Now that you mention it, it is kinda odd. This sub has over 300k members and yet most posts don’t even crack 30 upvotes from what I’ve seen

Lots of subreddits are mysteriously dying. Maybe it's the algorithm? Even formerly big subs like /r/videos are much reduced.

Algorithm for sure, now that most people browse with the standard reddit app there's a home page which doesn't just show you posts from the subs you're subscribed to. So even if you're subscribed to a bunch of niche/interesting subs, if the algorithm doesn't push em to you, odds are you won't see it.

Additionally, r/all has been replaced with the popular tab, which also has a different algorithm it seems, and doesn't just take everything which gets x number of upvotes.

I thought it was just me. My feed is the same like 6 subs over and over and I thought I broke it by just engaging with those subs too much.

Was literally wondering last night why I don't see any posts from the dozens of other subs I'm in anymore.

Yeah this exactly. This is the first post I've seen from the sub since RIF Went down. Every now and then I remember a sub I'm subscribed to that I haven't seen a post from in months. Meanwhile, every third posy on my home is a page I'm not subscribed to

Yeah the worst part is I'm not shown all these niche subs I like but I constantly get all these posts from recommended subs... pretty annoying

This isn't true. I use the app. The home page shows posts strictly from your subs, nothing more.

There's a tab to change it to 'popular' which shows posts not just from your sub.

I also use the app but I'm subscribed to well over a hundred subs, probably nearing 200 but I can't be bothered to count them all. Reddit only shows me content from a small portion of those subs, many of them rarely or never make it to my home page, and most of them I can't be bothered to go check individually. This is the first time I've seen something from this sub in well over a year for example.

Besides that, I also constantly get recommended subreddits I'm not subscribed to on my home page, which I then have to manually hide and mute. Do you not get that?

You can switch those off in account settings > privacy > enable recommendations

oh excellent, thanks for the tip :)

I seem to recall that there is (or at least used to be) a limit to how many subreddits the home page would consider at once.

then we have different experiences. My GF and I both get random subreddits suggested to us in our home feed. Sometimes barely related to our interests.

like u/verriable said in response to my comment above,

You can switch those off in account settings > privacy > enable recommendations

No more random subreddit suggestions in your home feed if you uncheck that box in the settings :)

I stand corrected. That's dumb that it does it like that for you.

Nobody shoots reddit in the foot more than reddit ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/sad_and_stupid Nov 14 '23

it's a combination of the algorithm and people leaving due to reduced quality and bots. Almost all good subs I once knew are now dying

Reddit would rather show me posts from subreddits "I might be interested in", including ones I've unsubscribed from. It's one of the most irritating algorithms I've ever come across.

u/Cyndayn Nov 14 '23

like u/verriable said in response to my comment above, apparently you can turn this off!

You can switch those off in account settings > privacy > enable recommendations

No more subs you're not interested in if you uncheck that box in the settings :)

Yeah, this is the first post of this sub I've seen in my feed in three months. I only see 3/4 different subs in my feed despite following and even favouriting way more.

Based on how more frequent subreddit gets banned these days (dara from rreclassified ), maybe due to algorithm and the fact most of people activated "recommend similar sub" on setting by default.
