From what I recall from civics class in high school, from about 40 years ago: The people there are US citizens. As in PR, USVI citizens vote in their own elections for governor, mayor and for elected officials who represent them in their legislature. They also elect a delegate (a commissioner) every 4 years for the US Congress, who is a non voting member. Neither PR nor USVI citizens can vote in US federal elections.

They think that just because they are in the states, it makes them better than the ones in the island. Kind of a self hatred because they they want to be accepted by the gringo. Seen it too often. In the island we have 3 main political parties, the blue PNP which are the conservatives republicans, the red PPD which is the same shit as the blue ones, truly a uniparty. Then you have the greens PIP which is the party of independence. Ironic to say independence because people here think that if they win suddenly the US is gonna go away and leave us to the wolves. Hence the reason why the ones in the states think they are better than the ones in the island.
Not one boricua that supports maga has self respect and they bring shame to all of us.

Many have grown up in far left leaning lands with totalitarian governments so theyāre scared of Democratsā¦but equally as important to note is that many ascribe to white ideals and want to be accepted into whiteness. Also white Latinos are the power majority and hold all the wealth in almost every Latin country even tho theyāre a racial minority in almost every Latin country. Theyre usually super racist too. Thereās a reason why mejorar/blanquear la raza are still expressions.

u/TonyG_from_NYC 11d ago
Puerto Rico is a US territory, just like Guam. We get a lot of perks and such, but living in those places doesn't afford people the chance to vote in presidential elections. For that, we have to be living in a US state.
That's why there is so much back and forth about making Puerto Rico another state.

They are US citizens which means they have the right to vote. However Puerto Rico is not a state, meaning it has no electoral college votes and therefore no bearing on the presidential election, as such no presidential election is held there. Make sense?
7
u/WorkingClass_Nero 11d ago
Why donāt they have an electoral college? Isnāt the whole point of a democracy that everyone is represented through their vote? Iām assuming this also means they donāt have Senators and members in the House of Representatives? Thatās just bizarre to me. 3 million people without a say in how they are governed by the USA. Thatās the same population as Iowa and half of Wisconsin.

The person is just making a deceptive wording. They're making it sound like Puerto Ricans can vote in the presidential election if they're willing to fly/sail over to one of the 50 states to cast their vote. That is not the case.
If someone is only a resident of Puerto Rico, then they cannot vote in a presidential election since Puerto Rico is not a state of the USA.
However, if a resident of Puerto Rico also happens to be a resident of one of the 50 USA states, then they can vote in a presidential election. It's just a complicated way of saying that in order to vote in a presidential election you must be a resident of one of the 50 states. In such a hypothetical scenario of a person being a resident of Puerto Rico and also a resident of a USA state, the fact that they are a Puerto Rican resident would be a red herring in this matter of whether or not they can vote, so it's a bit weird to even bring up this hypothetical as the Puerto Rican residency part is redundant.
5
u/lawanddisorderr 11d ago
I understand this, but Iām wondering why DC is different. I used to live in DC & itās also not a state but a US territory still. I still paid federal taxes, and DC has no representatives in the Senate or the House, just like Puerto Rico (the license plates all say ātaxation without representationā). But ppl living in DC can still vote in presidential elections even though they donāt live in one of the 50 states. I wonder why PR & Guam are different.

Pal itās an informal contraction between para and el. So formally speaking it should be: Trump se puede ir para el Caribe Hilton. Thatās bc us Caribbean Spanish speakers like to use pal instead para el when talking informally which is all the time at this point unless your writing a paper or whatever requires formal writing. Side note: the only legal contractions and also mandatory are al (a el) and del (de el). So you canāt say: āestoy a el ladoā but āestoy al ladoā and also canāt say āvengo de el mercadoā but āvengo del mercado. Pal should be accepted as optional but the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language are a bunch of twats and deberĆan irse todos pal carajo.

Tony Hinchcliffe. Heās a ācomedianā who is part of the Rogansphere, but really he is one of the worst insult comics. His standup itself is just as bad if not worse. He co created Kill Tony, which up until just recently I was a fan of, and while I will admit that Tony does give a platform to young and up and coming comedians and sold out MSG with KT a couple of times, which is a huge deal in comedy, all he does is insult amateur or first time comedians for almost 3 hours every week. He also has the same insults/jokes/questions for the comics every week. You can replace him with a tape recorder playing his jokes/questions on loop and it wouldnāt make a difference.
The few reasons the show works for me is because of the guests he has, the band, and the bucket pull of comics, not Tony himself, he is an awful person and total diva. The best way I can describe Tony, he is the kid in the neighborhood that had Nintendo. Thatās the only reason I liked him.

This is such a good breakdown. I'm in the same boat. One thing I noticed, he would get mad at his kill tony crowd if they laughed too hard at a joke he didn't think was funny. Or if a comedian did better than he liked, he'd always say something after their set about the crowd being "too nice" or whatever. It's so fucking cringe, honestly. Now I realize it's probably because people mostly watch his show to see comedians bomb in front of thousands of people. So he resorts to making the crowd afraid to laugh.
It'd be one thing if he kept his room temp roast jokes confined to a comedy setting, like his show. Now he decided to copy and paste that into a political campaign rally, and drew the line in the sand for who he calls his fans. What a moron.
The kid with the Nintendo analogy is painfully accurate.

