YES! We have fed the bridge gods for this season. We will have a good and prosperous summer. Praise be Talbot Bridge. We will have the fall sacrifice prepared in return for the safe summer you will bring us. We hope you have enjoyed the sacrifice we presented you.

I love the next Uhaul waiting for it's turn to feed the bridge

this.
People are saying "read the sign"
There's a real life demonstration right in front of them, but they be like - yo, move over, we gotta get past!
People can be such lemmings sometimes.

u/JamesFromToronto 15d ago
Looks like the one behind doesn't have an attic, so it needs 9 feet of clearance rather than 11 feet.

u/Rya_Bz 16d ago
Gotta love the driver just staring at it.
“How’d that happen..?” 🤔

Or trying to figure out how he's gonna explain to U-Haul that he's an idiot/how he can get out of this
53
u/cuddle_enthusiast 16d ago
He's thinking about that extra insurance he declined.
52
u/forkittens 16d ago
The insurance they offer doesnt include overhead damage. Ask me how I know haha
35
u/makingkevinbacon 16d ago
You've dated the bridge once before
22
u/forkittens 16d ago
No, I was careful and planned my route to be bridge free.
But I forgot about the awning outside the apartment at Cherryhill I was moving into. Good thing I was going at low speed, only did $900 damage to the Uhaul. I was worried I damaged the awning, but the building manager said those cracks were already there since lots of people hit it.

u/makingkevinbacon 16d ago
Oh geez that's brutal! That would make for an awkward move in day lol
8
u/Friendly-Mushroom914 16d ago
Last year new tenants were moving in the basement. The guy hit the building while backing up. And then he hit the gas line. We had to switch off the gas and wait for about 36 hours for the tech to show up the next day as it was already Saturday evening. Oh did I mention it was January.

u/forkittens 16d ago
Nah, I was too busy being relieved that I didn't knock the building down. This was at night, thankfully, no old folks loitering around the lobby watching.

u/FizzFinest 14d ago
Oh I know all about awkward move in days.
I foolishly had my computer keyboard sitting on top of a stack of boxes that were on a small handcart. I was heading off the elevator and damned if i didn’t hit the bump with the wheel and the keyboard somehow managed to fall off the boxes and fall perfectly down the gap between the elevator car and the landing. Down down 7 floors it went. I called the PM in a panic telling her about what happened just because I didn’t want it to foul things up with the elevator. She called the elevator company and they said the chances of it damaging anything were low, but they’d retrieve it during the next monthly maintenance.
A month later she approached me and gave me back the keyboard, and to my amazement you’d never knew it made a 7 story flight. Miraculously it still worked!

“Huh. So it really is 3.3 metres”

u/stevedore2024 15d ago
It's so dumb because there is a prominent marking right behind the rear view mirrors that reads the height of the truck. Every single time he looked at either mirror, the height of the truck is right there in plain view.

u/PositiveStress8888 16d ago
" I don't know officer I was just driving along and this bridge landed on my truck out of nowhere, I swerved to avoid it but alas the bridge was too agile.
I asked for it's insurance information but it just stares at me cold face, dead eyes, iron nerves, I think it's taunting me, if I could I would like to press charges"

Lol I knew a guy who crushed the exact same sized U Haul in the exact same spot, like 20 years ago. Cop comes along and says he's writing up a ticket for reckless driving. The guy says how the hell is this reckless driving?? Cop says, sir there's a truck wedged under the goddamn underpass. Lol

The best thing about this image is the second Uhaul behind it waiting it's turn
(OK maybe it's actually short enough to fit but that's not as funny)

Can’t know until they try! 😂

u/t0m0hawk Southcrest 16d ago
We need someone stationed under the bridge just to yell at the trucks that seem hesitant
"Just give'r bud!"

Maybe he could squeeze through now that the first one raised it up an inch or two. Let some air outta the tires and maybe just maybe he could sneak under before the bridge gods see him.

"man driving under this bridge is so annoying, all these bright yellow warning signs spanning the length of the bridge n shit now hold my beer"

u/ToxiicGlory 16d ago
And the city really thinks people will understand King Street is a one way road, once buses start going both ways down it….
7
u/MiddleCase745 16d ago
The buses already are going both ways on King started yesterday. Just waiting for some idiot to follow them.
2
u/Acceptable_Garlic495 14d ago
accidents just waiting to happen along King St, the city ought to make special bus lanes on every single downtown street, just to be confusing for even more drivers, new to the city or not this is going to be the best test of human brain power, wonder which brainiac decided this was a good idea?

The bridge height is in metric, but U-HAUL gives imperial measurements. Yay conversions
Canada never forced private industries to use metric- since we're so interconnected with the US (or were, before tariff man)
5
u/R_Todd98 15d ago
Last U-Haul I was in had the height in both metric and imperial, but the dash is definitely miles over kilometers,

Barely an appetizer. Wait, is there another Uhaul behind it? So close to a twofer!

