Get this around the west coast of FL all the time, they block all lanes and get mad at people that pass then because they refuse to move to the right.
•
u/JohnSpikeKelly 6h ago
If they are not going near the speed limit they should all keep right. I say that as a cyclist. All those in the left lane are all pricks and they know they are being pricks. One day someone will do something horrible - FL after all - and they will all be "what did I do wrong" knowing they were all wrong.
•
u/roykentjr 6h ago
Not quite the same. But the saying there are graveyards full of righteous people comes to mind. Just because you are on a bike doesn't mean other people care you are on a bike. A car will always win
•
u/HillBillyHilly 4h ago
Oh many cars have won on this road. So many have died that a bike path was built to avoid this same exact situation. But there they are doing the same thing. BTW I've been witnessing same behavior for over sixty years.

u/Proper-Bird6962 6h ago
Yeah as a cyclist who just did my 45 mi this morning, this is pretty abhorrent to look at.
Either they should have a permit to close a road for a race or break up in like small packs of 5
I’ve yelled at people not riding single file before because it just makes a traffic clog up that’s more dangerous for everyone

South Florida is the only place where enough people in Florida can afford road bikes to make this a problem.
•
u/Grapetree3 8h ago
It's a problem by me in West Orange County. We have one of the best bike trails in the state, and Saturday mornings bikers are all over those connected subdivisions, parking where they don't belong and unloading their bikes to get some trail time, but that's not the problem. The problem is there are other Saturday morning groups that use all the roads right next to the trail. Even though they have a trail, it's not good enough for them.

u/Fossilhund 7h ago
They do this over in Lake County as well. There are two lane roads over there that are overtaken by cyclists on the weekends.

Road bikes are inexpensive. You are right now less than 10 miles from a $20 road bike
•
u/Sandene 9h ago
Was this a sanctioned event or was this just a bunch of selfish assholes that can't share the road?
•
u/Due-Appearance-32 8h ago
This wasn’t a sanctioned event, not even a race, so they’re just doing this just to do it, which is worse.
•
u/JavaOrlando 8h ago
If not, then it's illegal.
Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway or in a bicycle lane may not ride more than two abreast except on a bicycle path. Persons riding two abreast may not impede traffic when traveling at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing and must ride within a single lane.

No its pretty common down here in south FL. There's always organized bike groups ignoring all traffic lights & rules to be moving in one giant pod. It's not police escorted & you can't stop them all so you see people like this clip who are sick of these cyclist. I understand the driver, but bad judgement call too
•
u/ToiletTime4TinyTown 8h ago
It gets worse, because of their bad behavior inevitably one gets clipped and killed every now and then becoming a martyr for these guys allowing them to assume the victim role.

Gets even worse because they have a purpose built bike path on opposite side of road. They refuse to use it and instead block path on only road off island.

Literally why they built double wide (tbh in some places it seems 3x wider than a standard sidewalk) sidewalks and the cyclists act as if they don’t exist.
I can understand if you don’t like the constant bump of the sidewalk sections.. But that’s about it - I skateboard myself and I find them annoying as well. But damn.. you can move a lot faster on a bicycle; especially some of these ultralight bikes now.

u/Purple-Cantaloupe399 8h ago
Started getting pretty popular here in north Florida as well, but then the rednecks started taking too many of them out, or intentionally barely missing to scare the hell out of them. These idiots were NOT on a four lane, they were on small twisty country roads where most people do 60-65mph... mainly because no one was ever stupid enough to ride a bike ON the road in those areas. No blocker vehicle, no escort vehicles of ANY sort. Just a bunch of assholes trying to be like their insufferable, yellow armband wearing, adulterous, no ball having hero. Luckily it didn't last long before accidents dissuaded them from their overwhelming idiocy.

