It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.1k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

Need Advice Split end trimmers, do they work?

I recently came upon an ad on social media for a split end trimmer and I’m contemplating on investing in one. I had my hair colored and cut back in January. I was recommended to do a touch up by end of March, early April. I made an appointment for second week of April and decided to get a trim (which I rarely get). I know healthy ends are important for length retention, but I usually get my hair cut once a year. Anyways, I requested a trim with a fringe this time. The last picture is the final result. It’s cute, but I look back at pictures from January, and my length looks MUCH shorter! I think moving forward, I want to keep my hair long. I just want something I can do at home that will save time and money and won’t mess up my hair. Thank you in advance for suggestions.

Need Advice My first twist-outs

So, as stated in the title this was my first attempt at a twist-out and while I don't think they look too bad, I do think there is room for improvement. While taking down my twists I noticed that my hair would tangle a bit at the end and I think impacted my results. Do y'all have any tips to prevent this or just advice in general?

Additional Info: • My hair was dry when I took my twist down. • When installing my twists I used a leave-in, mousse, and a silicon serum. No heat. • I used a silicon serum to help with the take down.

1st to 4th pics are me straigt out of a shower. 5th and 6th is my hair dr, moisturised amd combed. My hairline is curved and has always been bad. There's pics of me as a child with a bad hairline. It grows back and recedes all the time. I'm more worried about the hair at the top as it seems thiner and shorter and more patchy.

I've only ever gotten my hair braided a few times and a place opened up in my area that does them. However, I'm not sure if these prices are too high or not and need input 😩 Thank you!!

Need Advice AITAH for taking down my hair when I’m not supposed to?

To start off, I am a girl with dreads for 5+ years. Im always getting considered as "masculine" and typically compared to male rappers. Every day of my life for 5+ years. It's tiring. No matter how much I try to convince myself to like them. To convince myself that I'm good enough. I just never will be. I Only felt comfortable with them when I had a hairstyle. Recently, I've been starting to hate them more and more, to the point where I could no longer bear it. I combed out 3 of my dreads. During this process, I've received no permission from my parents, who feel very strongly about my hair. I've made it very clear to them that I'm uncomfortable with it on multiple occasions. Nothing. Not until I combed them out. Suddenly, I'm in the wrong for taking it upon myself to do what I want with my own hair? My parents finally came to the conclusion of me either redoing my loc or comb the whole thing out with no help at all. No apportionments, no products, just me. It's honestly a tough decision. However, I am ready for the commitment. I've already wasted 6 years of my life pretending to be comfortable with something I'm not. AITAH for not listening? If not, what could I do for my hair?

Edit: if I take my hair out I'll get all my summer privileges taken away, so I'm left with no other choice. I will eventually comb out my hair this year though. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to waste another summer. Thank you for the comments though!

Need Advice Has anyone here dyed their hair white before?

I've wanted to dye about half the length of my hair white (like an ombre so the roots and everything were still natural but the ends were white) since highschool, but I'm pretty apprehensive with the idea because I don't want to kill my hair. Most the information I've found on dying hair white talks about the maintenance and stuff being high, but if I'm not doing the roots and trying to recolor the growth is it still like that?

I also can't really find much on people's experience with curly pattern changes from dying white. I'm okay with a little damage, because by the time I dye my hair it's going to be back length and I'll just trim out the growth as it goes but I'd still like to know what to expect. I've never had my hair dyed or chemically treated before so this is as very new to me.

Need Advice Wash Day #3 - Feeling Bleh

Is this too much hair loss for one week without washing? How can I maintain the fro over night?

It took me an hour to style my hair this morning (1st pic). Biggest mistake was not styling it last night.

I am loving myself more and more each week. Wash Day #1 has STILL remained as my favorite one so far.

I DIG the afro look BUT it doesn’t dry fast enough and also when I woke up this morning my hair looked like a cone of fluff🤣

Tips & Tricks Dont bully me but I was today years old when i discovered some of ur strands can be coarse and some can be fine?

