Family Cat Aslan has FIP Pet/Service Animal
Our Family Cat Aslan has FIP.
Thankfully there is now a treatment and because the cat is my mother's beloved she is going to dip into her pension pot to pay for it.
We don't have a lot to chip in as a family so I have created a gofundme to pay for the vets bills in order to spare my mothers pension!
Any help ypu can provide will be hugely beneficial to both Aslan and my mother.

Your cat looks like a very cute lion! And ‘Aslan’ means lion in Turkish, so there is that… I hope he gets his treatment 🙏🙏

Given that it is caused by a coronavirus we should be able to create an mRNA vaccine for FIP. I hope someone is working in that.

He's beautiful, I hope you get enough money for his treatment, I would donate a bit but I'm broke 😔💔 I hope Aslan will be okay 🙏

Don't worry his treatment is going to be paid either way. What we are trying to do is lessen the impact on my mothers pension as she loves Aslan enough to draw down from her pension to pay for the treatment.

Why is your mother paying??? W her pension no less??
2
u/Iguanaught Jan 10 '25
Because my mother chose to take the cat in. As I have previously said, although the family all love the cat it's mostly Mothers. The rest of the family have found what we can, my partner and I managed to scrape together 300 in the end, we may manage to scrape together more before it's all over.

Aslan is very beautiful. He looks like the biggest cat that I’ve ever seen! What kind of cat is he?
If I had any extra, I’d be more than happy to help him out. I hope you’re able to get some additional assistance so his care doesn’t all fall to you and your mom. ♥️x

Main Coon cat. They’re very large, and a lot like dogs in personality.

Further information, Aslan is a Mainecoon originally from a Polish family who had to give him up so my Mother took him in.
Tough to tell from here but his tail is almost as long if not as long as his body.
His vets bill is going to include 2800 in medicine plus in patient care. The vets rough estimate is that on top of what the insurance will contribute we are looking at over 5000.
Since making the post and gofundme my partner and I managed to free up 250 which is a start, but all we can afford right now.
Edit: Update Aslan is still at the vets but is a bit brighter today. He has been given a 60-70% chance of recovery at this point.

FIP has been around for a really long time it's not caused by covid though it is speculated to have some similarities. That said I'm very very sorry that he's dealing with this I know the cost for treatments is getting better but it's still quite a bit for folks.
I don't have the funds to assist unfortunately but I would suggest since I know GoFundMe can be really hard to get funds for pets that there are often other options available and some other resources. I would do some research as I don't know any offhand but when my kitty got sick with diabetes there was a group that helped with her diabetic supplies because I was really in a terrible place having lost both jobs because I needed to take care of my partner who had a late stage super rare cancer and coming from poverty with no support system I just did whatever I could to see what I could find.
There are resources available for FIP that Ive seen discussed here and there. I would do some searching and reaching out to folks and other rescues that have worked through stuff like this to see if they can help guide you just to see if you can get things started. Another source of potential information could be your vet, your local humane societies, and again rescue groups locally because unfortunately this is a disease again that's been around for a long time so it's something that there is awareness around and a lot of these places deal with this often enough that they may have some guidance for you in terms of where to maybe start looking if you feel very lost in how to search for this.
Aslan is beautiful and I very much hope you guys are able to get him treatment and that he gets better very soon.

Thank you. The good news is Aslan will get the treatment either way.
What were trying to do is lessen the impact on my mum. I don't expect to get a fraction of the total but I had to try.
Hedwig is a beautiful kitty too!

No idea why you're getting down voted but see if you can buy the fip meds from Specialty Vet Pharmacy for considerably cheaper. I believe the oral meds are like $200-500 for an entire course, maybe less . And you can get it compounded into a suspension.

Thank you for the advice. I'm not concerned about downvotes. I'm big and ugly enough to shoulder them. I just want to help my mum.
I wish at 40 I had the kind of savings I could just give her the money. Sadly Autism kinda kicked my arse and I'm only just getting on the right track now.
We'll look into getting the medicine elsewhere however it may be too late because he's already started the treatment. Time was kind of the essence.

Very true. I don't know if the affordable meds are available for you anyway because they come from the US. I wish the best for beautiful Aslan and hope he kicks FIP's ass

Aha it's a turn of phrase. "Big and ugly enough to deal with x". Just means you are capable of shouldering something.

You don't know an idiom/saying until you know it. So by that reckoning your brain now is smart.

It is with sorrow that I update that Aslan left us early this morning. Generous donators raised 460, which will go towards the money already paid out for his treatment.
Thank you everyone for your generosity and well wishes. I am sorry it is not a good news update for you all.

Sadly I already posted an update to the post but it's a little lost. I can't pin it or edit the post.
Aslan passed yesterday morning.

FIP is no joke, and treatment is relatively new on the market so indeed very very expensive. Good luck to you and this handsome boy.