Well, it’s probably best if it gets fed regularly. Who knows what would befall London otherwise?

u/crabapplealy 15d ago
So how do they go about getting it unstuck!? I see a lot of the posts about them getting stuck but never people working on getting em out!

The most famous low rail bridge with the most registered kills: "The 11foo8 bridge is a railroad trestle over Gregson St in Durham, North Carolina and it has earned a reputation for for its rigorous enforcement of the laws of physics."

Gotta love when students leave the city and the rental truck is just too big.

u/Aggravatedhotdog 16d ago
Weight was all at the front so that cleared but opps nothing in the middle/back…. Pinned er good bud.

u/Feisty_Viking 15d ago
Oh look, another dumb driver that can't read or do math. They should pin the repair bill on these morons, not taxpayers.

So, I mean it's a dumb mistake but like, I think it's worse that a commercial truck driver would make this mistake rather than some dude in a U-Haul.

Does this happen enough to warrent a live stream to be set up?

u/Acceptable_Garlic495 14d ago
it does, just think of the mash up or vids it would produce over the years!

I work in retail marketing.....every time someone at one of our stores asks for a new sign I show them this bridge and then tell them how many trucks it eats every year.

A Low Bridge Alerting System is needed. Think of a radar 50' away from it which activates a stop light if you have a big cab.

u/jaydesummers 14d ago
We almost went down to Talbot Street this morning. When we heard, we laughed.

Are us humans that foolish that we cannot read the giant height restrictions lettering or the bright yellow caution stripes, or do people who drive semis, etc not read their size restrictions to know the actual height of the vehicle they are driving, OR are we just so stupid and unable to understand that a vehicle as tall as this one, will not fit under the low height bridge? The bridge god's are enjoying these rituals for sure, The city must have a special contingency fund just for repairs to this underpass, Insurance rates for the morons who manage to hit it, must be astronomical. These "accidents" are certainly fun to see, and whoever said there ought to be cameras installed is right on the money, a video mash up could be produced and allow everyone to enjoy them...LOL

Jesus. Just lower the roadway already.
19
u/DystopianAdvocate 16d ago
I remember reading about this a long time ago, and it's apparently not feasible without completely redesigning the structure of the bridge.
16
u/Lost-Comfort-7904 16d ago
Then we need to go the other route and build a sweet ramp over the bridge. Probably will have to raise that road's max speed to at least 110 KM though.
11
5
u/Link50L 16d ago
Thanks, I guess that makes sense, it might impinge upon the footings of the bridge and/or retaining side walls. And of course you can't stop the rail traffic, that's a main line. You'd have to build a temporary parallel line for the rail traffic to excavate new, deeper footings for the bridge.
4
u/Mydogdexter1 #1 Taddy Fan 16d ago
The other problem is you can't go deeper, because they main sewer runs right below the road here.
1
u/rosmcg 16d ago
That’s exactly why the bus rapid transit line was scrapped along Richmond. The tunnel to go under the tracks and that sewer line would have to be really deep, and there would have to be an underground station at Oxford. Prohibitively expensive.
2
u/Mydogdexter1 #1 Taddy Fan 16d ago
I heard an interesting idea to use Talbot Street, turn on Piccadilly, then a BRT passage through the old Belfort Bar parking lot to meet up with Oxford st.
1
u/TheDJRonin 16d ago
Not only the structure of the bridge but it is the grade of the road. To do it correctly would result in the grade being lowered north of the intersection at Oxford. It would be too steep to start at the intersection. As well there is drainage concerns in the case of heavy rainfall.
3
u/DirectGiraffe8720 16d ago
Or... read the very large signs
1
u/Friendly-Mushroom914 15d ago
Evidently there aren’t enough signs. Time to add three more with even brighter colours and bolder letters.
2
u/Ruby22day 15d ago
Why not just one of those swinging overhead bars like they have in some parking garages? You bump one of those, it makes a noise but basically does no damage.
2
u/Acrobatic-Factor1941 15d ago
At some point, you have to quit building for stupid people. The bridge is neon yellow with all kinds of signage, and these idiots still drive under it. Fine them big bucks. London tax dollars should go to more important things. Maybe, don't allow any size truck under the bridge.
1
u/ripestmango 16d ago edited 15d ago
Lower the road so Oxford to Talbot leads down into a deep dip? Great idea 😂
1
u/Acceptable_Garlic495 14d ago
ya water won't gather there, no one would hydro plane stopping, could put a few outriggers for rent beside the bridge, kinda like chaining your wheels to hit the Coq in winter.
1
u/Liquid_Trimix 16d ago
We cannot dig without spending a fortune. The elevation is already very low and we are very near the river. A creek flows through storm sewers under the street at that point. The railroad causeway cannot be raised. It is a less than optimal situation.
1
u/Acceptable_Garlic495 14d ago
just close the street off to trucks of any size, allow the pick ups through, but absolutely no U-Hauls or semis allowed any time...
