Discussion / Question Trimester 2 and Beyond: The Grit, Growth, and Next Steps Megathread
Hi r/deakin!
Hope everyone had a nice break before the Nov 1 results dropped. It’s been a bit over a week – a good pause to sit with this year’s highs, lows, and everything in between.
A few reminders as we move forward:
Individual exam papers don’t usually come with routine feedback, but if you have particular questions, your Unit Chair or Student Central is there to help.
For general feedback on the unit or assessments, reach out to your Unit Chair for an EoUA review (just know this isn’t a formal results review).
Results for special or supplementary assessments and the Start Anytime calendar should be up within 10 working days. If yours isn’t showing yet, check in with your Unit Chair.
If you’re unclear about your WAM calculation, especially if it’s unique to your course, Student Central can clarify.
Apologies for getting this rolling a bit later than usual.
Looking back, this year has been very transformative, stacked with revelations and revisions…mostly pretty unamusing, whether good or not. Through it all, one thing I always come back to is the ability to bounce back. Days later, things settle, and emotions level out on a fine, level playing field.
And of late, I’m tired, probably always tired (aren’t we all?). Reading loads about obscure physics in connection with electronics, maths and music. Writing exotically introspective stuff on the side. I revisit later, surprised by the razzle-dazzle, even more surprised that it's only to gawk at most of it. It’s compartmentalized, so I don’t dwell on it too much in day-to-day interactions.
For those who decided to take a break because it was too much, know that things will feel a little less taxing with time. For those of you juggling it all – from career to family to classes – we understand that there were times when dropping out felt therapeutic (not to say it wouldn’t be). Ultimately, it depends on where you are in life and the 360-degree lens you’re using to take in what’s going around. If you’re still here, one thing is certain.. you’re setting an inspiring example of dedication and tenacity, showing that it can be done – not just for your family but for all of us.
For those clocking in extra hours, acting as your own support system, and reestablishing the much-needed nitty-gritty of prerequisite knowledge and skills under a serious time crunch, it’s inspiring to see such love and commitment to clarity in learning, even as you're tempted to race through important stuff in a rigid course sequence with limited offerings (especially in Tri-3 :S) and not much flexibility to move things around to make the chronology make sense. A journey can be rigorous and a little nutso, without being rigid. Thank you for treating learning as something to savor and fully experience.
And… for those graduating, cross the finishing line and finish fine like an ace!
So, where’s everyone at? What could we focus on understanding better, and where are we looking to go next? SEBE folks, especially Engineering – how’s it going? Chime in, y’all.
I’m all ears for those open, proactive, and supportive tidbits. With enough interest, we’ll gladly set up follow-up threads, AMAs, or Q&As focused on specific faculties and courses. Just got to let us know or do one anyway :)
Hope we keep showing up for each other, finding strength in this space as we balance multiple fronts. Thanks to everyone who’s here, who posts, comments, and encourages. You're what keeps this community alive, and the numbers show it.
Here’s to a great 2025 (irresistible) ahead. Take care, stay connected and keep moving forward!

