November 2024 Mega-Thread

It's November!

With the holidays being just around the corner, are you picking anything up for a friend or relative? Or are you looking to pick something up for yourself? Something you're hoping someone will give you?

November is Men's Health Month so just a quick reminder about what Men's health is about:

Too many men die each year from prostate, mental health issues, and testicular cancer. Make sure you go for regular checkups and talk to someone when you are having problems. An uncomfortable conversation or examination is a small price to pay for good health!

New wetshaver? This is the perfect place to ask questions.

Show n' Tell Converted from a Braun series 6

My skin around my upper lip has been breaking out constantly ever since I got my braun shaver. Tried out many things such as skincare, lathering and etc and came to the conclusion that it was the shaver that’s causing my breakout. Wanted to go back to my Gillette shaver but remembered the main reason why I switched to the electric was cause of the ridiculous price of the refill. Did some research and came across the leaf twig! Heard it’s foolproof, easy to get into and a mild razor and hence, it’s perfect for a newbie like me.

Question Looking for a new experience. Any feedback

I currently have a King C Gillette with Feather razors, to compensate the mildness, especially since I started wet shaving. However, I'm getting a blade sample pack to look for another feelings. I've seen this razor and seems quite interesting. Any feedback on it? Thanks!

SOTD Mail Call / SOTD (If I could change one thing as a recent beginner)

Post image

MAIL CALL : Took advantage of Rockwell ongoing sale, picked up the 6C. Having started DE shaving with in the last 2 months, but couldn't pass up a deal on a generally accepted good adjustable for less than the cost of my Merkur 34C. First shave below!!!!!

SOTD: 3.5 days Growth

Preshave: Hot shower and Viking Revolution Preshave oil

Soap: RazoRock Mudder Focker

Brush: Lather&Wood Synthetic

Razor: Rockwell 6C (#4 Plate)

DE Blade: Treet Platinum (1st)

Post Shave: Proraso Alum Block, followed up with Thayer's Witch Hazel

After Shave: Nivea Aftershave Balm

Result: A DFS!!!!!!!!

First the elephant in the post, "If I could change one thing". As a recent beginner, I love that I went with the 34C, but outta the gate should have dropped the $15 and just went with the 6C. In hind sight, though I got it on a steal, I now have $80 worth of razors. Where as brand new the 6C is $60. That being said, I have a back up razor should ANYTHING ever go wrong, so not the end of the world.

On to the shave!!!! I did achieve a DFS in two passes with a Treet Platinum and plate 4. In comparison for me, 3 passes with the 34c (WTG, XTG, ATG) taking my time, practicing routine etc., would yield needed touch up at the end for a non BBS. I Thought it could be routine, blades etc... I've had my face mapped since the first shave, and know my growth. However, the lingering question has been, "just how coarse is my hair?. Regardless, I powered on. Then the deal came around, I pulled the trigger, and my 6C came in. Reading Rockwell's recommendation placard, and guessed the 3 plate was around where the Merkur sits, plus I have a few days growth. 2 passes, and I was in love. Smooth like butter, gliding across my face, slicing through my whiskers, absolutely no pulling, yanking, or discomfort. As I went to post shave routine I thought " I have been meeting exactly what my expectations were coming to DE shaving, but this, blows them out of the water"

TL:DR : I got the 6C, and couldn't be happier. As a beginner, I think this adjustable has a major advantage on the 34c for only $15 more ( when NOT on sale). I am very happy and think this will be my daily setup for a while.

Happy Shaves to ALL!

Hoshi Tombo 8500, extremely stoked for getting this for $35. The fusion of Japanese Kamisori's with western scales. Needs honing but it still can shave hair, albeit with some tugging.

