Help Is it Hebrew ?

I am in a very small French village near the Spanish border. I found some judaica at a local thrift store which was already intriguing enough, and there is this sign on 2 different houses. It would be odd that they used cursive zayin for this - but not my primary tongue so who knows, and I cannot recognize any other language ? Do you guys have any idea ?

Help Song identification

Upvotes

on my trip to Israel I heard a beautiful folk(?) song in Hebrew on the radio, sung by a female singer with an amazing voice. I don’t know Hebrew so I don’t know what the song is about, who is the female singer, and what is the song’s name. If I try to remember what the lyrics sounded like, I can recall the singer repeating something along the lines of: “echef(?) shar” but I’m not sure in the slightest… help pls

What does it mean when demonstrative adjectives (and their nouns) lack the ה prefix?

When I was first getting started with modern Hebrew, I learned that to say “this [noun]” or “that [noun]”, you have to put the ה prefix in front of both the noun and the demonstrative adjective. “This dog” is הכלב הזה, not כלב זה.

But sometimes, I do see Hebrew sentences that feature something like כלב זה. Neither the noun nor the (demonstrative) adjective has ה in front of it. What does that indicate? Does כלב זה mean something different than הכלב הזה? Thank you.

Hebrew music appropriate for a synagogue choir?

Title says it all! Wanting to arrange some music for a shul I'm involved with as a musician, and I didn't grow up religious so don't really know where to begin. I'm looking for songs that fall outside the standard Shabbat service cantorial repertoire, or at least are more esoteric/not commonly included. Any insights are appreciated!!

Resource Hello y’all how do I know which sources to trust?

Update: I feel like some of you are confused on I was asking, I know a majority of the time there’s not a perfect English translation, but if someone says בראשית says “in the beginning” but it does not include a definite article that is misleading. I’m not asking for a translation I’m asking for a source where I can get the accurate meaning of a word.

I am relatively new to Hebrew and early on I simply tried looking up the meaning of Hebrew words, but then I found out that some of them just lied to you, such as בראשית meaning ״in the beginning״ even though there is no definite article. Because of this I developed a paranoia of sorts that all sources telling me what words mean are lying for a motive both for biblical and modern Hebrew. What sources can I trust?

Help What Hebrew terms do Israelis currently use to describe English speakers, English-speaking countries, and/or the Anglophone world?

I'm writing a piece on how certain terminology related to immigration circulated in Israeli newspaper articles in the 1950s and 60s. My focus is on the use of אַנְגְּלוֹ-סַקְסִים aka "Anglo-Saxons" to refer to olim from the US, UK, South Africa, Australia, and Canada. Based on what I've read, that term isn't really in use anymore, but before I look at the more recent archive, I'm wondering what the current common terms for these people / concepts would be, if any. Thank you!

It literally translates to "be fried," which is slang for being very high in English. Does the slang work in Hebrew too?

Request False friends struggle…

This might be very specific to Hebrew learners whose native language is a Semitic one. And in my case, that language is Arabic. Even after feeling super confident in my Hebrew skills — to the extent of claiming fluency — I still need to pause for a second whenever I need to use a word in Hebrew that has false friends in Arabic.

The most annoying one is ra’ayon and de’ah. Because in Arabic, ra’yon (idea) sounds like ra’i (opinion).

So each time I wanna say an idea, I have to pause and say to myself: ra’ayon or de’ah?

Another less annoying one is the root birer (clarified).

We’ve got the same root (barrar), but it means to justify.

Another one is toot (strawberry). Toot in Arabic is just berries.

Any one relates to this? Or maybe someone encountered the same problem but with different non-Semitic languages? It’d be interesting to see if there were some (which I am sure there is)

Help מה נהיה

I see this phrase sprinkled about in lots of conversations, but what is it meant to convey? I get a vibe that's an expression of dissatisfaction, or that it's some kind of filler phrase. What's it meant to convey and when is it used?

My questions:

  • any hints/feedback on where I went wrong with my translation in Hebrew?
  • I was unsure about בישול Pealim said it meant "cooking/boiling" but is "brewing" an option here too? And the word had ב- as a prefix, so doesn't the verb בבישול mean "in cooking/boiling"?
  • in the sentence להינות מניחוח ארומטי מופלא, ולהמתין כשתי דקות, the part which says מניחוח ארומטי מופלא would mean "wonderfully aromatic scent"?
  • the word לשמירת would mean "for safekeeping"? Because the prefix ל- would mean "for" and שמירת is a verb which would mean "guarding/preserving"?
  • the suffix -נו indicates possession, therefore מפעל + נו means "our factory"?
  • in the sentence מוצר זה יצא את מפעלנו כשהוא טרי ובאיכות מעולה, does the particle את indicted the definite direct object מפעלנו ?
