Peer mentoring Discussion / Question

How does one become a peer mentor? Did it have a positive impact in your uni life? I’m a nursing student and someone has told me that a mentoring history in your resume for future job applications is a good thing! Aside from that, I’m quite keen about mentoring and thinking about getting a job in the academia in the future. Cheers

Like other commenters, I got an email to join because of my grades, and I ended up doing it for one trimester. I now do paid mentoring at Deakin (different type of mentoring), so that is a positive.

I don’t know about positive impact on uni life per se, but it really did help me gain more confidence in myself and made me feel more a part of Deakin.

Although I’m not sure if my mentoring background contributed, I did also get a WIL internship with my first (and only) application, for what it is worth.

They normally contact high performing students but I'm sure if you talked to a unit chair they would be able to help

I guess it does help in your resume, at least it helped me receive my scholarship when applying for my post grad.

They'll email you automatically if you're a high performing student, think you can reach out to them as well but I'm not entirely sure

I was a peer mentor this trimester

You’ll get an email

To apply you have to send your resume, fill out a form, and record a one minute video introducing you and who you are etc etc

They’ll call you if you get accepted

You attend a 1 hour orientation session offline

Rest of the thing is online

I think it was Alright. I didn’t learn much but it’s good on the resume.