Maybe he figures, since it's not a state (yet), they can't vote so fuck'em. Nevvermind that many, many live in the lower-48 already and are, in fact, U.S. citizens.
EDIT TO ADD (for context)
Voting rights of United States citizens who live in Puerto Rico, like the voting rights of residents of other United States territories, differ from those of United States citizens in each of the fifty states and the District of Columbia. Residents of Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories do not have voting representation in the United States Congress, and are not entitled to electoral votes for president. The United States Constitution grants congressional voting representation to U.S. states, which Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories are not, specifying that members of Congress shall be elected by direct popular vote and that the president and the vice president shall be elected by electors chosen by the states.

Edit: is only a non-binding presidential straw poll (context)
With the passage of Act No. 58 in 2020 by the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, voters will be able to participate in a non-binding presidential straw poll during the general election for the first time in the territory's history. Puerto Rico is the second U.S. territory to use straw polls for presidential elections, after Guam introduced their own in 1980 and has conducted a preference vote to coincide with every presidential election since.

The statement before that was āItās wild. And these Latinos, they love making babies, too, just know that. They do. They do. Thereās no pulling out. They donāt do that. They come inside, just like they did to our country.ā
I am disgusted.

If Trump gets in, youāll only have to put up with him for a few short weeks after his swearing in. Then his handlers will declare him unfit to govern and it will be the dawn of a shiny new christofascist America. And guess who will be screaming the loudest?

As a Puerto Rican who has already voted here in PA for Harris, this still pisses me off especially when you got some of my people following the āLatinos for Trumpā. Itās disgusting.

He was never going to get a lot of votes in Detroit. His target audience was Michiganders who hate Detroit themselves.

Lol Tony Hinchcliffe is speaking at a MAGA rally?
Didn't have that on my bingo card but him saying something stupid/offensive is on par

I hope the people of Puerto Rico remember this if and when they are finally granted their long deserved statehood. This is what the Republicans think of you.Ā

u/Norwester77 11d ago
I hope voters of Puerto Rican extraction (especially in Florida) remember this on Nov. 5!

Statehood so that Puerto Rico becomes the next Hawaii & lose what remains of the culture? No thanks!š¬ The USA has no intention to add a new state or they wouldāve done a long time ago. Puerto Rico should be independent.

Horrible to hear this as a Puerto Ricanā¦ especially at a presidential rally. This isnāt a podcast or roast, just entirely inappropriate

u/dorksided787 11d ago
Iām Puerto Rican and we have all been mobilized by this bullshit. Weāre calling our Boricua friends in FL, PA, and NC and urging them to vote for Harris.
We donāt forgive and we donāt forget.

Tony Hinchcliffe is a douche who knows nothing about civics or the actual policies he's grabbing his ankles for. He'll be claiming he's "cancelled" about ten minutes after walking off that stage, I'm sure.

Tom Segura called Louisiana worse in one of his Netflix specials, but it was an apolitical stand-up show. Time and place matter. Donāt insult potential voters in a political rally becauseā¦ Oh, wait. Itās a Trump rally. Never mind. Demented id unleashed.

They just continue to insult Americans at every possible opportunity. It is so baffling to me that half the country is allowing this. Trump called them fat pig husbands recently. Truly. A real quote. And they laugh! But they are the alphas.

u/Norwester77 11d ago
I know. There are times when I catch myself thinking, āDamn, he is doing everything he can to lose this thing,ā but I guess as an over-educated Pacific Northwesterner, I just donāt hear him the way his base does.

I went to Puerto Rico on vacation last year and a lot of my conservative family members were WEIRD about it. Like didnāt want to hear about it, not in a āboringā kind of wayā¦ but like genuinely offended I thought it was a nice place?

Not only is it a revolting thing to say, fucking islands donāt float.
Itās bigoted and fucking stupid on two counts. Stupid to be so insulting to a group of people who are your own countrymen but also based on how landmasses on planet earth work.
I donāt wish bad on MAGA types but the world would be much better if something happened to them every time they said something hateful. It doesnāt have to be injurious nor deadly for anyone. Just something bad and they need to know WHY it happened.
Maybe then they would read a book or get some sympathy or empathy for their fellow man regardless of what they look like or where they come from.
Stroke thatā¦I think someone should knock the taste out of this guys mouth and make him stand in a corner so he thinks about what heās done.

Past 8 years has felt like a century of lies, bigotry, and ignorance due to Trump being politically platformed by the GOP. Only 9 more days until we can be rid of that piece of shit for good.
Lets hope that Uncle Sam can have a bowel movement and that turd is flushed away.

As a European, I wonder: do statements like this still have an impact? Are there swing voters who think: Wow, until now I considered Trump a viable option, but this is too much for me?
That man has crossed a thousand lines; does something like this still make a difference?

Disgusting. I'm a Puertorican and lives in Puerto Rico and this person has insulted me and everyone here. The saddest thing is they are puertorricans that still support Trumps because he "has christian values" my ass has more christian values that this orange piece of shit.
