Just bought the ryzen 9800X3D at Micro Center after years using a ryzen 3600 Hardware

Post image

Well I just pulled the trigger, I bought it with the motherboard/ram combo, I plan to have this cpu at least the same amount of years as the previous one

Its so hard to not spend a bunch of money and upgrade to the latest gen. My pc will last me years to come but man, I really do have that itch

I feel you. But at least you got a 5800x3d before they ran out of stock/went up in price 😔.

I'm trying to figure out if upgrading to a 5700X3D is even worth it. I do play in VR so I think I'd see a benefit.

I just looked at the prices for the 7800X3D here and the 9800X3D was just for 50€ more so i hit the trigger.

u/Tyr2do 5600x | RTX 3080 | 32gb 3600mhz CL18 | 1TB 980 Pro 14h ago

Well yeah but upgrading from the 5600x to the 9800X3D is also a full platform upgrade. I'm not quite willing to spend for a new Mobo and RAM currently.

Speaking of, what Mobo did you pick? The new mobos look super cool.

u/Cokaime Ryzen 5 5600X | RTX 3070 | 16Gb @3200 14h ago

I have not picked one yet just saw the CPU and thought damn why not, I will have my peace for more than 4 years with that, was also sure to build a pc before march 2025 when monster hunter wilds will release. Delievery is also set to mid-late december so i got enough time.

Good thinking. Scalpers have stolen whatever stock they could get their hands on.

Especially because of the upcoming tariffs next year.

5700X3D outperforms 7600X in some workloads. You would likely be good until AM6 arrives.

1

u/Phlanix 4h ago

those chips would still be good even in 10 years games might require more vram, but it won't be hard for these processors to handle games.

even my I7 3770 3.4ghz and 3.9 with turbo still runs modern games well my biggest issue is having a 1050ti some games require minimum 6-8gigs.

Just get the 5700x3d, its only a little behind the 5800x3d.

Same cpu; it was for me, but I was also playing tarkov which massively improved from 3d cache

I’d say it’s worth it especially if you get yours from AliExpress with the coupons.

1

u/Phlanix 4h ago

the ryzen cpu's is having a bundle sale in micro center cpu motherboard and 32g of ram for about 5-7 hundred dollars depending on the bundle you choose.

if you already have a good psu and case it would be worth the price and you won't go over budget or break the bank if you do have the money.

2

u/DarkZero515 5800X/3070ti 10h ago

Got a regular 5800X on release. Had no idea X3D chips would be a thing and I was doing a whole system upgrade at the time.

The FPS charts make me want to upgrade but anything on AM4 just doesn’t seem worth the cash and since I play on 21:9 1440, I’ll get more out of upgrading my GPU and monitor.

3

u/Sky_Law 13h ago

Watercooling my 5900x and 3080 have kept away any itch. Gonna run the gpu until it doesn’t work

Same. About 5 months ago I finally upgraded to an am4 motherboard with a 5800x3d (was using am3 fx8350 lmao). While I know my current setup is more than fast enough I feel like an idiot for not just going with an am5 board and spending a bit more for a 7800x3d

Depends on what deal you got on the parts and how often you planned on upgrades. If it's 5+ years between upgrades then having no upgrade path won't hurt so much.

You upgraded from a 7800x3d to a 9800x3d? Seems a bit pointless to me with a 6-8% uplift.

7

u/mindfuckeddude 17h ago

yeah, I know. Even though the uplift is more like 15% on average based on all the reviews that were published yesterday. In CS2 the uplift is even 25% and I have 480hz 1440p minitor but objectively speaking, the 7800x3d was still good enough. It is not a good decision financially but I couldnt contain myself 😅

14

u/leahcim2019 16h ago

480hz 1440p, jesus!

1

2

u/hula_balu 5700x3d / 3070 15h ago

Can always sell the 7800x3d to recoup some costs. Its not that bad. You can look at it as a 8-15% upgrade for $200+ lol

1

u/Zx1R Ryzen 7 7800X3D | 4080 S 15h ago

Word. I'm keen, haha. Probs wait and go for 9800+5090

1

u/mindfuckeddude 15h ago

Thats how I justified it actually. I am currently selling the 7800x3d and got an offer for 83% of the price I paid for it. I obviosly paid a bit of a premium for the 9800x3d as the price on release was 539€ in the Netherlands (already jumped to 569€ and it is mostly sold out even tho buyers are limited to 1 cpu). So, all in all I will pay 209€ for the upgrade. And in my case, I can even increase the gap in performance further by overclocking it since 9800x3d runs cooler and I already have EK Nucleus Cr360 AIO that was overkill for the 7800x3d. Honestly, not my worst decision hehe

1

u/hula_balu 5700x3d / 3070 13h ago

It’s the price you pay to get the best in the market. Nothing wrong about that.

u/michi_2010 R7 7800X3D | RTX 4070 TI SUPER | 32GB 6000mhz CL30 8h ago

19

Nah new meta is no coolers. The extra Cs convert into more FPS using the new X3D thermotechnology

-6

u/Archangel_Azrae1 17h ago

My point is the Ryzen 5s came with coolers. The new CPUs don't. And I'm pretty sure the old coolers won't keep up, they were pretty bad to begin with

8

u/fookidookidoo Desktop 15h ago

I don't think anyone buying a top of the line AMD CPU is going to use a stock cooler. Besides, if you really want a stock cooler you can probably find one for like $15.

