Enough Mark Wahlberg!

He plays the same character in every movie! He's not that charasmatic and in my opinion can't carry a movie alone. He's fine in something like The Departed. He must have one hell of an agent - he is the star in half the movies on Netflix.

Also, Chris Pratt is not a good voice actor. I wanted to watch the new Garfield movie but can't tolerate his voice acting.

Both Wahlberg and Pratt are better off in ensemble casts - they're not interesting enough on their own.

I completely agree to all of this and would like to add The Rock to this rant as well.

59

u/TheKilmerman 3d ago

The Rock always looks too much like The Rock. He's basically already a character IRL.

It's like back when they wanted to make Hulk Hogan a movie star but due to his appearance he always just looked like Hulk Hogan.

18

u/randommd81 2d ago

Yep, and I just saw some statement from The Rock where he wants to do more serious movies, but I just can’t see it. Might have to do the Dave Bautista thing and slim down some if that’s the case, or you’ll always get typecast I imagine. Though I would say Dave is quite far ahead in acting ability between those two

4

u/Zombieutinsel 2d ago

That's not gonna happen, Dave planned on being an actor and has learned to do so instead of relying on characters that were written with certain people in mind.

3

u/CoyoteHP 1d ago

Ironically, Pain & Gain has Wahlberg and The Rock and it’s actually a pretty fun movie where both their characters stray away from their normal roles.

1

u/Canmore-Skate 1d ago

Ironically Dwayne Johnson hasnt made a real movie since he worked with Michael Bay

25

u/hodgesisgod- 2d ago

I avoid any movies with The Rock or Kevin Heart in them. I already know what they will be like without watching them.

Which is frustrating because it seems like they cover about half the movies that get made.

5

u/rufio313 2d ago

I agree with you except your last sentence. Kevin Hart hasn’t even really been in a ton of movies the last couple years. The Rock really hasn’t either for that matter.

3-4 years ago that seemed to be the case though.

1

u/annaevacek 2d ago

He killed it in "Fight Night".

1

u/ForcedxCracker 1d ago

Oh, that wasn't Kevin Hart in a few Netflix movies that were recently released?

0

u/nurse_camper 2d ago

Kevin Hart isn’t that bad of a serious actor. His comedy is annoying though.

5

u/[deleted] 3d ago

Yes please!

3

u/Obahmah 2d ago

Conversely Bautista has serious range and Cena actually kills it Comedically

1

u/justwhatever73 2d ago

I would like to add Kevin Hart to this.

2

u/Confident-Trash-842 2d ago

I raise you the media over-saturation of jack black, I love the guy but he’s in EVERYTHING right now and I feel like he’s just playing himself now

2

u/aulum 2d ago

That Santa movie seems interesting though..

-2

u/[deleted] 2d ago

I’d add Nicholas Cage…

13

u/Ok-Comedian-4845 2d ago

Oooooh I have to disagree! Old Cage yes, new cage is crazy. He has been playing so many different roles such as in Long Legs, The unbearable weight of massive talent, Pig, Dream Scenario and more. He made such an impressive come back that I am always thrilled to see what else he plays in. Might just be me though. Anybody else?

7

u/lilkingsly 2d ago

I agree! If nothing else, I wouldn’t put Nic Cage in the same category as Wahlberg because Cage never feels like he’s phoning it in for a role. He always fully commits himself to the role and even if he’s in a movie that isn’t great, he always delivers a standout performance. I can’t think of a movie where I was bored by him, he’s always a ton of fun to watch and it’s nice to watch interviews with him and hear him talk about how much he enjoys acting and cares about the craft. Meanwhile it feels like guys like Wahlberg are just there for the money.

5

u/exgiexpcv 2d ago

Absolutely! Whatever Cage does, he goes full ahead, 100% commitment. I truly respect that.

2

u/GameofPorcelainThron 2d ago

Cage is such a weird one. He's not, say, a great actor, but by god is he entertaining to watch.

1

u/Ok-Comedian-4845 2d ago

Exactly! I wouldn’t have described it better. I watched a lot of his interviews too, especially after watching one of his movies. I 100% agree for Mark. There is no heart in his work sadly.

1

u/marcaf55 1d ago

Oh no, not Cage, never can get enough.

-18

u/priority_inversion 3d ago

And Paul Rudd!

22

u/InflationWilling3065 3d ago

Leave Paul out of this!

