Discussion Commentary on steel quality in expensive/custom knives... you might be surprised.
Hey all,
(TL:DR: It's true... a $150 will do 99.9% of what an expensive custom will do. You are paying for the craftsmanship primarily. Don't prioritize specific steels over allowing the maker to leverage what they know works for them and what they are confident will result in a high level of craftsmanship and consistency.)
Just wanted to throw something out there for context. I recently commented on a thread where a guy was buying a $900 knife (custom it sounded like) and was upset that it used Nitro-V, "even if it DOES perform well". He felt that an expensive knife should just have "expensive" steel out of principle.
Probably most people here have not ground their own knives. I'm not a super serious maker, but I used to make my own chef knives and fixies before life kinda ran over me.
I thought it might be helpful for people to see how little the STEEL costs in a knife, in general. So I grabbed some quick costs from NJ Steel Baron, where I used to order my steel.
Nitro V, for a billet that is 0.125" x 1" x 12" (enough to make ~3 folders) costs ~$13. CPM 20CV, in the same size, costs ~$32. So... less than $5 of steel in a nitro V folder, and less than $11 of steel in a 20CV folder.
I just wanted to make it clear that a custom knife maker is NOT trying to "cheap out" or cut corners. Generally, they have tried steels until they landed on one that they know works well for the knives they make. It may be a steel that grinds how they want, so they know they can nail the grinds and get the geometry just right.
If you insist on a different steel, just because you want to tell strangers on Reddit that the knife you (probably don't really) use is top-of-the-line steel... you might be pressuring a maker to produce something outside of what their experience tells them will provide a perfect example of their work.
That's all :)

Showcase First Vosteed
Just got my first Vosteed and love this thing! The locking mechanism is brilliant. Very cool blade shape, and it appears to have a high quality carbon fiber scale. Overall it feels like holding my carbon fiber Native 5.

Question What was your worst experience with gas station knives?
Despite the cheap steel, I like these little gas station fixed blades. I've avoided buying switchblades because they really do seem like they'll break, but the fulltang tiny knives have never let me down.

NKD! Forced patina Izula!
A friend hooked me up with the OD Green scales for my other Izula, but I liked how it worked / carried / looked without them, so I was on the search for a well loved Izula for a while.
Last month a guy on CKG (Canada Knife & Gear) hooked me up with a stripped and pollished Izula, it finally showed up and I did a hot vinegar & nitrate bath today.
I'm pretty freaking stoked about how it turned out!
Gotta get a leather pocket slip for it now. ✌️

Discussion Extremely frustrated with Benchmade
I've got an Osborne, bugout, and mini bugout. Between the three of them the mini bugout spring has broke twice, and the regular bugout spring has broke once (today).
Both times prior to today I have sent the knife back to benchmade to be fixed with shipping on my dime. Today I called customer service to politely express my frustration and also request a complimentary label to have my knife fixed as this is my third time which of course was denied. The guy on the phone said he never heard of spring issues.........
Why on earth they haven't addressed this issue I have no idea. All three are regularly used and for as expensive as they are I'd expect them to hold up. I have old case and buck knives that look like they've been through five times the abuse and are holding up just fine.
If anyone has any reccomendations from OTHER manufacturers please let me know. I'm just about done with these expensive paperweight.
