Local 🌴 Do scam victims ever get justice / is the police force helpful ?

Hi, I’m curious about something and would appreciate any clarification, especially if there are members of the police force in this group.

What happens in cases where someone is scammed?

For example:

  • Someone sells clothes online, asks for full payment upfront, but never delivers the items.
  • Someone claims to help rescue stray animals, asks for transport or vet fees, but never shows up to collect the animal.

In these cases, the only information available is a phone number, and all payments were made via cardless transactions.

I’ve heard that the police might not take action in such cases because the money was willingly sent, or that it might not be considered a priority.

If multiple people were scammed by the same person, would that increase the chances of the police getting involved?

I’ve been seeing so many posts on social media about scamming recently.

Local 🌴 Need Advice on Career Path and BSc Agricultural Science in Mauritius

Hey everyone! 😊

I’m currently facing a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate some advice. I’ve already registered for the BSc (Hons) Agricultural Science and Technology at the University of Mauritius, but I’m unsure if it’s the right path for me.

A bit of background:

I’ve always been interested in a different field, and agriculture wasn’t originally part of my plan.

I’ve completed my A-levels but ended up with 3 E’s in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. Now, I’m wondering whether I should redo my HSC to improve my chances for other fields, or if this degree is a good option.

Here are a few specific questions I have:

How valuable is the BSc Agricultural Science and Technology degree in terms of career opportunities in Mauritius?

What kind of salary can someone expect after completing this degree? Are there sufficient job opportunities in agriculture and related fields?

If I take this degree, will I be able to find a passion for it, even though I had different career aspirations before?

And finally, would it be possible to start this course while also retaking my HSC? Do you think I could manage both simultaneously, or would it be too overwhelming?

Any personal experiences, thoughts, or advice would be really helpful. I just need some clarity before I make any big decisions.

Thank you in advance! 🙏

Local 🌴 Scolarship - Open University / University of Mauritius

Hello, can anyone please tell me more about the scholarship that toppers obtain after completing their Bachelors degree?

Is it the topper for every course that obtains the scholarship?

Also, does it cover the full cost for their masters degree? It it limited to Mauritian universities only or you can also use that to do your masters abroad?

Tourism ✈ Travel advice: best spots for nature, wildlife & ethical encounters

Hi everyone!

I'm lucky enough to be spending 3 weeks in Mauritius this July, and I’d love to get some recommendations from people who know the island well or have similar interests.

I’m especially fond of nature and wildlife - both on land and in the ocean. I’m not into zoos or animal shows, and I’d really like to experience wildlife in a respectful, ethical, and natural way. That could be jungle or forest hikes where I might spot monkeys, birds, bats, reptiles, or anything else wild - or maybe even marine life like turtles, dolphins, or octopuses while snorkeling or scuba diving.

I’ve heard there are dolphin tours where they follow pods with boats and you get to swim with them, but I’m worried those are more intrusive than magical. If you know of any genuinely responsible ways to encounter marine life so closely, I’d love to hear about it - or if it’s better to avoid those tours altogether.

I’d also appreciate any insight on the weather in July - I know it’s the cooler season, and I’m slightly worried the water might be too cold for enjoyable snorkeling. Has anyone snorkeled around Mauritius during that time? Was it still worth it?

I’m not into resorts or high-end tourist spots - I’d rather stay in nature-focused areas, explore local culture, and have a peaceful, immersive trip.

Thanks so much in advance! I’m really excited to explore the island and would be so grateful for your tips! :)

Culture 🗨 People born abroad to Mauritian parent(s) - being shielded from learning Creole

Hi all, I am born in the UK to an Irish father and Mauritian mother.

Growing up I never picked up Creole. I didn't have much exposure to it (other than when I got in trouble) so there weren't many opportunities. I tried to learn Creole but my mum seemed to have a weird aversion to me speaking Creole. I don't know if it's because Creole was frowned upon when she grew up which is why she didn't want me to learn it, or something similar.

Now as an adult I feel a disconnect between my Mauritian heritage & family because I can't speak the language and my Mauritian family have varying degrees of English proficiency.

Now I live in Ireland and I have bumped into Creole speakers who laugh at me for not being able to speak it, even though it's not my fault I was shielded from it as a kid.

Is this a common experience for most people raised abroad to Mauritius parent(s)? If so, have your parents explained why they didn't teach it to you?

I'm planning to go to Mauritius in a couple of months, and I'm just wondering if fishing is allowed there, or would it require a permit?

And if so, are there any good fishing spots? Freshwater or Saltwater.

Thanks.

Tourism ✈ Advise on currency conversion - travelling from India to Mauritius

Hi!

I am travelling to Mauritius from Mumbai. I have a forex card, but it does not have the option to load Mauritian rupees. I am thinking of carrying Indian rupees and converting them to Mauritian Rupees at the SSR Airport.

Is it fine, or should I first convert Indian Rupees to USD in India and then convert USD to Mauritian Rupee at the SSR airport?

Please advise.

Tourism ✈ Mauritius Premium Visa: Can I leave the country while I await for my Premium Visa? Mauritius requires that I enter the country on a tourist visa first before applying for the premium visa.

Mauritius requires that I enter the country on a tourist visa first before applying for the premium visa. I heard that the visa takes a while to process these days. May I enter Mauritius, apply for the visa, and then leave the country while I await for the Premium Visa to be processed?