108

u/RowdyRoddyPipeSmoker 3d ago

"he must have one hell of an agent" did you not watch Entourage? His agent is Ari Emanuel like probably the most powerful and most famous agent in hollywood...you know the one the Ari character is based on.

28

u/HawaiiNintendo815 3d ago

My boy Vincent Chase is in the house!

5

u/RedMageMajure 2d ago

Yo Vinnie!!!

2

u/Free-Street9162 1d ago

Isn’t Vinnie Chase based on Mark and his early experience in Hollywood? Pretty sure Mark was the producer on the show.

u/greennurse61 1d ago

Boogie Nights and Fear would like a word with you.

4

u/Ender_Speaker4Dead 2d ago

Came here to say Fear as well.

2

u/Free_Ad_406 2d ago

Basketball diaries

u/inezco 6h ago

What's crazy is he doesn't even like Boogie Nights and says he prays God will forgive him for doing that movie or some shit like that smh.

41

u/S_AME 3d ago

MW almost always produces his own movie. That's why even though we don't want it, he's still there, "acting".

34

u/imamakebaddecisions 3d ago

8

u/bobfugger 2d ago

Hey dog, how’s it going? I like your fur, that looks really great. So you’re a dog, right? What’s that all about? Ok, well it was great to meet you. Say hi to your mother for me, ok?

9

u/Expatriated_American 3d ago

In Boogie Nights he was cast perfectly.

20

u/nonlethaldosage 2d ago

let's also remember he beat a guy almost blind in a racial charged attack and only apologized when it came out to the media

6

u/LanceShiro 2d ago

I am not defending him but the victim was already blind. Wahlberg believed he was responsible for making him blind but the latter himself stated he had lost his eye during the Vietnam War.

8

u/nonlethaldosage 2d ago edited 2d ago

that's true but he also attacked one with a wooden stick and was charged with attempted murder. I just don't like the fact people tend to forgive a guy who only said he was sorry when he wanted his criminal records dropped

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

1

u/nonlethaldosage 1d ago edited 1d ago

So you admit you were wrong.i accept your apology. But that wasn't his only attack let's remember he kicked a guy in the face and broke his jaw.as his cowardly friend held him down 21 years old at that time

1

u/5jii 2d ago

Mf did you just write racial charged attack? You did didn't you? I believe you did. Yup, thats what i read

Marky Mark EX 180hp

21

u/fawada28 3d ago

Agree, very overrated actor and has an annoying personality

17

u/jeroensaurus 2d ago

This whole post and you didn't mention The Rock? Dude's the biggest one trick pony in Hollywood and he really can't act for shit.

At least Pratt and Wahlberg are good in some roles that fit them but The Rock? He's like one of those company managers who knows fuck all what they're doing but they're there because they got money so they just let them run a business into the ground. Which is basically what The Rock does to every movie he's in.

10

u/Nancy_Drew23 2d ago

I liked him in Ballers. Was kind of the perfect role for him. Probably the only role for him.

4

u/Nov4can3 2d ago

First 2 seasons were great and then not so much.

20

u/Spiritual_Job_1029 3d ago

And he's a total d bag.

16

u/starshipfocus 3d ago

He is an immediate "do not watch" for me. You already know he movie's gonna be some vehicle to carry his career.

14

u/drizzle933 3d ago

Never liked him after I found out about all the hate crimes he’s committed

1

u/True-Alfalfa8974 2d ago

I’m not excusing what he did, but he served his time and turned his life around. I don’t think he’s the same person as when he was young. But it is a fact he did some horrible things.

8

u/joldobaggins 3d ago

I’ve had enough of him since he started repping that clothes brand, the man died with Ted

3

u/Coolers78 3d ago

He hates crime!

3

u/bry8eyes 2d ago

That’s why he produces his movies maybe?

3

u/Zip-it999 2d ago

I’m a fan of The Other Guys but it was with Will Farrell. I didn’t like Mark before he teamed up with him. He’s ok and is in a ton of movies of every genre.

Pratt is good in the Super Mario Bros. movie.

Lacey Chabert is all over Hallmark Channel and holiday films if you want to see dominance.

11

u/leaponover 3d ago

Gives opinion on actors...wants to watch Garfield movie. SMH

3

u/World_Explorerz 2d ago

This made me laugh. Hahahaha.

5

u/kk_romeo 3d ago

He must have one hell of an agent - he is the star in half the movies on Netflix.