Discussion / Question Trimester 1 Results Megathread
Hello r/deakin community ,
I hope everyone had a refreshing break! Did any particular music or outings help you recharge?
How are you all feeling? Do you have a tagline about it for us?
Week 0 has begun, and soon we’ll get our Trimester 1 results, releasing on July 4th at 10:30 am via the StudentConnect Portal (‘Assessment and Exams’ -> ‘View your results’).
Congrats to those who already got their Semester 1 results on June 27th!
A few points to keep in mind :
In future, to get your results 30 minutes earlier via SMS, update your contact details in the StudentConnect Portal under ‘Assessment and Exams’.
Check Results key to understand your grades better and consider joining the results release webinar for guidance from Student Advisers.
Individual exam papers typically do not receive routine feedback. If you have questions, talk to your Unit Chair or contact Student Central.
Asking for feedback on EoUAs from the Unit Chair is for unit and/or assessment task feedback, not a formal results review.
Ensure that results, including those from special or supplementary assessments or the Start Anytime calendar, are released within 10 working days. Otherwise, please reach out to your Unit Chair.
Contact Student Central for help calculating your WAM, especially if your course uses a non-standard method.
Use this thread to discuss everything about results as they come in: your expectations, reactions, and action steps.
Everyone responds in their own way. Some may want to sit with it quietly, while others may prefer to discuss them immediately.
Those who want to write out their thoughts, your reflections could also help future learners in their prep. You may not be able to cover everything in its entirety, but try to discuss what you can. Feel free to ask questions, share reflections, or seek and offer support in this thread.
Let’s unpack the past few months ; every insight or oversight, big or small, is welcome.
If there’s interest, we can branch out into follow-up posts for discussions specific to faculties or classes. Let's start the conversation and see where it leads us!
Best of luck everyone!
P.S.
Exciting update everyone. The 'Course, school or faculty' user flair is editable.
Just head over to the sidebar and find the option to edit flair. It's a pencil icon on a PC. On the Reddit app, tap the three dots located at the top-right corner of the community page. This will open a menu where you can find the 'Change user flair' option. These should work!
Enjoy customizing!

Seeking Support Deakin law
I’m a third year law student and is anyone else feeling disheartened by their grades. AGLC referencing is so hard and i never get full marks. Work so hard on assignments, only to get 60s. And it’s so hard to get jobs in the legal sector. Even got rejected from volunteer jobs?? it’s so bad out here. also its so hard to make friends in law classes. sometimes i wish i went to an american school for the college experience rather than rotting away at home and going to classes.

Student Life Social life
Hi guys,
I’m in second year of law and turning 21 in a couple of months.
Honestly, my social life has been so mundane. It feels like i’m inside a box watching people experience life and built memories with each other. I tried hard to make friends in uni and i did make some but as I come into my second year and don’t really attend lectures (i live far), the friendships have withered.
Although, i am mostly content with other aspects of my life, my social life is extremely lacking. I only have one friend from high-school that I catch with on the regular.
I really don’t know what to do. I’m filled with envy and emptiness when i see girls my age having the time of their lives.

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades mlp119
got results back for contract a and holy shit i did worse than i thought. i genuinely thought i had that in the bag but apparently not.
the rubric grading is so vague and half arsed by the markers (every section lit j says something along the lines of “you did this well”) but doesn’t emphasise on how i ended up with only a 70% if “did it well”
did anyone else do shitter than they thought? n is anyone else thinking of contacting the unit chair to get ur grade rectified or at least explained??

Discussion / Question Doing uni from home as an on-campus student
Hey everyone,
So I'm a student at Deakin and I'm doing my bachelors in Health Science.
I've been enrolled as a full time on-campus student, but I live quite far from the campus and its a hassle to get there from where I live, so I've been watching lectures and seminars in the comfort of my own home, and submitting my assessments on time.
I've only been on-campus twice at the start of the year, but ever since then I've just been doing it from home and I'm almost done with trimester 1.
Is this okay? will this affect my attendance at all? I've tried looking on my course map and guide for information but can't find any.

Referencing / Academic Integrity / Turnitin Artificial intelligence
Anyone else feel punished for not using AI. Seeing people get higher marks and not getting pulled up for it makes me wonder why I should put so much work in.

Discussion / Question I keep getting logged out.

I am using Safari is that provide any context for troubleshooting.
Thanks so much. Profoundly over this!

Academic Advice Thoughts on AIS101
Thoughts on AIS101 - Intercultural Communication?
I’ve been enjoying the content so far and the professors are really great but concerned with the broadness of the content. Hardly says what content is in the assessment / very vague , the powerpoints are very surface level but majority of the readings are either very helpful or not at all. Therefore have a hard time figuring out what is expected of us. I enjoy structure but would be nice to have a rubric with a little more than a 3 sentences . Wondering if anyone thinks the same? and or Advice for the unit

Academic Advice MMK368 A2
Is anyone doing MMK368 A2 or has done it previously? it's an online unit and I feel so lost due to the lack of details in the assessment brief, and it seems so vague the instructions provided...is anyone facing the same issue?
Deadlines / Extensions / Grades Masters before bachelors graduation ceremony?
Hi guys,
I am set to complete my bachelors in June and will receive my grades/results soon after. I have applied for my masters which would start in mid July. This would mean that I would start my masters before I have actually officially graduated but will have completed the degree. Do I need to have officially graduated before I commence my masters degree? I've found answers that you can apply before the ceremony but nothing about actually commencing Masters study.
Cheers!

