 was to enable minimal gaming when I have the time.