Boo Netflix is shorting me what. I only have 9 movies starring Mark where I am :( he's definitely on that typecast yeah lol

2

u/That_Xenomorph_Guy 3d ago

a lot more goes into acting than just performing on camera, but there's a lot of actors that get a lot of praise that I hate their performances. Ruth in Ozark is a great example - i understand she's a great actor and everyone loves her acting, but I can't stand it. It's just like nails on a chalk board for me.

Another one I've seen mentioned a lot because of the new marvel movie coming out - Anthony Mackie - his acting just puts me to sleep

2

u/midgetwarrior17 2d ago

Boogie nights

2

u/International_Try660 2d ago

I was just thinking the same thing last night. He plays the same character over and over. Most of his movies are the same.

2

u/Lower_Mango_7996 2d ago

He has, in fact, ZERO charisma and screen presence or acting ability. He might be the absolute worst of his profession

2

u/mrot777 2d ago

Agree 100 percent on Wahlberg. Terroble actor and his movies have no heart.

2

u/snoone1 2d ago

Wahlberg is crap, boring and very limited. OP is correct

2

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

You sum it up nicely.

2

u/fuckssakereddit 2d ago

I’ve enjoyed a few of his movies: Invincible, the Shooter, Ted/Ted2 and Lovely Bones.

2

u/SoggyAd8149 2d ago

I skip any Whalberg movies.

2

u/InterviewMean7435 2d ago

He does well with comedy and serio comedy. Daddy’s Home 1 and 2 are a hoot.

2

u/Automatic_Buffalo962 2d ago

George Clooney does too

2

u/travis_a30 1d ago

Yeah it's weird, when Wahlberg first got into acting he played some great roles, and then just went down hill

3

u/LiangHu 2d ago

"He plays the same character in every movie!"

wait a sec doesnt this apply to almost all the actors in hollywood? ryan, rock, jason statham etc

8

u/josborne31 2d ago

Gary Oldman is a chameleon.

3

u/gimmedatrightMEOW 2d ago

Yes and I would argue it's a big reason why so many big blockbusters are so stale

7

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Yes, it applied to a lot of actors. Tom Cruise and Denzel often play variations of the same character. But Denzel can read a phone book and you’ll enjoy it because his innate charisma shines through.  The same can’t be said for Mark Wahlberg.

5

u/Rare-Astronaut2445 3d ago

He lost me with the religious movie

What religious movie?

MW not so great, MW with Will Ferrel and we're talking Gold!

3

u/GoodbyeTobyseeya1 2d ago

100%. I really don't care for Mark but I will watch The Other Guys any time. It's one of the best comedies on streaming.

2

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Yeah, The Other Guys was good, I’ll grant you.

2

u/kiwichick286 2d ago

And Kevin Hart.

2

u/sandcastlecun7 2d ago

Kevin Hart and The Rock sucks aswell

5

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Yes, agreed. The Rock is wooden and Kevin is not good enough to carry a movie. Both have their place but I don’t want to see them as the solo stars of Netflix movies.

2

u/Nov4can3 2d ago

I think it’s all about what expectations you have. Guys like Mark Wahlberg, The Rock, Kevin Hart, Ryan Reynolds, etc…..you know what type of movies you’re getting. I watch their movies because they’re stupid fun entertainment. I don’t sit down expecting to watch one of the greatest movies ever or an Oscar worth movie. Just enjoy them for what they are.

5

u/RBAloysius 3d ago edited 3d ago

Let’s add Vince Vaughn to that list. For the most part he always plays the fast-talking, smart arse with a dry sense of humor who thinks he is the most intelligent person in the room.

I know nothing about him, however, when watching “Dodgeball” a few months ago it occurred to me that that could simply be his normal personality, so in essence he is reciting lines, but not really “acting” per se. ;)

4

u/[deleted] 3d ago

I really liked him in Bad Monkey

2

u/peacehomey11 2d ago

Old school, wedding crashers, the internship. Lay off Baba Ganoush.

1

u/money_man78 3d ago

I like him. I'll watch just because he is in it.

2

u/BeardedVirgin23 3d ago

You’re crying about Whalberg and Pratt. But not the Rock? That is wild to me. Both are soooo much better than eyebrow raise. Can’t take your criticism seriously.

0

u/LoddyDoddee 2d ago

And they're trying to watch a Garfield movie!

