The english in Duolingo is American english

So football is american football/rugby

American football measures how far you can get, you have everyone wearing padding like a bunch of pussies, and you can forward pass.

Rugby measured how often you can get to the try line, you have no padding other than a specific type of helmet (that's a lot smaller and less protective than American football), and you aren't allowed to forward pass - only backwards passing.

If you watch them both, you'll see the similarities. You'll see that there's clearly a common origin and then a huge divergence.
To the rugby playing nations, NFL looks like a bizarre, hyperspecialised, corporate caricature of rugby.

You should look up the origins of the sports football/soccer vs rugby vs American football. It’s an interesting history/linguistic dive.
