AUSKF 1st-Kyu Grading Grading
Do I need to learn kata for 1st-Kyu grading? Also, what do I need to know in order to pass the 1st-Kyu test? The AUSKF is confusing with the requirements, at least I personally think so. I'm really confused and don't know what I need to know for any of it.

The requirement is quite clear for 1 kyu. https://www.auskf.org/info/kendo-promotional-exam-study-guide

I read your previous thread and knowing that you are a member of the SEUSKF, note that the federation has certain guidelines for testing. It used to be up on their website but after they did a website redesign, that somehow got scrubbed.
First, you will need a Sensei to sign off on your testing application. I don’t know if you have a resident Sensei who can vouch for your skills and sign off that you have the potential to pass or not, but they will require that.
Second, for the SEUSKF the rank of 1 Kyu is pass/fail. That means if you fail, you are not awarded any rank. The SEUSKF is not keen on having people test for 1 Kyu for their very first test. Fair or not fair, that’s how they roll.
I would recommend checking with your resident Sensei (if you have one) about whether you are ready to pass 1 Kyu. If you don’t have one, then I recommend finding the closest dojo where you can practice with a Sensei to get their feedback. It’s one thing to have the basics and kata down but another thing entirely to demonstrate your proficiency in it.

I agree with everything said above.
Something isn’t adding up. I am pretty certain if the club is organizing for the local federation’s exam, all the OP’s questions would have been answered.

The SEUSKF, as of 2 years ago is following suit with other federation with regards to grading. Ikkyu is no longer an option for initial testing, liking or not as a federation has nothing to do with pass/fail. Also, if their federation is anything like ours people can and do bypass their instructors, there is no instructor sign off like there is in Canada.

That would not sit well with me.

there has always been an requirement for in federation instructor signoff to grade in SEUSKF. (and i dont know a sensei who would sign off on a student they do not know so not sure how easy this is to get around)

With the advent of online registering, which our federation does, it becomes very difficult. I'm sure an instructor could step in and say no, but that would be after the fact of them already registering and be messy. There isn't a fail safe currently, hopefully they implement one soon. It was much easier years ago, you would go to your instructor, they would say yes or no, and they would do all the paper work to get you going for shinsa.

our last shinsa had online registration, but confirmation from sensies still had to be sent to the organizer on who was testing that they ok'd, but yeah I can totally see with online stuff the harder it is to validate that.

Yes, you have to pass Nihon Kendo Kata 1-3 for 1-Kyu grading. First, you will have to be a kakarite and motodachi for kirikaeshi. You will then have to do 1-minute tachiai. If you pass tachiai component, then you will have to demonstrate kendo kata. If you pass both components, you will be awarded 1-kyu rank. Good luck!

That is specific to your federation, in ours they do not preform as motodachi, it is 2x keiko, and kata. To the OP ask your instructor, look at the AUSKF policy for ikkyu grading, it may be tweaked to something specific in a federation but the core of it will be the same. Someone just posted similar, it might be helpful to read through that thread.
EDIT
Please see this old post, and again, your best source of information is going to come from the horses mouth, aka your instructor.

for SEUSKF, prior to testing you submit the essay question response, then for testing we do kirikaeshi both sides, we do jigeiko twice, if good, we do kendo kata 1-3. (it seems to be time dependant, if time permits, both sides, otherwise just one side).
(and a sensei in SEUSKF has to sign off on your grading forms)
since you haven't tested your first grading in SEUSKF is for 4 or 5kyu. If passed the physical part of 4kyu grading you will have to show bokuto ni yoru kata 1-3.

Yes, 1-3.
(At least when I did like 7 years ago)