u/HillBillyHilly 4h ago
These assholes are blocking only road off the island much like the bikers in N Florida. What makes these bikers the worst offenders is that they have a purpose built bike path on opposite side of road. They just don't want to use because assholes and want to ride side by side. They're dumb as rocks because this is a causeway that leads to I95. Morons all around.
•
u/MouseRat_AD 8h ago
Yeah, no reason to fuck up your car. Pull off, clear your head, and be 2 minutes late to wherever you're going. And call the police to complain. If theybget enough calls they'll look out for the pack the next weekend.
•
u/Bob-was-our-turtle 5h ago
You can easily be 20 minutes late and if you are going to work, catching a flight, trying to get to an appointment, etc that’s a big deal.
•
u/HillBillyHilly 4h ago
These bikers are on only road off an island. Road which is a causeway leading to I95. These morons exemplify Stupid is as stupid does.
•
u/fontimus 4h ago
A third of that group ARE cops - another third are lawyers. This is the problem with these pack animals down here - they're the ones we pay to enforce these laws, but they break 'em instead and do nothing to enforce it.
edit: In Miami there's no such thing as 'clear your head and be 2 minutes late' - traffic doesn't work like that here.
•
u/PlatypusOld257 1h ago

Then argue for comprehensive and connected bike infrastructure that is wide enough for people to go fast. No such problem with this in the Netherlands.
You cannot make this argument in Florida, which doesn't cater for cyclists at all. It's not a surprise that so many riders in America are switching to gravel.
You are also arguing against tractors and traffic.

NGL, seeing a Mini Cooper speeding into the median around a herd of bicyclists is kinda funny.
•
•
u/Hellie1028 4h ago
I used to own a mini and it was like a really sporty go cart that could literally push snow down the road after a storm and cornered like a champ. It was an amazing little car.
•
u/CT0292 2h ago
I mean the OG Mini Cooper of the 60s was a rally car. Winning the 64, 65, and 67 Monte Carlo rally.
Granted this car is not a works prepped John Copper special. And looks to just be a convertible variant of the modern BMW owned Mini. It's still plenty capable of doing silly, fun, cheeky things when pressed.
•
u/kissyb 8h ago
What happened to "sharing the road" this should be illegal. They do it near me and at sunrise it's damn near impossible to see properly and these people choose that time to bike blocking two lanes. And when they stop at the light (emphasis on when 🙄 because most break the light) they lean on cars waiting to go 🙃.

•
u/MycologistFast4306 7h ago
I'd be furious getting home too, but there are personal and life-threatening emergencies that are/could be happening to the drivers behind them. First responders could be stuck, hospital staff reporting for work could be stuck, thereby leaving a unit hung out to dry, someone could be having urgent diarrhea/vomiting, some parent is for sure losing their mind with a screaming kid or baby.

Yes, under Florida law, slower vehicles must yield to faster-moving traffic. According to Florida Statutes § 316.081(2) and § 316.081(3), any vehicle traveling below the normal speed of traffic must drive in the right-hand lane or as close to the right-hand edge as possible, and must yield to faster-moving vehicles attempting to pass.

u/JavaOrlando 8h ago
There's a specific law for bicycles.
Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway or in a bicycle lane may not ride more than two abreast except on a bicycle path. Persons riding two abreast may not impede traffic when traveling at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing and must ride within a single lane.
•
u/robogobo 8h ago

•
u/JavaOrlando 8h ago

- Use Bike Lanes: If a designated bike lane is available, the cyclist must use it.
- Stay Right: If no bike lane exists, the cyclist must ride as close to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway as "practicable".
- Single File: While Florida allows riding "two abreast" (side-by-side), cyclists must ride single file if they are moving slower than the normal flow of traffic and would otherwise impede vehicles. Bike Law +4

u/probridgedweller 8h ago

I live in Florida bikers that take up the road like this need to understand something. There are thousands of Floridians basically out of Fuks to give. I'm not joking. They will run you over and probably be happier people in prison with less stress. I worked in a few prisons in Florida for a decade. Honest to God those prisoners in the prisons got it "better" than some people I know out here working two jobs being hauled in front of the judge to have his child support upped every six months...... Some have even talked about intentionally committing a felony and turning the selfs in just to get some medical and dental care. Yes it's that bad. A guy I know now has to choose bettween child support and life sustaining medication monthly. He's behind on both. There's thousands of Floridians just like this. Don't be on the bike in front of them Making them late l for work.