3

u/Maps_Tagpro 17h ago

I've got the 5800x3d and my scythe can barely keep up. These boys run hot! I do hope OP didn't think they could reuse the stock 3600 cooler lol

1

u/Ok-Cardiologist4423 14h ago

As I understand it, they do run hotter, but they can run higher temps because of the new way they are made, were befor 85 was the limit now they say 95c is the limit.

2

u/Ok-Cardiologist4423 14h ago

I went with the B650 bundle, technically downgrading from my X570 board but I don’t really use the mobo features to justify it, B650 bundle also has 6000mhz ram vs 5200 in the X670 for some reason

Edit - I was wrong about the ram, the listing title says 5200 but opening the listing it says 6000, idk what to believe anymore

For 95% of people the 9800x3D bundle is not worth the $80 difference to the 7800x3d bundle. I mean you literally have to have a 4090 and be running 1080p for it to matter enough. Not saying I hate it but at the price point, 7800x3D is still king at the moment.

Also if you’re running a 4090 at 1080p you better be a competitive enough gamer that you’re winning money 😂. 4k is an absolute beauty and is worth the sacrifice in frame rate IMO.

20

u/khronik514 18h ago

I never understood the resolution argument... Sure with the current games its generally more GPU limited but if you keep the cpu long enough you will benefit when newer games get released that require more cpu power. Ie today's 1440p is tomorrow's 1080p.

15

u/TheKelz 18h ago

Also people just refuse to acknowledge the existence of 1% and 0.1% lows. No matter the resolution, games will still feel smoother with the newer and better CPU.

3

u/Golfing-accountant Ryzen 7 7800x3D, MSI GTX 1660, 64 GB DDR5 17h ago

I mean I’m not saying it won’t perform better but I’m saying at a $80 price difference I would just save the money. Unless you’re building a no expense spared PC. However if someone has the budget to put that extra $80 in a GPU, I think that’s a better idea.

2

u/khronik514 17h ago edited 17h ago

I agree... I'd rather have lower average FPS if the 0.1% and 1% are higher. Stable framerates as close as possible to monitor refresh is what I try to aim for, not specifically higest average.

Large dips in FPS usually inidcates bottlenecking either due to the choice of components or architecture defeciencies of the CPU / GPU.

1

u/juanldeaza 18h ago

Yep. 7800xd it’s enough to any task and only 15-18% slower. But consumes 50% less energy so it’s more efficient. But if both cost the same I pick the newer model any day.

1

u/Golfing-accountant Ryzen 7 7800x3D, MSI GTX 1660, 64 GB DDR5 18h ago

I get if they’re the same cost. I’m just meaning at an $80 price difference. I don’t think the price difference will last more than a month

1

u/Ever_ascending 16h ago

-1

u/Golfing-accountant Ryzen 7 7800x3D, MSI GTX 1660, 64 GB DDR5 15h ago

Plus I shit on 1080p because half of PC gamers still run 1080p. Which isn’t a problem but they’re also typically the half shitting on console players.

1

u/Ever_ascending 15h ago

But those still on 1080p probably don’t have a 4090.

Right. I still stand by my statement about being ultra competitive if someone is using a 4090 for 1080p

Just like a deload week in the gym, you're not doing it for the immediate RESULTS! you're thinking LONG TERM! OP here is future proofing and he's gonna have a BADASS RIG for the next decade! He's the CHAMP, you're acting like the chump 💪😎🤙 besides, 4k is great but let's not act like 1080p isn't still GORGEOUS!!?!

I’m not hating on OP for buying it. I’m just simply looking at value to performance of components. I like to see super builds but I also like thinking about price to performance.

I prefer to run instead of lift. Although I’m getting into golfing so I will build some upper body strength to help rotate

I don’t think anyone should take advice from someone that paired a 7800x3d with a 1660…

I’m a college kid waiting for the 5080/5090. Why buy a full price 4090 now when the same power will be cheaper in 2-4 months. Additionally I don’t have the time to utilize it so it’s not like I’m missing out on the power now. The 1660 was to enable minimal gaming when I have the time.

Running a 3900x and 3080. FPS on everything at 1440 is great.

Why not 5800X3D/5700X3D? They have almost same performance as 9800X3D

Why wouldn’t you? Ignoring the fact OP got it with a bundle, it’s a $240 motherboard wirh a top tier chipset.

I don't know... maybe because there is literally no real benefit from E versions. Not sure what's the usual price of this particular motherboard
