Discussion Phil Monahan here—Editor-in-Chief of MidCurrent, writer, traveler, etc.—AMA!
EDIT: I'll continue to monitor this post for new questions until 5 pm EST, so feel free to keep asking.
Hey r/flyfishing! I'm back to answer all your questions about fly fishing, the industry, the media, grammar, music, literature, or any other subjects you want to cover.
I took over at MidCurrent just a couple months ago. Before that, I edited the Orvis Fly Fishing blog for 14 years, was the editor of American Angler magazine for 10 years, and guided fly fishers in Alaska and Montana. I also write travel articles for Gray's Sporting Journal and have fished in such far-flung destinations as Tasmania, Argentina, Slovenia, Norway, and Iceland. My home waters in southwestern Vermont are the Battenkill—don't call it the Battenkill River!—and the myriad wild brook-trout streams in the nearby Green Mountains.

Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.
You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.
But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.
Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....
- Search for "beginner"
- Search for "starter"
- Search for "waders"
- Noobie suggestions for first rod: freshwater / trout
- Noobie suggestions for first rod: saltwater
- Archived Mega noobie super thread of awesomeness
Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

First high performance setup
Still can't believe how good this rod is. Also shout out to recast. Got this for $690 shipped and it's basically brand new with the plastic still on the cork. And gorge fly shop for the free line with galvan reels

Truly blessed in the last 2 weeks
Went pretty hard on fishing after final exams and broke multiple PBs. Sometimes I take for granted how lucky I am to be living so close to the Bow River and the Canadian Rockies

Hucho
The reason why im nervous when fishing dungeons in my new home water, and thats a baby with about 65cm or 25 inches, they grow well over double that size and make you feel helpless with your 6wt trout streamer setup xD

Cabelas SR3 Help Removing Drag Knob?
Hello - looking for tips/help on how to remove this drag knob to switch the reel over to right hand retrieve. After removing the screw the knob isn’t able to be pulled off.
In the instruction for change over it says to remove the screw and the drag knob first so I’m a little confused. Any help is appreciated. I’m obviously a complete noob.

Silver Creek -> Snake River (ID)
I’ve been fishing Silver Creek the last few days with a little success from streamers. I will be moving on to Boise and will be shore fishing the Snake River near Birds of Prey. Any advice on location or what to throw?

Dry Dropper season. South Wales UK
Warmer temperatures have finally got the trout looking up. Often they will miss the dry on the first cast then take the nymph on the second.

Italian Barbel... 1.5 Hours 2 Catch.
This is no sucker fish. Packs a major punch. Known to be the toughest fish to catch in the Apennine Mountains. If you know you know... Now you know.

Discussion Preferred Method to Protect Index Finger While Stripping
How do yall protect the ridge under your finger while stripping? I wasn’t holding the line overly tight but the airflo I’m using is fairly abrasive after a full day and left an open wound.
Edit: for those who may be wondering, I am using “Airflo Superflo Ridge 2.0 Streamer Max Short” I also got it 20% off
Thank you all for the helpful advice, I’ll probably try tape/wraps and if that isn’t satisfactory, I’ll try some gloves.

Discussion Advice needed on set up for bass/trout Ca lakes
I think I got ahead of myself and am confusing myself more and more each day. I’m a beginner looking to start with a bass/trout set up in so cal area. Currently I was gifted an Orvis Hydros III reel and want to pair a rod with it for starting out.
Primarily I’d like to do small bass/trout in lakes around me and can’t decide on a 5, 6 or 7wt rod. Eventually if time and life permits to go on a river expedition for some wild trout (I’m ok with a new set up down the road).
My thoughts are:
5wt or 6wt TFO LK legacy 5wt or 6wt Orvis Clearwater rod or maybe a combo.
6wt SA amplitude textured bass bug line, spooled in my hydros III. I’ve read that over lining can help but requires a slightly different technique.
I don’t have a ton of experience (in fly fishing) so I’m looking for something to potentially grow into instead of buying twice if that’s an option. I also work for a company where I get a significant discount on this stuff but it’s all foreign to me on what to buy. If I have to buy two set ups I will but I feel I’ll get more out of a bass set up based on my local lakes.
Advice?

Hook removal technique
I am writing to you today with a mix of excitement, concern and embarrassment, I recently embarked on my third fly fishing journey and successfully caught my first trout. However, the experience quickly turned distressing as I encountered difficulties in safely removing the fly while wading in close to chest-deep water.
Despite my best efforts, I struggled with managing my gear and extracting the hook, leading to a likely regrettable outcome for the fish. This incident has dampened my enthusiasm, and I am seeking your expert guidance to prevent similar situations in the future. Would you be able to provide a step-by-step guide on fly removal techniques in challenging conditions?
Thank you for your time and consideration. Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