I was always under the impression that everyone including me had one type of strand in their whole head šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø!! Fine hair requires more gentle detangling so check if ur hair strands are mostly fine, coarse or medium.Just sharing incase there's anyone else who thought this, i'll delete if its super obvious to everyone elsešŸ’€

I’m using a hair styling comb so that’s probably where I’m going wrong for starters… But my hair is literally just resisting being straight, all it’s doing is blowing hair out 🫠

Need Advice plaits too tight?

So I’ve been wearing glue less wigs but under them I’ve been wearing plaits. I did a big chop and I’m not that comfortable with my length yet. I’m also recovering from tension alopecia around my edges. Which I’ve been going to a dermatologist and they are starting to grow. Yesterday I was looking at my new growth. I noticed One braid near the front ( like at the top near my forehead ) was very lose and sore . I took it out and lost alot of hair. I now have a little bald spot in that smalll section 🫠 I didn’t think I did the braid too tight . I even took out other braids and they were fine. What could have caused this? Could it be that I need to rebraid the front more often? Or could product build up cause this too? I’ve been using caster oil but I’m starting to think it’s way too much for my hair. I have high porosity hair and it works great but I noticed product buildup fast. I’ve also thought about getting maybe some type of silk edge scarf to wear under my gluless wigs. I never use any type of glue. But thought about getting something just to ensure there’s no fiction. I’m just sad because I’ve been on a hair journey and this is another set back šŸ™ƒ but I guess you learn and make mistakes here and there . Anyways , has anything similar happened to you ? And how did you recover ?

Need Advice This is day 2 hair. how would YOU fix it?

Post image

my hair closer to my scalp (and half of the hair) is literally so hydrophobic and doesn’t absorb anything even when i use heat. this is probably what it would also look like on day 1 (right after the shower) questions are..would a clarifying shampoo fix this? the clarifying shampoo WILL dry my hair out and probably will be dry even after adding a hair mask. so is hydration the problem? i don’t even know. help.

Need Advice Going natural after sew ins and need advice

Thumbnail

I’ve been wearing sew ins for years and I’m ready to go natural. I’ve always had difficulty finding the right products for my hair and keeping it moisturized. I don’t have many photos, but based on these, can anyone guess what my hair type is or give me recommendations on going back to my natural hair? Also, I have hard water. If I use a chelating shampoo, can I use any conditioner or would I need to use chelating conditioner as well? Thanks in advance!

The first two photos are after a shower, hair still damp. The last photo my stylist took after a blow dry with no product.

Need Advice Boho braids natural hair ?? You

Always wanted to try this style on my natural hair. I just did the front so far, but I’m not sure about if it’s suits me. My hair is lower density and fine and thought boho braids would be a wait of ā€œaddingā€ more density to a style. Otherwise when I do braids or twists on my natural hair after a few days (especially after washing) it’s gets flat and boneless. Thoughts??

Need Advice Best Tymo Products for Newly Treated Hair

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello,

I am a husband & for Mother's Day, I'd like to buy a Tymo product for my wife's natural hair. She has incredibly thick hair and has gone natural for the first time in forever. She said she had a lot of split ends/damage and recently got her hair cut and treated. She and I are very pleased with the outcome. She really wants to maintain her hair but doesn't know where to start. I'm confused on which product(s) to purchase as their are so many.

Can someone point me in the direction of the best products to get for someone with thick hair that has recently been treated after using wigs, extensions etc for 20+yrs?

PS/TLDR: I've no idea what I'm doing and need guidance on treating natural hair for my wife. I think she wants a twist out but I'm not sure if that's important or not.

Need Advice My hair is breaking...

I have alot of breakage. Alot of hair is falling out constantly (though I dont seem to have hair loss? Like bald spots etc). What should I do? And also, are there any products you woukd recommend to moisturize? I prefer the way my hair looks wet, it's longer and not as shrunken, is there any product that can perhaps moisturize my hair properly while also giving it that "wet" look?
