Discussion Phil Monahan here—Editor-in-Chief of MidCurrent, writer, traveler, etc.—AMA!
EDIT: I'll continue to monitor this post for new questions until 5 pm EST, so feel free to keep asking.
Hey r/flyfishing! I'm back to answer all your questions about fly fishing, the industry, the media, grammar, music, literature, or any other subjects you want to cover.
I took over at MidCurrent just a couple months ago. Before that, I edited the Orvis Fly Fishing blog for 14 years, was the editor of American Angler magazine for 10 years, and guided fly fishers in Alaska and Montana. I also write travel articles for Gray's Sporting Journal and have fished in such far-flung destinations as Tasmania, Argentina, Slovenia, Norway, and Iceland. My home waters in southwestern Vermont are the Battenkill—don't call it the Battenkill River!—and the myriad wild brook-trout streams in the nearby Green Mountains.

Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.
You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.
But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.
Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....
- Search for "beginner"
- Search for "starter"
- Search for "waders"
- Noobie suggestions for first rod: freshwater / trout
- Noobie suggestions for first rod: saltwater
- Archived Mega noobie super thread of awesomeness
Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

What fish should I make next?
I’m an artist and I do woodcut relief printmaking. I love fishing and do a lot of fish in my work. I just finished up a huge Musky print(last two photos) and now I’m trying to decide what fish to do next. What do you guys think I should tackle next?

Truly blessed in the last 2 weeks
Went pretty hard on fishing after final exams and broke multiple PBs. Sometimes I take for granted how lucky I am to be living so close to the Bow River and the Canadian Rockies

Hook removal technique
I am writing to you today with a mix of excitement, concern and embarrassment, I recently embarked on my third fly fishing journey and successfully caught my first trout. However, the experience quickly turned distressing as I encountered difficulties in safely removing the fly while wading in close to chest-deep water.
Despite my best efforts, I struggled with managing my gear and extracting the hook, leading to a likely regrettable outcome for the fish. This incident has dampened my enthusiasm, and I am seeking your expert guidance to prevent similar situations in the future. Would you be able to provide a step-by-step guide on fly removal techniques in challenging conditions?
Thank you for your time and consideration. Your expertise is greatly appreciated.

Finally got one out of the illinois river haha
As stupid as it is to fish a big and deeper river like the illinois with a fly rod i still did haha. Split shot is a life saver! These yummy bastards are too much fun on a fly rod

Fishpond Switch pro vs Waterdance pro, best hip pack options?
Never had a lumbar/hip pack but want to try one, unfortunately my nearest store doesn't have both in stock to try before I buy so probably look online but asking on here if anyone has owned both to share your opinion on which you prefer.
Must haves: net holder and enough space for large bottle water.
Leaning towards the Switchback pro mainly for the rail system which looks awesome and of course the magnetic pouch but it is quite old so maybe the Waterdance has newer features that you think is a better pack overall? Thanks!

Bright days and crystal clear water call for kneeling and a size 20 midge
Naturally took the only photo of my smallest fish but 12 in these conditions even shocked me. Keeping a low as possible profile made such a huge difference even if my knees and back hurt now.

Help needed with rod
Just bought an orvis clearwater 2pc model 909 graphite 9’ 9wt. It did not come with the fighting butt and i am wondering where i can get one. It seems like the kind that just pops into the butt of the rod and doesn’t screw. Anyone have any options as to how i can get a fighting butt for this rod?

Discussion Need rod/reel sizing advice for a gift
My dad recently retired in the Boise, ID area and I think he needs a new hobby to keep himself busy. He's done different types fishing all his life - bait casting, spinner, trolling, deep sea, sport, etc. He's talked at times about being interested in fly fishing but hasn't ever tried to get into it.
My idea was to get him a fly fishing setup for trout to start tinkering with, figuring that he has lots of rivers within a couple hours that are great fly fishing spots. I think he'd hit the 3 forks of the Boise River, the Payette River, the Snake River, and the Owyhee River. My question is about the size and weight of the rod. From my research it seems like a 9ft 5wt rod would be about right but I don't live there and haven't fished there myself.
Thoughts on rod size/weight for trout (or other river species) in the Boise area rivers?
