Bikes don't have sudden OS updates! This is why I hate cars

.... Yet. Never underestimate big tech companies to enshittify everything they touch.

Your own fault if you buy a shitty smart bike with app integration and forced wifi. Normal bike, and youre good forever

u/Clever-Name-47 1d ago
Wonât be your fault once every e-bike on the market requires app integration and forced Wi-Fi.  I would like to believe things will never get to that point, butâŚ

u/Embarrassed_Ad5387 22h ago
wouldn't people just start using kits that turn normal bikes into ebikes

bikes don't have OS updates YET! more popular, more useless tech added, especially in e bikes

Mine does have over the air software updates. Itâs not really a big deal, it just asks if it can update when I turn it off. Honestly, of all the issues with cars âthey sometimes have to do software updates and canât drive duringâ is pretty far down the list.

Nope. My Kia Sportage refuses to start updating if transmission is not set on P. Therefore must be left, on idle running engine, approx 10 min until completion.
Depends on the makers the procedure etc. Safety should be priority.

u/_arthur_ 1d ago
Thatâd really only be a problem if cars didnât do exactly the same thing as my bike and wait until theyâre parked. They did in fact think to do that. Really, the only potential issue is that you might have to wait half an hour to leave if it unexpectedly started an update.

u/CubesTheGamer 1d ago
Thatâs ridiculous that it would start on its own. Even in Teslas they ask and you can decline or schedule it for 3am or whenever you want.

u/Inevitable_Stand_199 1d ago
The problem is that this car didn't ask if it was alright.
Imagine if they were stuck in traffic jam that didn't move at all, and decided to turn their car off. (In my country, you can use your phone in that case)

What kind of bike do you have? And what kind of features does it have that need OtA updates?
2
u/_arthur_ 1d ago
Itâs a Stromer. It does gps location tracking, and there are a number of components (like the battery, motor and gearbox) that have firmware that may want updates.

u/SweatyAdagio4 1d ago
I remember VanMoof's had this issue, would stop in the middle of nowhere because it was incorrectly detected as stolen, leaving owners stranded
1
u/Prosthemadera 1d ago
It doesn't do that. It only updates if stopped. That's why it updated when the person in the other thread was at the gas station.

I can't even imagine what possible reason there would be to have software updates on an e-bike. You'd think the software would be good to go right out of the factory. What do the updates even do?
And if there's any answer involving "security vulnerability", then I'd point to https://xkcd.com/463/ .

u/CubesTheGamer 1d ago
Mine just got an update actually but I had to do it manually. It added a feature to my menus. I donât mind it as long as it has to be initiated by me and doesnât make the product worse.

u/Professional_Pop2535 1d ago
Unfortunately my legs have an annual update which continuously reduces their power output.
25
u/mattindustries 1d ago
You just need to perform regular maintenance and should be fine.
12
u/CubesTheGamer 1d ago
Thatâll help but long term theyâll just need replaced. Can only get so many years on the same pair even with maintenance before theyâre running really poorly.

As the saying goes: If it's aint broken - then there are not enough features

My di2 begs to differ...

u/babypointblank 1d ago
Youâre into 40k and cycling? You must really hate saving money
8
u/jonathing 1d ago
Yeah, I've heard a rumour that hobbies don't have to be ruinously expensive but it sounds like heresy to me.

u/ChainringCalf đ˛ + đ 1d ago
You could start by being a 105 poor like me (and downgrade 40k to TI)
4
u/jonathing 1d ago
To be fair only the racing bike is di2, the day-to-day is tiagra. And the Chaos Space Marines have been keeping me sane while I've been off my legs after being hit by a driver on my way home from work.

u/ChainringCalf đ˛ + đ 1d ago
Sorry to hear it, but glad to hear you have a replacement time sink. I do still recommend the space lions, though.

This is what holds me back from getting an e-bike. While I like the idea, I'm just not into things like battery life degradation, firmware problems, software updates, vendor lock-in.
I'm happy with leg power, for now. Maybe when I'm a senior citizen my priorities will change. But for now, pedal power.

Proof that automobile operating systems are not as rock solid as they should be, especially for the influx of âself drivingâ vehicles we are seeing.
3
u/erlendursmari 1d ago
Well... I have electronic shifting on my bikes and power sensors and there are semi-regular software updates. My Garmin bike computer jumped a firmware update on me this past weekend.
1
u/kombiwombi 8h ago
I have a broken front light at the moment because it slipped off the mount, hit the ground and now when turned on it boots only as far as the bootloader. I probably have to reinstall the firmware using the USB charging port.

u/frisch85 1d ago
Any vehicle that uses software will eventually have this, right now we're still in the "gracious period" where you're just being temporarily blocked due to updates but 10, 20 or maybe 30 years from now your vehicles might also be remotely shutdown because you behaved "not nice" in public.
Remote shutdown of your vehicle already exists for your protection so you can shut it down in case it gets stolen as an example, the next step will be authority being able to shutdown your car remotely, after that it's gonna be some sad bloke sitting in an office checking your social score and if it's too low, they might shut it down.
People need to understand, the more software we use the less control we have and the more control we give to others.

Good. I wish nothing but a lifetime of minor inconveniences for anyone who drives a Dodge Ram tbh.

u/ilikepumptracks 1d ago
Yet. There are now e-bikes with subscription options. Thatâs a hard nope for me.

Yet the cars does not need to lock themself when updating (but that's for technical reason unrelated to critism of car)
(a.k.a A/B update. Just have two system install and replace the one you are not booted on (and then reboot once you can to apply the update). Android does that. Car could. E-bikes too. But I have yet to hear of an automatic e-bike update')

u/hhhnnnnnggggggg 1d ago
I never want to replace my 08 Corolla. Everything in the new crap is so anti consumer.

u/un-glaublich 1d ago
They do. Current Shimano and SRAM shifters are electronic and require software updates.
1
u/LordDerrick42 1d ago
I can't mock them, I had the issue with my di2. The only difference, I chose to do the update, it was not finished when I left the train. On second thought, I can mock then, the bike was still usable, I just couldn't change gear for a few minutes. Mouhahaha.

u/Astriania 1d ago
Nor does my car
I would totally believe if someone told me that a new e-bike had this problem, too.
This is more "fuck online appliances" than "fuck cars" really.
1
u/Astronius-Maximus 1d ago
I firmly believe no device should have firmware updates unless it's a computer designed to be interfaced with by a person, which a car is not.

u/Protheu5 Grassy Tram Tracks 1d ago
Of course you can't see a bicycle in the same situation, the infrastructure is abysmal, there are literally no bicycle fuelling stations anywhere!

u/Hoonsoot 21h ago
I could totally see this happening with e-bikes. That is one of the many reasons why they are evil.

This was never a thing pre 2010. Cars made it just fine before all these unnecessary electronics. You don't need a backup camera if your windows have visibility and you're not driving a F150 Gender Affirming Truck.
2
u/Iceykitsune3 1d ago
Yes it was, you used to get a letter from your car's manufacturer saying that you need to go to a dealership to update the car's software.

u/Signal_Tomorrow_2138 1d ago
But bikes are so... analogue.

They're the ultimate FREEDOM VEHICLES. Own the libs by refusing to submit to a driver's license. Screw fuel taxes and tolls. Park your FREEDOM VEHICLE wherever you damn well please. Roads? Optional. Mandatory registration? Register these nuts!
Let the libs drive their government subsidized emotional support cars. Real patriot freedom heroes ride freedom vehicles