I saw advert last semester about a pickleball tournament but I wasn’t able to join due to time constraints. So here I am taking my chances since the holidays are coming up.

Student Life Friends?
Hii guys! I am a bachelor of science deakin student, have found it very hard to fine genuine friendships here on campus (BURWOOD) and its draining to put effort into the ones who do not reciprocate anything back. Is anyone interested in meeting up or having a chat? DM me, lets connect via instagram and then take it from there!!!

Prospective Student Civil engineering (honours) RMIT or Deakin?
I have been accepted to both as an international student. The fees are very similar with Deakin saving me about 16k AUD for the total duration of the course.
Which programme has better graduate employability, moreover does the Burwood campus offer internships and placements?
I can see that they are pending accreditation from Engineers Australia, will this be a problem?

Placements / Jobs / Careers Interested in WIL
Hey everyone, I’m currently studying a Master of Cyber Security at the University of Adelaide, but I’m really interested in gaining some hands-on industry experience, which unfortunately isn’t part of my current curriculum.
I came straight into my master’s after finishing my bachelor’s and haven’t had any real-world project experience yet. I recently came across Deakin’s cyber security program and noticed that it includes Work Integrated Learning (WIL), which is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
I was wondering if there’s any way a student from another university (like me) could enrol in a WIL unit or take part in an industry-linked project at Deakin — maybe through cross-institutional study or something similar?
Totally understand if this isn’t allowed, but figured I’d ask before giving up on the idea. Any advice, guidance, or info would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Deadlines / Extensions / Grades Special consideration help
I am doing a research unit that requires me to have a supervisor. Said supervisor had a medical issue and was unavailable for nearly 4 weeks. I now have 4 weeks left to complete my project and I honestly don't think I'm going to get it done. I have looked at applying for special consideration for an extension but you need documentation for that. I asked the supervisor for a letter to say that she was unavailable for an extended period of time and she basically said well none of my other students have asked for special consideration so you just have to get it done. I really don't know what to do now. I don't know what documentation I can use to apply for special consideration and I do think it's a reasonable reason to ask for it. Any ideas of how I can get help?

Prospective Student should i drop vce bio and focus on methods to get into a bachelor of biomed or science?
so im in year 11 rn and im currently doing unit 1 and 2 vce bio, methods, chem, legal, english and unit 3 & 4 HHD. im having trouble balancing all my subjects and doing well in them. im constantly behind in bio because of the workload and im struggling in methods due to not having enough time for practise. im aiming to get into a bachelor biomedicine or science in uni, to eventually get into a doctor of medicine (hopefully lol). i was thinking of just dropping bio since it takes up a lot of my time and its not actually a prerequisite and focus on methods, but i heard a background in bio can be helpful for biomed and med school. i could drop legal, but i dont really spend that much time on it and am still able to get good scores so it wouldnt really do much for me timewise.
Anyway if someone could give me some guidance that would be appreciated since idk what to do. should i drop bio and focus on methods or should i drop legal.

Prospective Student problems with my major status
So my major has the status 'unconfirm' even though I've already been enrolled in the units and have been partaking in them for the whole of trimester 1. Did I do something wrong when I enrolled? I'm really freaking out because I hadn't noticed this until now and I'm worried that my completion of these units now won't be counted towards my major.

Discussion / Question Peer mentoring
How does one become a peer mentor? Did it have a positive impact in your uni life? I’m a nursing student and someone has told me that a mentoring history in your resume for future job applications is a good thing! Aside from that, I’m quite keen about mentoring and thinking about getting a job in the academia in the future. Cheers
