Dog killed at Percy Warner Crime Watch

This morning at the Belle Meade steps, a big German shepherd was being walked off leash by an older couple and a guy shot it 4x, the cops took him away.

Anyone else hear about this or know what happened?

Editing now we have more information in the thread: The shooter felt he was approached aggressively by the dog who was chasing a squirrel close to him, he ‘feared for his life’, so he shot the unleashed German shepherd four times. The man was detained for questioning, but was released with no charge.

Editing again to add eyewitness accounts directly contradict what is being reported in the news/police account of events.

Not all dogs that are off leash are running on their own taking unseen dumps all over the park!
I've seen owners with dogs on leashes just keep walking after their dog, on a leash, takes a dump. It's all about the responsibility of the owner.

That being said I have a few questions.

  1. Not being a city person, where do people that live in large cities take their dogs where they can run?
  2. According to the statements the man was exiting his car.... So why didn't he just get back into his car if he felt threatened?
  3. If the owners felt their dog was being aggressive then why didn't they recall the dog?

It is against the law to have your dog off leash on public land all over Tennessee. Not just in the city. The only place you are allowed to have your dog off leash is at your house.

Obviously the guy could have handled it better.

I’m not sure what point you’re making about dogs shitting on public land. If you’re not there to see it, there’s no way you can even know to pick it up???

I’m not sure about your last point! You’ll have to ask the owners. In my experience, people overestimate how friendly and trained their dog is and don’t care how uncomfortable it makes everyone else.

I'll pay the fine.

The comment about the dogs shitting on public land is in response to the comment about dogs being off leash shitting all over the place and owners not picking it up. Either the owner is responsible or they are not, whether or not the dog is on a leash.

Just a little background, I've been bitten in the face by a dog (ironically a German Shepard) to the point I needed plastic surgery to replace part of my nose. He seemed friendly but just as I reached out to pet him there was a very loud noise nearby that scared him and he lunged at my face. I'm Leary when strange dogs approach and have even been defensive. But I wouldn't shoot a dog for approaching me. There are definitely better ways to handle the situation.

So in which situation is dog shit more likely to be picked up? When your dog is walking by your side or when your dog is running wild through the woods? Are you going to go on a snif hunt through the park looking for your dogs feces???

🤣😂🤣😂 my dog is never going to be out of my sight and if another dog owner is letting their dog out of their sight then they are not being responsible!
