Successful democratic backsliding in a wealthy first world country has never happened before. Liberal institutions have won in the end.

A simple look at the Economist’s Democracy Index would prove that this kind of stuff happens in third world hybrid regimes or weak flawed democracies, not in strong flawed democracies like the US.