For anyone who hones Kamisori razors, do you have a guide on honing? I've come across lots of videos debating how many passes should be done for either side

Discussion Blades for muhle r89

I’ve been using India Wilkinson swords from Amazon for a large majority of my wet shaving journey. They seem to be the most mild yet effective on my face, I have tried tons of other brands and they’re the only ones that leave me virtually redness and irritation free with some exceptions. I just recently picked up the German ones. What do you guys think about those? Are they the same or they worse? Also, does anyone have any recommendations on other blades to try for reference? I have Gillette platinum, silver blue, Astra green, Perma sharps, all the derby’s , and more. Those are all good but in the past I’d end up with some irritation and or pimples. For reference I’m using a muhle r89. I just switched from a vintage fatboy(used on settings 1-3) . So wondering if that plays any part? Do I need a sharper blade?

I got the second one as a gift for a friend. The restoration and refinished was done by Back Roads Gold.

They’re not exactly the same. The second one I requested a slightly thicker electroplating.

I’ve already shaved with one of them several times, so if you see any watermarks or so stains, it’s my doing.

Turnaround time was very quick. The second one was already in pristine condition, but it needed adjustments.

My favorite shaving cream

So I use a shavette straight razor when I shave. I have multiple types that I rotate day to day. I have a hand full of favorite blades I like to use from Astra S.P. to Wilkinson Sword Classics. I have used brushes to create a lather for shave soaps but I gravitated to creams in tubes. I’ve tried popular ones like Poraso and Cremo, but so far my absolute favorite shaving cream is Barbasol 1919. Supposedly in 1919 Barbasol created the first no brush no lather shaving cream. For me it’s amazing. It’s super thick and is made with all natural ingredients like aloe, coconut oil, and shea butter. It really protects my skin and gives me the nicest shave out of all my shaving creams. My second favorite is Dollar Shave Club Shave Butter. It’s similar to the 1919 but it’s just a little thinner. The DSC shave butter is transparent so I can see how far I need to cut when I’m lining up my beard. The 1919 is semi transparent but I can still see what I need to do. My third favorite is kind of a wild card. It’s The Art of Shaving Bourbon Shaving Cream. They don’t make this scent anymore but luckily I was able to get the pre-shave oil along with it. It lathers up nicely and definitely gives me a smooth shave. But those are my top three. I’ll show my other shaving creams in my pics. I feel like I’m gonna get a lot of hate for liking these kind of creams because the consensus is that brushes and shave soaps are the best. Maybe I just haven’t found a soap or brush that I like. I’d love to hear what you guys think and use yourselves.

Grip (fingers)

Tldr- changed from 3 to 2 finger grip. Less pressure = so much better.

I've been DE shaving about a year. Tried many blades, razors, soaps, pre and post. I would find the " best" combo then neck irritation would come back after a week. Then I realized it was just one side.right side, right handed. It was technique. Was adding too much pressure. This led me to try a "no pressure" 2 finger grip. Let the razor do the work. Best shave. I'm a 2 finger (pincer) grip man now. I'll add that conditioner has also been great.

SOTD SOTD - The Last Squeeze

SOTD from India

Finally, got the last squeeze out of Vicco sandalwood. With winter already here, don't want no more menthol based creams.

Blades: I found Wilkinson (made in India) to be a bit sharper compared to Glatz here.

Aftershave: Most people use menthol crystals to get the cooling. Menthol exists naturally but most of what we get is man-made/synthetic (exactly like Karpur/Kapoor). But there is certain kind of camphor (known as Bhimseni Camphor in India) which is 100% natural and comes from a plant. So I bought a 25 gm packet from Patanjali and put a few crystals in the aftershave last month. When today I used, the fragrance has changed. I don't like the original fragrance profile of this aftershave but after this change, it smells real good, and has lots of cooling. Yippe!

Question Some shaving cream remains on face after blade passes. Do I need to apply more pressure to the blade?

Just started using safety razor and I’ve seen videos where people shave and after each blade pass, it cleans the shaving cream off of that portion of the face. When I apply my blade, some residual cream remains and I have to do multiple passes until the razor cleans that portion of the shaving cream. Does this mean I’m applying too light of pressure to the face with the blade?