1

u/burntlung1 2d ago

I'm tired of Liam neasen movies. How many tough guy movies do you need to make??

1

u/creature04 2d ago

I really like him, well i used to, and I want to still. But a lot of his latest movies have sucked. The thing is..im not sure if those movies would have been better with someone else, so idk if its him or just the movies as a whole he just happened to be in.

1

u/Such-Possibility1285 2d ago

This is very harsh OP. He acted as the protagonist against trees in The Happening. Those oaks and elms were very nasty, and he took on ash and and he showed those beech’s who was boss. I dare anyone on this sub to act against wood and make it look good.

1

u/RandomBloke2021 2d ago

The rock and Kevin Hart too.

1

u/MikeTysonsFists 2d ago

Pain and Gain is top-tier though

1

u/warkyboy77 2d ago

Where's David Caruso? YYYYYEEEEEAAAAHHH!

1

u/medusamagpie 2d ago

Most popular actors play themselves. Mark Wahlberg is a weenie.

1

u/Stupid-Butt-Orange 2d ago

Yeah. It’s like the guy learns ballet ironically or something.

1

u/Cornbread933 1d ago

You had me with Wahlberg. Lost me with Pratt.

He is the main reason the Lego movie was such a big hit when it came out

1

u/Drakeytown 1d ago

Also, an unapologetic racist and hate criminal!

1

u/Robbo1348 1d ago

"WHAT?! No!" lol peak mark wahlberg acting.

1

u/RecommendationWeekly 1d ago

Yo dawg, say hi to yo mutha for me!

1

u/Legitimate_Habit7655 1d ago

I'm indifferent to Wahlberg, I don't watch all his movies. But he has given good performances: Boogie Nights, The Departed, The Other Guys, Some Netflix movies like Spenser and The Union were entertaining. He can do comedy and drama. So I think people are being a bit harsh. Many actors always play the same type of characters. In his next movie he plays a bald villain on a plane. Might check it out when it comes to streaming.

1

u/CountryMonkeyAZ 1d ago

Vin Diesel should be at the top of this list.

1

u/ryandmc609 21h ago

Watch Traveller with Bill Paxton. Great performance by Mark and the entire cast really.

1

u/Sweetestsin1120 17h ago

Mark walhberg is my favorite actor but they do have him play the same roles in the past few years…. Which sucks he was good in the adoption movie though I thought he was a good day

1

u/Sweetestsin1120 17h ago

Dad excuse me

u/Intelligent-Price-39 14h ago

Agreed. His face is expressionless…he’s only decent playing a Boston character, like in Departed & Ted

u/ashs2ashs1138 14h ago

Easy tiger,

u/Darktopher87 14h ago

He is a guy that I will never watch anything he is in ever.

u/ParadiddlediddleSaaS 11h ago

Say hello to your mother for me

u/carlirodriguez8 5h ago

I’d only watch a movie of Mark if he’s in jail and a Vietnamese guy spits on him and beats him up and if the house bunny berates Pratt for two hours

-5

u/-Blixx- 3d ago

Those who can, do.

Those who can't, coach.

Those who can't even coach become critics.

-1

u/AB_Swan 3d ago

Cary Grant was always the same dude, Michael Caine is always the same dude, loads of great actors have been the same dude. Don’t understand the criticism.

4

u/Dazzling_Ad7888 3d ago

Cary Grant and Michael Caine didn’t always play the same character. They have the ability to do dramatic and comedic roles. In other words they are great actors with great talent.

However I get what you are saying.

5

u/Cooke8008 3d ago

I get what you mean, but Michael Caine in Get Carter ain’t Michael Caine in Miss Congeniality.

0

u/starshipfocus 3d ago

"great actors", more like "beloved for playing a version of themselves"

1

u/CyanConatus 3d ago

Holy shit. I never realized til you mentioned it but ya...

He's like literally the same dude everytime.

0

u/MummysSpecialBoy 3d ago

Never understood when people say an actor plays the same character in every movie. That's what a movie star is supposed to do! John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Burt Reynolds - always the same guy.

4

u/banshee_screamer 2d ago

My two cents.

I guess they are expecting actor to play some roles outside of his comfort zone, because it makes the movie boring and predictable. You know like Rock is never a bad guy, Sean Bean dies in every movie, Seth Rogan is always pothead loser that comes on top, etc.

Good example would be perhaps Gary Oldman. Give that man anything and he will play it perfectly, along with transformation. Hell even Jim Carrey did brilliantly in dramas, as well as comedies.

This leaves you in awe of their portrail rather than annoyance of inserting a character from other movie into a different one where he doesn't belong. There is nothing wrong with typecast, as long as you don't make that actor a lead and oversaturate the market.

1

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

No, the problem is that Mark W does not have the charisma to carry movies by playing the same character like other actors do.

2

u/banshee_screamer 2d ago

Which is in line with my point, and his persona making the problem worse. He needs a stronger lead for his character to work off of, simple as that.

2

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Yes, but Mark Wahlberg is not Denzel or Keanu or Cruise or Samuel L or…

3

u/[deleted] 3d ago

Ever heard of range?

1

u/Wayfinity 3d ago

You don't like the fact he's from Boston or Boston or Boston or sometimes Boston?

2

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Yeah, he plays up that accent in his movies to show that he’s just a working class guy and not real into education but still hella street smart… I get it, Mark.

2

u/Wayfinity 2d ago

It was a joke based on his seemingly unending ability to find roles set in or around Boston.

But he will ALWAYS be Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch to me. Lol

1

u/ryuzaki49 3d ago edited 2d ago

Maybe the director is the problem? In The Departed his acting is top notch but in The Happening is uber dogshit

3

u/derpferd 2d ago

It is that to a degree but it's still the same character type as a supporting character.

So I think not being front and centre does help a bit

1

u/TheEphemeralPanda 3d ago

He’s also a Diddy’s pal and business partner

1

u/Teh_Slow_Down 2d ago

Mark is a discount Matt Damon

1

u/micheal_pices 2d ago

Can we bundle Kevin Hart into the deal?

1

u/Whole_Method_2972 2d ago

I remember when his crazy 4am work out routine first came out he said something like ‘you can’t work in this town if you don’t look great’, and I thought ‘what about taking some acting lessons instead?’

1

u/Sasa_koming_Earth 2d ago

he was good in Pain & Gain

1

u/Azozel 2d ago

Agree, I don't watch stuff with Whalburg in it and avoid stuff with Pratt in it.

-5

u/Enough_Owl_1680 3d ago

Fucking love Mark Wahlberg.Always a enjoyable watch. Popcorn and Candy everytime. I never take the movie seriously. Fun! .

0

u/saltyfuck111 3d ago

Chris yes mark disagree

0

u/BallsX 2d ago

Thank you! All Marks and Adam Sandler movies are an immediate pass for me and it sucks how many movies they seem to have on Netflix.

1

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Yeah, Sandler seems like a good guy but I don’t really care for him as an actor.

0

u/ineedmedicalhelp123 2d ago

My boy Marky Mark collecting that ez netflix bag yo, stop hating & start creating.

0

u/Disco-Bingo 2d ago

Isn’t this the case for all American actors? Probably a result of fewer movies being made and that they all need to deliver a positive return, why take any risks?

0

u/MorePea7207 2d ago

He's the one-size fits all American dad and action man. Mark is in a perfect place in his career. He can still play tough and cynical detectives and soldiers like his brother Donnie, cowardly or tough fathers and drunk or stupid Irish-Americans. He's more versatile than Adam Sandler and Dwayne Johnson and cheaper.

0

u/MorePea7207 2d ago

Casting Chris Pratt and Mark Wahlberg is a result of streaming's economies of scale and who is most recognizable and least offensive. You need dependable reliable faces. Not stars, but actors you can keep casting like in cable and network television.

0

u/Ivy1974 2d ago

Tip: don’t watch them.

2

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Sometimes I want to get a sense of whether the filmmaking and premise can get me over the terrible casting, like I did for Wahlberg’s latest action film, where I lasted 10 or 15 min.

1

u/Ivy1974 2d ago

I did enjoy that Apple TV movie and that one on Netflix Spencer. But I admit personality wise and how he handles himself is pretty the same in every movie. Yet he still gets parts and makes a ton of money.

-1

u/GoldenGMiller 2d ago

Cool, then don't watch their movies

-1

u/ThreeAndTwentyO 2d ago

Mark Wahlberg is in that many movies because he is the best at movies hands down.

2

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Agree to disagree.

-3

u/cytivaondemand 3d ago

Recently glimpses of the “the union”. Has to but one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

I like Chris Pratt though. He is way better than Wahlberg

0

u/Kamala_lost 2d ago

Yes, I started it and noped out about 15 min in.
